[QUOTE="gamecubepad"]I think Uncharted 3 will sell the same amount of copies whether, or not, the ability exist to pirate it.

foxhound_fox

I can almost guarantee that with this new authorization key hack, the piracy rates for Uncharted 3 are going to trump piracy rates for any game in the history of gaming. Maybe not Doom level, but surely higher than anything we've seen so far this generation.

We're talking about 2 different things, though. You're talking piracy rates, I'm talking number of copies sold.

Crysis was pirated to hell and back, but it still sold over 3 million copies. Now if it was pirated by 5 million people, does that equate to 5 milllion lost sales? Hell no.

For me it's simple. If Uncharted 3 sells as much as Uncharted 2, then piracy had no effect.

[QUOTE="Mrmccormo"] But if you have pre-loaded your router settings, the PS3 will automatically connect to the internet, even if you don't automatically log in to PSN. That's the point of this article. Hackers would have to delete router information, hack, get some kind of CFW that doesn't show up to Sony, and then set back up their router settings.Kashiwaba

Why not just turn off your router?

If you don't want to play online games you can.

I know, but they said the ps3 connects to the internet automatically, just turn of the router and problem solve.

Anyway, if you have the master key that authorizes everything, how would Sony know if the hack is there? Does it send them a information on what is running?

If Sony actually does this and I read about it in a non-speculative article, I'll congratulate them.

This is clearly a scare tactics move that Sony is using against hackers.

It wasn't Sony stating any of that, it was Digital Foundry.

Unless Sony bricks every PS3 and copy of software in circulation, it ain't happening.

jalexbrown

All we have so far are a bunch of hackers words to go on. Sony hasn't said much of anything yet.. I wouldn't really count them out yet.

You're still negating the fact that it would be illegal for Sony to brick PS3s; this was already tested in court with the iPods, and it was decided that all Apple could do was disallow access to their networks.

Which would still be enough for a lot of people.

No Internet is basically a bricked PS3. Why would you want a PS3 that can't go online?

It's hardly a measure of stopping the hackers but merely a cheap tactic to instill fear in regular users to not venture in the piracy world without running the risks of getting their console banned. Seeing as the security of the PS3 is completely busted hackers can do whatever they to counter whatever Sony throw at them (even unban banned consoles). This will not fix the current problem. Sony are just out of ideas and there is nothing they can do

Sounds like the common scare tactics for pirates nowadays which are a bunch of superscary emails and polite threats. Consider me convinced when proof shows up.

ShuichiChamp24

If you never connect your PS3 they can't see anything and would have no way of knowing, but I don't think it will be hard for them to detect hackers if they ever do connect their PS3 and Sony sees they've played a game called something like Uncharted3dumpv1.2 or CODBOPSROM. I don't know what the PS3 remembers so I'm just guessing really. My personal opinion is that online is such a major component of games these days it doesn't make sense to pirate.

All this " I will believe it when I see itz " or "its BS, Sony u lyin to me " is pretty hilarious. Hearing these stupid comments are obviously showing the true lemming colors. Especially how they can't get the fact that Sony is a multi-billion dollar company. Really now? :?

Or if you only care about SP campaign. I only play SP even on COD, Halo, KZ. I try the MP a little, but it's not my thing. Except L4D and Horde mode.

MS did it in the past. Hackzors have consistently found a way around it though. Restoring the official firmware seems like the usual fix for a bricked unit. In this case, it seems harder to accomplish, since the PS3's security has been totally compromised.

Seems like Sony could keep people off PSN through constant updates, but since it's free, it could be harder to pull off for Sony than for MS.

If the console connects at boot, the firmware is probably checked.

from what i can gather it doesn't alter the firmware at all, all it is is SONY's secret masterkey, the key to the whole system so to speak.

If you understand how the system was actually breached. You would know that there really is no way Sony can counter it. Espeically since they will never be able to tell if someone has hacked their ps3 or not.

This is something that's going to have to play out before anyone can say what is and isn't possible (and that's directed toward hackers and Sony both).

really? so PS3 automatically connects to your router wirelessly even if security is on?

M$ has done it in the past.. I don't know why people are thinking thats its simply not possible.Easyle
Because people hacking 360 dont have the official MS key as they do with the PS3. Most of MS's information is kept server side (i think). With this new jailbreak, everything is given the legit stamp from the console = no need to avoid PSN or free PSN content. It would be different if it were simply getting a different homebrew which could be detected. You could get regular updates and still pirate games with this jailbreak. Its very different from the 360 or Wii hacking. This is worse. Sony cant stop this without disabling ALL keys for ALL consoles via this method = wont happen

It's just the TC that says Sony "destroys" piracy. The article on joystiq was merely pointing out that Sony can possibly ban consoles without a PSN account.

This is different. Microsoft released an update that detected changes with the hardware and would ban that specific console from playing on Xbox Live. With the Ps3 there isn't any hardware modifications at all. You use the same key that Sony uses to authorize content, there is no way for Sony to detect anything.

This is how I understood it worked, presumably any auto-report feature built into the ps3 would only report problems/modifications made, since this exploit utilises Sony's own key's the PS3 would interpret any hacked code as legit, as far as the ps3's concerned the code is perfectly legit and therefore would report nothing. maybe I'm missing something, oh well we'll wait and see.

If it does report it, then maybe the best use would be for Sony to attack uses of their own code.

Unfortunately, this won't really work. Since the new security exploit makes it possible for hackers to sign any unauthorized software with Sony's official encryption key, there will be no way to detect which console actually ran any unauthorized firmware or software (unless each of the 40 million PS3s worldwide was manually monitored), and thus, no way to identify consoles which need to be 'rendered unusable.'

yeaahhh hate to break it to some people in this thread but that's just scare tactics, bluffing, etc.

these guys have the PS3's security key in other words Sony won't be able to tell the difference as they'll appear the same as everyone else:?
