He gave Smash Bros. Brawl a 4/5. Seriously, is this some kind of joke? Something tells me he would have rated it an 8.0 on here if he reviewed it.

he gets paid for what he does, what do you get paid to follow him around and talk crap about him?
It's either 4/5 stars or 5/5 stars. Personally I would've chossed 5/5 but still he seems to not think the game is not perfect. Also... don't forget that rating a game out of 5 is much more difficult than rating it out of 100... The star system jumps by 20%, the normal jumps by 1% .
They really should set a universal standard scale of game rating.
i don't think he gives out half star ratings. just live with it.shoeman12
Well he should. A 1-5 with no .5 increments is a heavily flawed rating system.

So your going to get upset because one person didn't rate it a 9.5. How lame. He has his own opinion and you have yours so stop looking like an idiot and get over it.

4/5= 80%, but because his system apparently has no half-stars, it could have been a 9/10. Who knows.

8/10 is still high quality. You're obviously brainwashed by System Wars.Did you even read the review? He raises extremely valid points and STILL gave the game 4/5 stars. I love SSBB to death, but playing the game single-player is just dull to me i'm sorry. You need at least 2 or more people to get the full enjoyment of the title. And not through the internet, I'm sorry but the online in SSBB just doesn't offer anywhere near the level of enjoyment having people near you playing does.
To be fair, he even states that in his general area, he doesn't have many friends who are huge fans of the series. Remember he is a famous gaming journalist living in LA, they just don't have the time to go play. SSBB is an awesome game but with flaws which keep it from being far from perfect. It's gameplay is amazingly fun in the proper context and he does a great job at pointing out that fact.
I think his review was really well written and did a great job at describing what the game has to offer you if your interested. If you didn't like the review, do yourself a favor and DON'T GO TO HIS SITE. Guess what, he has his own site now and so far the reception has been very positive. I like the style of writing because he breaks himself down to a gamer and speaks to me as a gamer, something that reviewers tend to forget to do these days.

haha giantbomb..still cant get over that name..much better than gamespot lol. Dont ban me now. I dont think he gives out half-a-stars so that might be the reason for 4 starts.
Ya..it's official, Gertsmann is anti-Nintendo. majadamus
I think being fired for being honest and then being overly and obviously biased another time is just unlikely.

I actually didn't know the site existed at first. I saw a 4/5 on Gamerankings, and clicked on it only to be taken to a review written by Jeff.
Even though technically 4/5 = 80%, I don't feel like star systems correspond with percentage systems all too well. 4/5, from my history with this system, means an amazing, incredibly game/movie/book etc. 5/5 is awarded to those incredibly rare things that just stand higher than the rest and shouldn't be given out lightly. They are equivilent to 10/10 and nothing lower.
The major difference between star systems and percentage systems is that, in the past, 3/5 has always meant a good, positive game/move/book etc, while that would translate into 60% - which isn't all too flash when you look at it.
At the end of the day, I just don't think star rating system and percentage rating system gel together, and you can't really compare the two.
How about the way he intended? How we should view the scale.
5 star - 9.0 + (AAA)
4 star - 8.0 - 8.9 (AA)
Burnout and Professer Layton = AAA
SSBB = AA

5 Star - Great
4 Star - Above Average
3 Star - Average
2 Star - Below Average
1 Star - Bad
You're all obsessed with scores. Here's an idea: actually read the review instead of just looking at the score. There's no way you can tell if you should buy a game by just looking at the score. But I guess you people don't care about actually buying games anymore, all you care about is 'ownage'.
IMO Jeff's review of SSBB is the best I have read, it sums up everything you need to know about the game concisely and eloquently. And unlike a certain other review, he doesn't factually contradict himself within the space of two paragraphs.
Because of their score system, Giant Bomb is always going to be a site for gamers, not system warriors.

Jeff stated in his podcasts that viewing his scores like this are not the way he intends them to be viewed. He has stated that the 5 star score is not what should matter to anyone, it's the written review. Most people on SW don't read reviews because of the fact that there is a 1-10 scale(increments of .5). If anything, Jeff is Anti-Fanboy. You guys still fail to listen to the only credible voice in the industry. And If you seriously hate his review... AND own the game, Play the single player, that is where SSBB does not shine too well compared to multiplayer. He reviewed the game based on it's entirety as a whole (single & multiplayer) It's a great game, but he reviewed the game without experiencing the so called "hype" this gamereceived. Because of this, his review has more honesty than most reviews.

I listened to the podcast , I was just giving a suggestion to the people of SW that like to play the AAA/AA game.Giving out scores (or stars) serves a purpose just like any other site. They all want you to read the review but realise not everyone wants to or neccessarily needs to read the review to get what they need to get out of it.
4/5? isn't that the equivalent to 9/10?GUNpoint_

4/5 is not the same thing as 8.0. its a 5 star scale. 4 is a great game probably AA but its hard to say whether its like 8.9 AA or 8.0. either way hes acknowleding that the game has enough flaws not to be 5/5 which is basically AAA and not perfect.
its a huge misconception that people here think 5/5 means perfect. it doesnt. 5/5 is AAA and if the review states the game is perfect (unlikely) then u can call it AAAA
Ive heard a lot of hype about this game over the past few months and i had never played a smash bros game. Now im a big halo fan and i know that that game has been hyped to no end,and i understand not every single person on the planet enjoys halo. The other day i bought smash bros for the wii becauase i bought into the hype and i have to say i just dont get it.Its an alright fighter that controls well but it just isnt something i find myself wanting to play over and over.I guess im just not a fan .Its definatly not a bad game its just a game that wasnt made in my best interests but im sure a lot of people can say the same thing about halo.Anyways i kindeve agree with jeffs review. Its a good game if your a fan but if your not u might not like the game.

Why do you even need to klassify it as AA, AAA or AAAA? Why are scores so important anyway? A score system from 0 to 1000 will still not tell you as much about the game as reading the review would.
