Yes ps3 is getting a price cut says insider. I think i'll wait till sony says something. And whats stopping microsoft from dropping the price of the 360 again. If they do that then your back to square one for sony since microsoft has a larger library of games and is still cheaper than the ps3. Heck the 360 would still be cheaper than the ps3 even after sony's price drop.
M$ cant afford to do another price cut, they are already losing billions , plus the PS3 is actually a quality console
Yet they are making a profit on every 360 sold. They also make money on Windows, Xbox Live, etc. They don't just make money on the console. Don't underestimate how much money microsoft has. Look at how much they payed to get exclusive episodic content on the 360.
While each PS3 costs 900$ to make...Sold at 600$ that's a 300$ loss per PS3 for Sony. How does that leave them?
Also I was reading a comment made here about the price cut not affecting the sales of the PS3. Well if you go to high school and live in a neighborhood full of freshmen/middle schoolers then you'd know that 400 bucks = Xmas gift for sure. So yea you won't see much of sales increase this month (or next), but by November that is when the turbines start to spin for Sony (you can quote me that SOny will make atleast 2 million consoles by March 08 if the price cut is kept the same).
*Oh also it's rumored to release with a BD version of Spider Man 3 (the movie).

Not very much because there software attach rate is pathetic at best! unlike the 360 which is killing everyone including the Wii in the software attach rate. This is where the real money is the Consoles are loss leaders. they lost money on the console and make it up with software. Sony must be hurting bad.

All different divisions. Can you imagine how much Sony is making through Blu-Ray, TVs, HiFis, Phones, etc?Not all of it goes to the games division, because the company has to be run as a whole.

I agree. I've been saying here that MS wins money from everything else, Sony does too. BUT, MS IS making profit from 360, Xbox Live AND the games. Sony just makes money from PS2 and PS2 games. They loose to much money on PS3s AND no PSN(Charging). PS2 won't last forever and Sonymust show it's rivals they mean businessin a BIG way.

Isn't Sony selling of part of their insurance division to funnel to their games division?
When has MS ever had to do that?

Not true Microsoft pulled a profit the quarter that halo2 came out but so far they have lost like 6 billion getting their gaming division going
It's funny how Xbox haters use "M$" and "can't afford" in the same sentence.
That's an oxymoron
TC, if Sony drops to $400, what makes MS drop the core to $199 or even lower, along with the premium and elite? In a price war, MS is in a considerably better position: Cheaper to manufacture, and closer to the sub 200 price that really makes sales explode...
M$ cant afford to do another price cut, they are already losing billions , plus the PS3 is actually a quality console
blackhorsemen
Um... currently, Sony is losing more on the PS3 than MS on the 360... including every aspect of the systems (accessories, games, etc). Just for perspective, the PS division is losing money at a similar rate than the original xbox... and the PS division is taking the PS2 and PSP (both profitable, as far as I know) into account.

Here's the difference. Sony has built value in the hardware. They've stuck to their price, for the most part, through all of the complaining. They've had fantastic reliability. 360, oin the other hand, has not done so well. Terrible reliability and price cut after price cut, the 360's value is at a low point. Why would MS be stupid enough to devalue it futher?
Its like cars. There's cars like Honda, Toyota, and VW that rarely, if ever, give any incentives to buy. Their incentive is the quality of the product delivered. but makers like Nissan, Mitsubishi, and Chrysler, for example, almost give their cars away with rebates and other incentives. Hence, Honda, Toyota, and VW's resale values are much much higher.

I dont think itll be the death of the 360. but if the ps3 cant keep its numbers close to the 360 with a 600$ price tag, then youd have to be ignorant to think the ps3 wont outsell the 360 with a 400$ PT.

Because they just launched a console, and that tends to happen. At the same point during the launch of the 360, Microsoft had lost around 4 times that.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_360#Sales
"However, despite these sales figures, Microsoft's gaming division is losing money. Up to 2005, the Xbox gaming division had lost over $4 billion dollars.[94] However, Microsoft expects the console will start making money in 2008.[95] The losses are due to the market strategy of selling consoles below cost in order to obtain market saturation and turn a profit on software and peripherals that have a much higher profit margin.[96][97] Also notable is that Microsoft expects it needs to spend one billion dollars for repairs or replacements of bricked Xbox 360s.[83]"

If they lower the price for the ps2 again I dont think they will be making has much profit and if sony were smart they would avoid anothere price drop and keep the 60 gig in circulation and introduce or eliminate the 80 gig altogether to save money than lower the price of sixty gig and than reintroduce an 80 gig they have released too much in the past if they were smart they would of kept the 20 gig.

and sony can? they lose over $100 on every console sold, more now that the 60 gig is $499. a 40 gig ps3 won't be much cheaper to make than an 80 gig so sony will lose more than ms does, they already lose more than ms.

A $400 PS3 will be the death of Sony, not MS. Sony isn't a big enough company to sustain those kind of losses for each console sold. but I agree, they need to do something if they want to get back in this war.
