And Halo gives me a reason to care about this because?
See nothing. I have not read the books, I have only played the games. I do not know what the forerunners really are nor do I really care. The Halo games do not have good storylines, they never have.
I was way more excited about Mass Effect's story than Halo's.

if halo didn't intrigue you enough for landing on a weapon of mass destruction that was intended to destroy an alien race, and it was built by an ancient race that is no longer around plus a second alien race that see's these as religious artifacts than probably not much interestes you. you can't make someone care about anything, you can just **** out a bad story like the killzone franchise, and for all the good aspects of it, it's hard to digest when the entire vibe killzone gives off is space nazi's.I never said Killzone had a good story either, it is a forgettable storyline and has zero character development. The characters in KZ are not even really characters, only the Helghast themselves are the only memorable characters in the game.
See Halo never shows the things you mentioned, what is the covenant religion? What is it like? Who is their deity? What was this ancient alien race? What were their values and beliefs? Who is Master Chief? What is his past like? Where did he grow up and what is he like under the helmet?
Halo never goes anywhere with it's story. As far as I'm concerned it's just about a space marine dude shooting aliens and zombies (flood). Halo never makes the story interesting at all. Not referring to the books, just the games.
Ok, since you're asking questions, I'll give you their answers!:D
What is the covenant religion?
A: The Covenant believe that the Forerunners (the builders of the Halos) were gods and that activating the Halo rings would send them on the Great Journey to paradise. basically they're extreme-religious nutjobs. It is also worth nothing that the Prophet of truth discovers that the Humans are descendands of the forerunners and that their whole religion is a lie. And yes, this is all explained in the game.
What were the Forerunners?
A: The forerunners were an ancient alien race that buit the Halo rings, and all the other ancient architecture you see in the games. Al long time ago, the flood overwhelmed them, so they built the Halos and sacrificed themselves for the rest of the species in the galaxy. They preserved easch of the species in a sort of "Noah's Ark" fashion ensuring they would live on once they were gone.
Who is the Master Chief?
A: this question is one that is sort of had to explain, because the Master Chief, while having a lot of backstory, hasn't been explained well in the Halo games (something 343 is trying to change in Halo 4, I might add.)
Basically, he is the best (and one of the last) of the Spartan-II program designed by Dr. Halsey, super-soldiers designed to end humanitys war with Insurrectionists, who want independance from the Eearth governament. What they didn't know, however, is that the Spartans would prove invaluable in the surprise war with the Covenant. Master Chief's backstory is entirely explained in the novel Halo: The Fall of Reach.
