There seems to be this "logic" going around that Killzone 2 flopped because "it cost too much to make". The figure that gets thrown around, whether true or not, is that the game cost $60 Million. Fanboy Lems then try and claim the game only sold 700,000 or so units (ignoring the fact that this was in two days).

However, if wikipedia is to be believed, there were 1.1 million pre-orders. So... basically, since the game retails at $60, and even if the only people that got the game were those that pre-ordered, the devs have already broken even (60 x 1.1 million = $66 Million).

Obviously, many many many more will buy this game in addition to those that pre-ordered, so already at this early stage is seems very clear that the devs have made a huge profit.. and that is before they license the engine to other devs...

There will obviously be a third game, based on the same engine, which will cost much less to make but will prob turn even higher profits. Lets not forget, Gears 1/2 was built upon an existing engine.. that is why they churn the games out so fast...

So how can people claim Killzone 2 flopped financially?

Your logic is very flawed. The game developers aren't getting anything close to $60 for each game sold...

taking into account halo was originally released in 2001.. and killzone 2 was released in 2009... it is a bit unfair to compare an 8 year old franchise with a month old franchise (taking into account the first KZ stank and is ignored by all)

So over a million in retail pre orders and 300 000 + first days sales is suspose to recover a 60 million dollar budget? Killzone 2 hasn't broken half a million in UK yet apparently so I don't know what you are talking about. Further more, these are just haters, ignore them, they don't know any better. Don't sink tothat level especially with incorrect data. I thought system wars didn't care about sales anyway? (I will say this in every sales related thread from now on to make a point)

Haha please forgive us, you're right." Not a chance in hell. Stop making these silly threads and you'll stop seeing it get bashed. Good grief out of the 4 types of fanboy, you guys are the worst.

Where is the press release from Sony saying it sold 1 million copies? Considering the fact that Microsoft already said Halo Wars sold 1 million copies about 3 weeks after launch I would have expected one from Sony and earlier in the month to boot.I think that is more telling than anything.

Only a fraction of the retail price goes to the developers. KZ2 is far from turning a profit right now. You're looking at 4+ million needed for that.

as much as this game gets bashed too much you do yourself no favour by basing your argument around a complete misunderstanding of how profit is generated.

The $60 million came from SurferGirl, and the preorders don't mean anything. Also, you are assuming that all $60 goes to Sony, which is not even close to that. Sony would be lucky to get half that in revenue. Part goes to the retailer, part goes to shipping costs, part goes to manufacturing, part goes to the developer in residuals, part goes to advertisement, etc.

But who cares what people say? KZ2 did not flop in scores, and if you get to play it, let the fanboys hate. No different than the legions of people who complain about Halo all the time.

Why is it o.k. to ignore KZ2? Don't pretend this is a new franchise. It has had a first game that sold quite well and a PSP game. This isn't some franchise no one heard of. The hype was big enough, everyone knew about this. It just hasn't lived up to that enormous hype, not even HALO 3 had that kind of hype!

But YOU guys are making all the threads.

If you are going to make a statement like that you would have to prove it now wouldn't you? Debating 101. If you are going to make argument you MUST provide evidence in order to add credibility to your statement. Currently your credibility is -10.

Lets hypothetically pretend Killzone 2 took an insane amount of 40 million to make and market. Then Sony sells at least one million for each major territory to retailers. Lets say the cut is a low number of $20 on average to Sony per unit on each one sold to retailers - after the retailers purchase the game for less, plus manufacturing/shipping costs of the product.

2 million copies X $20 each copy = 40 million minimum.

I don't think you need to worry about the investment. TREY 4 LI4E.

Yeah, but its not a wise idea to get behind games of that budget, as it takes a special breed of game to hit 2 million sold. The industry needs to start scaling back in places, IMO, or more and more devs will be shuttered or swallowed.

Sony are the ones who should be worrying about if KZ2 profits or not. From what I hear the game is fun and that's all that matters. Some may say that "Game sales do matter!". Not really...in System Wars anyways. Us bickering over sales isn't gonna make the sales increase or drop in the real world, so it's pointless.

No, Halo 3 is a longer game, but KZ2 campaign is waaaaay better than Halo, anyone who's completed, not just played, but completed will know how awesome the SP is. As for the multiplayer, well, there different, i'd say Halo MP is tighter, but maps, shooting and vehicles in KZ2 are better. Just that HUD map is a bit tatty.

Still a stupidly big budget. Also, Sony is probably closer to 15 dollars per unit. Then there is marketing and promotion. The game is not a failure, its just stupidly designed from a business stand point.

Also Killzone is not a new IP...this is their THIRD GAME! The second was a spinnoff...and dont let me bring you THOSE sales...lmao silly cows.

True , but not every game needs to be a AAA game/graphics king at the time of release to sell well. Even if this game happens to break even for Sony ..... it will be worth it for them. These kinds of game help the growth of platform sales ...... and the effort in the engine and experience gained with the hardware are likely going help them in the future.

Still a stupidly big budget. Also, Sony is probably closer to 15 dollars per unit. Then there is marketing and promotion. The game is not a failure, its just stupidly designed from a business stand point.

I took marketing off the top. And they shouldn't have to pay royalties to themselves like other developers for each game sold. It is definitely worth their time and energy. We got a kickarse game , it will help them sell more units than they would have otherwise to help their future , and the work done on the engine and experience gainedshouldhelp them down the road financially.

It ISN'T STUPID AT ALL ..... I feel it is Sony's obligation to push the platform and give gamers amazing content and lead the way. It is also their obligation to help other developers with game development.

Scared by the fact that a spin of of a franchise sold faster than you prefcious Killzone...LMAO...

Cybiotik

um killzone 2 is a new ip halo wars is HALO it's a big disapointment at the low sales it shouldve been at 5 or 6 million by now it's got halo on the cover. Killzone 2 right now is destroying it in sales.

Nope...people treat Halo Wars like a real Halo...nope sorry. Its a spin off. If you were to compare a Halo...why not Halo 3...oh thats right, cause it tears Killzone to shreads. Also Killzone is not a new IP...this is their THIRD GAME! The second was a spinnoff...and dont let me bring you THOSE sales...lmao silly cows.

dude you don't remember here lemmings was saying how killzone 2 probably would not sell well and how even an rts with the name halo was going to destroy it in salez. some were even saying how halo wars was going to outscore it as well. and guess what halo wars could not even outscore killzone 1 which was a flop and halo wars is not beating killzone 2 in sales even though the first 4 letters is HALO. it has been a big disapointment for xbox fans one of it's biggest names of 09 doing this bad. just because PS3 owners have yet to encounter a flop this year and xbox has tons youre trying to find any excuse it's sad to see.

I missed the marketing though I doubt the 40 million included marketing but lets pretend it did. 40 million is ridiculous and Killzone 2 isn't pushing hardware in any significannt way to justify that budget. Not even close. The engine works usefulness is beyond our knowledge but I personally seriously doubt anything of use will come from that engine besides like maybe 2 games. The only benefit I see is that the game was good.

And yes I think it was stupid. The game may be great but its a financial waste in my opinion and I hardly call it or any game by any 1st party at this point leading the way.
