I'm a dedicated wii player and I think it's an awesome console. My friends, on the other hand, all have PS3's and 360's and say the wii just plain sucks. This obviously isn't true because the Wii has some great games. I started thinking. When you turn on the TV you see a lot of ads for the ps3 and 360 third party hardcore games and only family friendly nintendo ads for the wii.

Is this a contributing factor? Has lack of advertising led to the Wii being a laughing stock among hardcore gamers?

~AND~

If they showed more ads for the hardcore games on the Wii (i.e. Deadspace Extraction) would it boost sales?

I would have to say it does. I own all current gen consoles and the Wii's marketing strategie is sooooo "E for everyone" I think it will hurt their sales after it saturates every household. I dont want to say I hate the Wii. I loved Mario and Zelda on the 64 but man......they really want that cash. So I cant hate them for their get rich quick campaign but I am no longer a fan.

I see just as many Wii commercials as I do for PS3 and 360, however, the Wii ones mostly show shovelware games.

Lately, the only commercial that I've seen for the Wii with a good game is Wii Sports Resort.

The whole family friendly campaign tends to lead on other gamers that the Wii just doesn't have any hardcore games. But take no offense, these are the same people that think playing Halo/Madden/COD/Etc makes them hardcore.

it couldnt hurt. but its not nintendos resposibility to advertise 3rd party games....thats the publishers job. so you cant really blame nintendo for the lack of advertising of 3rd party games. ninty themselves do a fairly good job of advertising their own games, from games like wii fit to games like metroid prime trilogy. thats for both the wii and DS.

I would say your friends just are uninformed and possibly hypocrits if they think PS3 and 360 are "hardcore". If they think in those terms then by their own standards they themselves are not what they strive to be because the PC is clearly geared more in that direction than their consoles are.

the wii adverts in the uk are more about the celebs doin the advertising and the "group gaming" than the actual games themselves it seems to me, the 360/ps3 ads are always about the games

funnily enough, most of the 360 and Ps3 adds i see are related to non gaming features. MS themselves seem to be toting the movie service more than the games for the 360 and sony just have their usual "it does everything" line and some quick shots of a variety of games and other stuff. no one company seems focused on the games themselves really this Xmas. i have only seen adds for uncharted 2 today and that was relased a month or so ago. this is in ireland (so the same add campaigns apply i think).

Yes.

There are lots of great games for the Wii as many has mentioned, but hardly any of them break the 100k mark. (I don't even know if they break the 50k mark, I don't own a Wii or keep much track of the niche game sales).

Sort of. In my group of friends we all know the Wii is the weakest of the 3 but we all also enjoy them all equally. Before the Wii can gain "hardcore" respect, it needs better stronger more mainstream mature games. It needs games like RE5 and LP2, games like Dead Space never stood a chance. If a AAA dead space effort by EA turns out to get Luke Warm reception and disappoint them does anyone really think that on rails deadspace on the system with the least violence tolerant userbase is going to fair well? Thought so. Stuff like Silent Hill, Little Kings Story and Klonoa need advertising though. If people were aware they existed I'm sure there would be a lot of potential buyers. Stuff like Klonoa would easily have a userbase in NA over stuff like Deadspace.

This. Hardcore games don't need to advertise, or don't have the money to pull off a decent advertising campaign. Generally, hardcore games rely on word of mouth, and people finding them, not masses of hype.

The Wii commercial campaign don't help it's image for a "hardcore" demographic. Nintendo has made it's bed, catering to casuals and promoting it's console as a "family gaming device", now it has to sleep in it.

Now for a business moving consoles for profit, this is an great campaign.... it's been working. It will go down as one of the most successful campaigns in gaming history (I happen to be in advertising btw).

If they are at all trying to capture the rest of us, they are failing. (frankly, I don't think they care)

I enter these vids as evidence.

I cant find the one where Chris didn't go out with his buddies because he was having so much fun playing Wii with his family, his mother on the couch looking like shes about to poor out tears of joy.

Who are they selling to? the son? the daughter? the father?.... Hint: The one not playing the game at the end. (I'm upset I cant find it)

I thought it was the other way around with "casual" games, as its buyers tend not to read gaming magazines or visit gaming sites and depend on word-of-mouth. Not only that, compared to "hardcore" games, "casual" games maintain solid sales for many months most due to word-of-mouth.

I live in a country where there is no game advertising whatsoever and every MALE GAMER above the age of 12thinks the Wii SUCKS and laughs at it. I bought one wii so just I could have something to laugh when there is no episodes of South park or Seinfield on TV.

The Wii is a laughing stock in the entire world (excluding japan, retirement homes, 3rd graders classrooms or hidrogynamstics classes)

On the contrary I think the 360 and PS3's lack of advertising more family friendly games hurts their sales. Not many parents want to buy a system so their 10 year old can play Killmurdereviscerate 3.

When it comes to kids/pre-teens/teens and to some extent, manbabies, it comes all down to how the product is being marketed. The PS360 are heavily marketed as super hi-tech mature gadgets with the "cool" factor in full force. Doesnt surprise me at all that they eat up this marketing ploy, considering the typical mentality of an angsty teen.

It doesn't seem like it, but it is a HUGE factor. Most hardcore games you find on the wii most people wouldn't even know about because they're almost never advertised.

Just because you're a hardcore gamer and you don't like that now half of their games are casual, doesn't mean the system sucks. According to those parents and sisters buying the wii, the ps3 and 360 suck for only having nerdy games, and their opinions don't equal fact either.

I said most parents, not all. There are indeed some parents who are stupid. I know quite well of the 12 year olds on xbox live. Thats just funny to me since it seems to show hardcore mature games appeal more to young kids.

I don't think it's a contributing factor, I think it is THE factor in the Wii getting trashed. Not that Nintendo cares they're off making billions of dollars, but the fact that games like MadWorld only saw brief snippet commercials, and games like No More Heroes got absolutely no slots on TV is clearly why these games are being ignored. I don't think any console with MW, NMH, Little King's Story (yes, play that game and you'll realize how mature it actually is on the inside), Legend of Zelda, Metroid Prime, and Super Mario Galaxy can be called kiddy. It just is called kiddy because all the big mature games get no publicity. You can't blame people for saying the Wii is kiddy when all they know about is Wii Fit, Wii Sports, and then some Mario games (which are obviously for gamers but can also entertain kids). They just don't know about the hardcore games that go unnoticed.

With Red Steel 2, Monster Hunter 3, Metroid: Other M, Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom, Super Mario Galaxy 2, No More Heroes 2, Epic Mickey, and Sin & Punishment 2 coming out as heavy hitters in 2010, hopefully we'll see increased advertising for the hardcore games.

Either way I could care less. Nintendo continues to make fantastic games, I continue to play them, they make ass loads of money from the casual market which in turn does nothing but help them produce even better games for me and all the gamers. Sure someone might tell me that it's for 7 year olds or whatever, but a) I don't care and b) I just wave my ultra-manly PS3 in their face and they shut up :P.

Well see the reason I quoted you is because I don't think its most that care for what their children play. There are just so many kids playing games WAY too old for them that there are probably more bad parents than good ones.

What's "hardcore"? :?

Well to them it clearly means every inch of the screen is covered in blood or bullets........ But good question, what do we mean by hardcore? When I see the word, I think of it as meaning a game that provides at least a decent challenge and is time consuming (by which I don't mean it takes a long time, I'm trying to say that it has to have basically a coherent "Story Mode" rather than just being a collection of mini games). The content itself is irrelevant, as long as it provides gameplay that is more than just minigames and actually has a campaign/story mode of some sort. I'd consider a game like Legend of Zelda to be far more hardcore than a game like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, it doesn't have a pretty tacked on worthless 3 hour campaign then a ton of online, it has a single player story mode that takes 50 hours, it's the main (and often only) focus of the game. It's a bit hard to follow, I know, but this is what I'd define a hardcore game as. I would not define an online FPS as a very hardcore game, I'd say it's a game that could appeal to hardcore gamers, but would for the most part appeal to casual teenage gamers. When CoD:MW2 came out, everyone bought it, except me. Literally everyone, mostly people who hadn't played games for a while or anything. Then I, one of the people who actually consistently plays games, didn't get it. Similarly many of my friends who actually play games a good bit didn't buy it. Just goes to show that many of the people that consider themselves to be quite hardcore are largely casual who get hooked on a violent game once every year or so then play it forever.

What's "hardcore"? :?

The general public views hardcore as people who pay lots of money for the best graphics and buys those popular games

Nope. They still view hardcore gamers as fat, pale basement dwellers that never saw a naked woman in real life. Hardcore is actually a pejorative word. Its mostly used to lable excessive and unhealthy behaviors. Thats one of the reasons i fail to see why the dedicated press keeps using this stupid word. And they actually use it as a compliment too smh

What are hardcore games then if not those major flagship IP's that are discussed by so-called hardcore gamers the whole day?
