I've heard quite alot on how keyboard and mouse are much better for fps's and such

I've recently started playing more shooter games on the computer and i'm finding it more difficult tbh,i normally feel more comfortable with a controller for shooters.

anyone else like this?

I've always played on PC but yeah, if you switch from controller to m/kb then its going to feel strange. But M/KB is the most accurate and responsive. Controllers just feel better suited to gaming and certain genres like racing.

the only people who find keyboard/mouse awkward are the same ones that have only gamed on a home console.

give the keyboard/mouse more than five goddamn minutes and you'll find out they are leagues ahead of controllers.

Nope.

I transitioned from the N64 controller straight into PC gaming without a single problem. I also was able to play the original Xbox and Gamecube very easily while also doing heavy amounts of PC gaming.

However now my skill level in PC gaming has gotten to a point that I find it really hard to play console FPS games.

It'll definitely feel weird at first, even horrid, even more so if you're playing online, since most of those guys have been using KB/M since forever, but keep it up, you'll get used to it without even noticing it, and you'll see how much more precise and natural it feels vs a controller.

Actually, that's far from the truth, a ps3 controller is Much harder on the hands than m/kb (so long as it's not setup stupidly), and you never use all the buttons on a keyboard for gaming, the most I've used is probably 50 or so binds, with ctrl and shift being used to modify only 25 or so buttons total.

Depends on the game for me.

Team Fortress 2 is fine with the keyboard and mouse but playing CoD 4 on a keyboard is just painful.

They both are easy and both are comfortable. It just takes some time to get used to it, if you play solely on one of the other, I'd suppose.

Personally, I will never play a shooter on PC. I will always play the console version because of the controller. I think it's much easier to control. I find using a mouse and keyboard in shooters difficult.

Controllers feel too fiddly for me and I feel that the buttons aren't mapped out very well (i.e the movement analog stick is left of the control pad yet the jump button is on the right of the control pad for Halo and CoD.)

nurnberg

A good comfortable key config, and an accurate sensitively will go a long way. I used to have my sensitivity cranked up to about 6.8 which might be considered low for some pc gamers, but I brought it down to around 3.8 and that along made it so much easier. Of course having a bigger mouse pad helped with that :P

Pretty much the opposite for console games. I always have it set on high, or near maximum. Mgo, I have all my setting on 9s and 10s.

I wonder however, if there is a program or anything at all to have some keys setup for multiple things like gamepads. That could come in handy I think for some of the more console centric games. If there is a way, I wouldnt mind knowing what it is, that's for sure. Anyway, When it comes down to it, I find the transition between the two setups virtually painless. Just a matter of getting back into the groove after sticking with either one for a long period of time.

Don't get me wrong a controller feels excellent to me but it just doesn't top the precision and absolute quickness you get with a good mouse and keyboard combo. It's just a better tool to use for the job on a lot of games.

Kinda. I mean both Quake 4 and Unreal Tournament 3 were both built to be used by controllers, and guess what? Those games weren't as good as Quake 3 Arena, or Unreal Tournament 2k4, and now we most likely won't ever see a new Quake or Unreal Tournament...

I had a feeling his post wouldn't set well with you. I don't think I use that many keys on the keyboard when I play. Especially in a first person shooter. If you map your keys right, you won't have to worry about reaching so far for that grenage throwing key.

Played on m/kb for 14 years 'til that happened, but that was a combination of guitar for 4 hours a day and playing PS3, the kb/m didn't have anything to do with it. Trust me, keyboard as the edge of the desk, mouse pad hanging just a little over on the desk, high sensitivity, so you're not dragging your hand, but just moving your wrist maybe 30 degrees to move across the whole screen, lovely, very low stress.

And the example of using ~only 25 unique buttons was in WoW, it's no where near a normal game's control configuration. And completely depends on genre, plenty of games I won't touch an m/kb for.

KB/M tops controllers for probably 90% of the games I play. I still can't fathom how people can possibly prefer controllers to KB/M for first person shooters, especially. I mean the amazing precision you'll get with a mouse over a controller should speak for itself.

I found switching from shooters on a controller to a kb/m quite diffucult, but also rewarding. My only problem with kb/m gaming is the lack of accurate character movement, with only 8 possible directions and no ability to choose how fast your character moves (with the exception of a walk button or such). That's why I use a controller for Beat Hazard and The Witcher 2.

I read how MS did experiments with cross game multiplayer in that they had experienced players play against less experienced players and the experienced players used the controller while less experienced used the keyboard and mouse and the keyboard and mouse proved more advantageous, which is why they never implemented cross system multiplayer... however, as far as multiplayer on consoles is concerned I'm not concerned about using a controller as everyone is on equal grounds. If someone were playing on PC they can use either method they prefer, I see nothing wrong with using a gamepad in single player but in multiplayer they should be using keyboard and mouse and the rest of their team relies on their performance.

UT 3 and Quake 4 are nowhere near as noob friendly as say COD for example. How was the gameplay changed for controllers? You could still carry every weapon and movement speed was about the same.

UT2k4 was pretty much dead after 6 months, I remember having to play on a Rankin only server that allows owners of the game to play against people with the demo.

Most gamers just dont like arena shooters, plain and simple. The only reason arena shooters were ever popular is because Cod wasnt around yet.

Honestly depends on the game. Something like bioshock plays much better with a controller imo. While games like CCS play better with a mouse and keyboard, then there are games like BC2 that really could go either way. KB and Mouse really shines in RTS and RPGs imo. FPS really aren't indepth enough to take full advantage of the keyboard and mouse setup.

I prefer controllers for slower shooters like CoD and Halo. I prefer the mouse and keyboard when it comes to shooters like Quake 3, CSS and TF2.

Then it's controller all the way for every genre except isometric RPG's.

I prefer controllers. Was raised on consoles with the NES and own all the consoles back to the NES. A controller just feels more natural in my hands. That's just me though. Now, if I cannot turn the sensitivity up high and the aim assist off in my games, it really bothers me and always has. But most games don't have aim assist and the sensitivity usually goes extremely high and has for a long time.

UT2k4 was pretty much dead after 6 monthsCranler

ROFL, what the hell are you talking about?

I put over 2k hours into the game over the course of many years, throughout which the community was always extremely active in all gametypes outside like Bombing Run. Actually, I casually played VCTF for years. Even though it existed as an "unofficial" gametype and had only a small slice of the playerbase, you could find an active VCTF server at literally any time of the day.

Sure, now it's pretty dead when compared to most games, but UT2004 still has hundreds of servers running even today.

Edit: Yes, arena shooters seem to be dead for the moment, which sucks because games in the Quake and UT franchise were the pinnacle of the genre for me. UT2004 was the last "great" shooter, imo. I'm sort of just drifting from game to game trying to find something that can give me the same level of enjoyment.. not that I'm holding my breath.

Da_lil_PimP

FPS are not only genre consolites play.

You find other genres like sports, fighting, racing, platform, action adventure are preferred and superior on a control pad erogonmicall and functionally with button placements. Also force feedback and wihout the need to rest them on a table..........so I wouldn't feel so bad for consolites.

Are you also comparing an console FPS game to PC FPS game or it's use of controls?

Anything that requires precision or lots of options work better with KB+M.

I'm used to both though, and have no problem with controllers.

It was no problem for me to switch, though I still prefer to play platformers like Braid and Trine with a controller (in this case a 360 controller). Otherwise, mouse and keyboard are OK. Got to learn to adapt.

dualshock 3 = mid tier

360 controller = low tier

You'll definitely feel like playing with a mouse and keyboard is harder, because all the other players are used to it, whereas you are not. You might die all the time, because the veterans simply are better than you.

Used a controller for a long time, then switched to PC gaming. Tried Halo Reach after a couple of months playing CSS and now I realize how much of a joke console FPS are. I actually feel bad for the consolites.

I meant I feel bad for consolites who play a fps with a controller. They don't understand how imprecise it is. I understand some games are better with a controller.

Yes, because we poor consolites have never played a PC game....
