Each of these brought something dramatically new, and expanded the FPS genre. I would be shocked if there is a title missing from here. *flameshield on*

In order:

Wofenstein 3D

DOOM

Quake 2

System Shock

Golden Eye

Half Life

Deus Ex

Counter Strike

Tribes

Battlefield 1942

Half Life 2

I'm sure this is going to bring a lot of flaming, but let's be realistic. No other FPS games outside the one's listed above, revolutionized the FPS genre and expanded it in a significant way. If you want clarification on any these titles, just ask if you really don't know. If you think a title is missing from the list, please feel free to say so... but chances are, it's probably not revolutionary.

Hard to disagree with that list.

You may catch a lot of heat for excluding Halo: Combat Evolved.

Don't know if Portal belongs there. It's a good game, but not what I'd call revolutionary.

I agree to a degree. I was reluctant to put it up, but did so anyways. Removed.

Halo: Comat Evolved.

TheAnnihilation
I'd say that for console shooters (after GoldenEye) Halo implemented many loose standards for the genre and was used as a standard to be graded by.

I would take Half Life 2 off that list..it was basically Half Life 1+gravity gun. Half Life 2 was fantastic, definantly one of the best FPS last gen(and this gen for that matter) but i wouldn't call it a revolution. Especially compared to the other games listed. Deus Ex is far more impressive.... Although i would say whatever was the FIRST FPS/RPG game should be on that list. What was that System SHock 1?

Half Life 2 was the first game to bring a meaningful implementation of physics to FPSs. I would certainly say the addition of physics, and it's implementation is certainly a revolutionary factor.

So safe to say with that list, then we can put to rest all of these "your game isn't revolutionary enough" threads right. I mean that only happens once in a blue moon. And as to be expected usually only once for a certain critera or else your doing nothing but coping lol.

And Halo fans I hate to break this to ya, well not really lol, but Halo's gameplay is something that PC fans had been enjoying for a while prior to its release. Maybe revolutionary that it was brought to consoles but not for its gameplay.

Good list, but Quake comes after Doom, not Quake 2. Quake was the first game to do online deathmatch multiplayer, after Doom got the modem-to-modem stuff down.

Revolutionary is doing it first for the genre. Halo never did anything first... including being crtically acclaimed and well recieved by the public. Goldeneye sold something like 8 million copies and also got plenty of high 9 votes, including a 9.8/10 from GS.

It did add one vital thing, although correct me if im wrong. Having grenades mapped to a single button rather than being part of a weapon cycle has changed games quite a lot. I think Halo was the first for this.

Except for bringing console FPS to the masses, i admit goldeneye did this first but after goldeneye and perfect dark we had what? I can't think of anything till red faction. What have we had since Halo? Bucket loads of FPS.

Halo also proved a console fps can be just as good as a PC FPS, despite what the local nerds on here would have you believe. It also brought console FPS to the competitive world.

It did a lot, you just choose to ignore it. Even with that said, the amount of fame and it's populairty alone demands a place on any list.

I would suggest either Team Fortress (generic version, I'm not going to debate whether the old Quake versions were more or less influential than Team Fortress Classic) and/or Return to Castle Wolfenstein for successfully introducing team based multiplayer with distinct classes, and were more than just team deathmatch. Edit: Just noticed Tribes and CS, which are arguably more influential, although TF was around during the Q2 days.

More specific blatantly you haven't played Thief or AVP then? AVP Added 3 Races to play as! One of the races allowed you to climb all over the walls and ceiling the other used technology like, cloak and infa Red Thief is a stealth FPS the first one ever as far as i know on top of that it was based around sword play and the Bow and Arrow. They both deserve to be up there.

overall good list. couple of things though. 1) halo1 belongs on that list imho. at the time it really gave the genre a kick in the backside. 2 and 3 are nothing special (there complete wastes imho) but i think 1 diserves some recognition. 2) this is debated it has to be said, but id argue that deus ex is not a FPS but is more of an RPG played in the first person perspective. to call it a FPS would also insinuate that a game like oblivion or morrowind would also be a FPS. its the best game ever made imho but its not a FPS.

Nice list but it lacks some games like:

Alien Vs Predator

Halo C.E.

Rainbow Six

Oh and Deus Ex shouldn't be on that list. To call it a shooter is kinda insulting IMO.
