Um Master Chief is his rank not his name and it is a real rank in the US Navy.

It is the highest enlisted rank you can attain. In the military you generally address someone by their rank and not their name and since Master Chief doesn't even have a formal name everyone just calls him by his rank.

I dont see what the big deal is, in the Navy a Chief is the same as a Sargent in the army. The highest ranking Sargent is the Master Sargent so it makes sense for the highest Chief to be the Master Chief.
