Kotaku GOTY line-up. No MGS4.

Kotaku doesn't even have an actual award. Bangai-O spirits made it in one of the editors list... I guess that should be considered a GOTY contender :|

Gamespot is not what it used to be for a while now, so they are pretty irrelevant.

Seems odd MGS4 didn't even get nominated but at least they've not jumped on the hype wagon, there choices are a bit more reasonable even with the lack of MGS.

I remember reading the review for Valkyria Chronicles on Kotaku. I stoped reading where it said it was WW2 girlified. How can I take that seriously? Anyway, it is for that reason that I am suprised to see it be mentioned. I just hope GTA4 dosn't win, I fail to see what is so revolutionary about the game, and I fail even worse at seeing how the game improves upon it's predessecor in anyway when not looking at it from a technical perspective.WasntAvailable

I'll tell you what I think about them: Kotaku time and time again posts stories containing negative-controversial bias to keep their declining traffic/popularity afloat. Naturally (with their bias/preferences), the connotations and vibe blatantly favor Microsoft and the 360 whilst denouncing or overtly criticizing Sony at any chance possible. I stopped going to that site earlier this fall and I'm a better gamer for it LOL.

Still, it's their right to say what games they liked the most this year, but their journalistic integrity has diminished over the years.

I think I'll check it again, because my mind may just be making stuff up, but I am pretty sure there was a comment made very close to that.

Yeah that was it, "World War II gets a girlie makeover". Pretty stupid comment if you ask me. The reviewer seems to have been generally positive, but was going off on a tangent about comparing it to the actual events of WW2. It's not meant to logically follow the events of the second world war, and it's not about Switzerland or Poland or any other country, it's about a fictional country called Gallia that is not designed to 100% represent anything specifically. For one it's not even democratic. Sorry, that annoyed me. The game is still fantasy, I don't see why someone would be so obbsesed with refrencing it with real life. I don't know what the reviewers problem with the refrence to ant-semitism was. Seemed perfectly fine to me. If someone was to complain about anything it should really be about the way in which the game almost demonises everyone, which isn't nessecarily fair. Though in part is does make sense, it dosn't go into enough detail to justify that (In case you were wondering I was refering the fact that the Germans and Russians both invaded Poland at the same time as part of an agreement. Poland was also said to have been betrayed by the British and pretty much everyone else.)

I'm going off on a tangent myself.

Anyway, it dosn't seem like Kotaku take their reviews very seriously, seem more like short summaries than anything else. Like what you would attach to a product description on a website like amazon. I don't mean to sound mean, or fanboyish here, but I don't think Kotaku can be considered influential critics, and considering that I don't see why I should be intrested in their GotY over a website like Gamespot or Eurogamer (Who will likely not nominate MGS4 for GotY). They seem to be more about reporting news than actually talking about the games themselves.

And rightfully so. Kotaku are sensible people who maintain an objective and unrestricted approach to analyzing the gaming media unlike the "professional" publications like IGN and GameSpot who are essentially required to worship games with media hype and bestow good scores upon games that don't particularly make an impression simply for the game's professional presentation and reputation. Metal Gear, great fun for a short time, good presentation, stale and tired story that makes no sense to anyone who hasn't done their research. LittleBigPlanet, New IP, great fun for a long time with a slew of constantly-updated user content, easy for new players and more importantly: FUN. Kotaku understands, just as all of us do, that Metal Gear missed its mark. It finally had the gameplay and structure right, but the story holding it together had gone too far, becoming far too esoteric and inapplicable.Seriously, Big Boss? Please. As an avid Metal Gear fan, I can honestly say that, for a series that has made so much headway in videogame storytelling, the whole thing was incomprehensible and practically meaningless.cutmaclass1

You can find rough aspects of script-writing and dialogue in pretty much every game out there. If you created a story-heavy based game in English and tried to sell it to a Japanese crowd, I'm sure you wouldn't think things would be as easy as you are describing.

Lord of the Rings for example, just can't go right in Japanese, no matter how many professional script writers/translators have tried. One really famous translator pretty much ruined her reputation trying.

That said, MGS4, from Japanese to English, still manages to do an excellent job... hence the story/voice-over/dialogue awards it has been getting.

MGS4 either loses an boatload in translation, or is incredibly poorly written - or aimed more at a teenage / manga audience.

i appreciate previous MGS games, loved 1 - but ffs, MGS4 is just mental. it's the most zany, heavy handed, overly moralistic, poorly edited, farcical mess of a convoluted plot / story i have ever witnessed.

and that is saying a LOT.

i guess it just really appeals to a niche group or hardcore fans - and people that don't mind the ridiculousness of the whole thing. to each their own i guess. and NO. i do not care about multiplat. i've played through what i could on PS3, and watched the rest - time I wish I could get back. but i foolishly trusted some people in here that said it was a must play.

i dunno what it is about MGS, but it certainly is a polarizing series.. like no other. there isn't a single series that comes close to drawing the same degree of contempt from me. it just makes me want to slap Kojima with a massive dead trout.

at the moment. but like i've said before - the moment sony steps up to the plate and offers me more than franchises i don't care about then i'll be the first guy in line buying one again ;).

i want me some new ips. i hate the new FF games, hate the new MGS games, didn't like Drake's, didn't like Resistance, etc.

MGS4 is my game of the year, I'm a huge MG fan, and yet I still think that the game took the story to ridiculous heights. My friends watched me play much of the game and I can't count the times they said,"Get out of here!" or "What?"...even those who are sort of familiar with the lore. The game is awesome, especially the wonderfully overhauled gameplay, but apologists have to stop ripping apart everyone who criticize the problems prevalent in the story.

It was a good, satisfying story at it's core...it just needed to be trimmed down a helluva lot. Akiba also needed to be completely scrapped. Seriously, Johnny is a fun character, but only when kept to a minimum...his antics throughout the game, especially the out of no where, incredibly forced love story with Meryl, were just obnoxious. Kojima could have handled bringing Meryl and Snake's relationship to an end without having to throw that garbage in.

As for Kotaku...whatever, it's their opinion.
