Looks like 4K gaming will start to happen sooner than I thought (on PC ofcourse)

I know consolites, 4K doesn't matter.

Cry some more.

Anyway, The new AMD powerhouse, the R9 290X will be available for pre-order in Oct 3rd.

6 Billion Transistors.

300 GB/s memory bandwitdh with a 512 bit memory bus.

4 Gigs of dedicated GDDR5.

5 (!$$#!!!) Tera Flops of compute performance.

AMD is basically billing it as the first card to make 4K gaming possible, specially thanks to "to the metal" optimizaitons possible thanks to the Mantle API.

The only block left to fall is decent 4K panels that are withint a resonable price.

I think I'm going to save up and 2014 will be the year I go 4K.  Anyone else that crazy too?

Naw. Pixel density is one of those things you just can't miss. Even on a screen as small a phone subtle changes to resolution are noticeable.

No, that also is dependant on how close you sit to the screen. Not just the size itself.

My next monitor purchase will be a 4k tv... but it probably won't happen for a couple of years... b/c I don't hate money enough.

People see what they want to see. I have 20/20 vision and I can barely see any difference between 720p, 1080p, and a Retina Display on anything under a 6 inch screen. Even my original Nexus 7, which is 800p, looks insanely good if you don't hold it next to your eye.

Probably 30+ inches 4K panel I would imagine. 27" would be too small even for 2-4 feet away.

It has the moemry bandwidth and footprint for 4K. IT';l; come down to compute performance, but it's over twice as powerful as a PS4.

Maybe not MAXED/ULTRA at 60 FPS, but high/Very high at 50-60 should be doable.

Anbd that's NOW. I won't be looking for a screen until end of 2014/early 2015. By then the next cards will drop as well, meaning I cna pick up 2 280's or 290's for less, or a single one of the new GPU's.

I highly doubt that you're looking for or paying enough attention to the details then. I have horrible vision and without my glasses I can easily tell the difference between 720p and 1080p on a phone or even on a 22" LCD. It's very noticeable it's just most likely you don't care enough to notice it which isn't a bad thing because I wish I was like that. I can no longer play pc games at 720p even if I get a more stable frame rate. I hate my eyes for that now because its very annoying and distracting. So you're lucky in my opinion, but again if you know what to look for it becomes very noticeable regardless of screen size.

I've got a 27 inch monitor at 1440p and it's a bit smallish. In games it's great. The detial is amazing, but on desktop duty I need to scale things up a bit sometimes, or move the monitor closer than my preferred 4 feet or so.

So I guess 4K would be fine, But I'd need to scale up my desktop.

lol, cuz resolution makes games bettah!!!

even if i had a pc that would run 4k i would still put the power allocation into things i think are more important like draw distance, particle effects, ground clutter, lighting, water effects and so on.

resolution is always the last thing i bump up after everything else has been maxed.

I won't be switching to 4k anytime soon, just because it would make my older games that run in lowe resolutions look absolutely terrible. Fallout scaled up to my native resolution is already really tiny, I doubt I would be able to see anything at 4k resolution.

No, you're right about a 22" LCD. I can't play at 720p on those either (for PC games at least). I meant more for like comparing a 720p 5 inch phone to a 1080p 5 inch phone. I've held both in my hands at the same time and while there's a difference it was more a difference of color and manufacturing quality (i.e. contrast and such) and not a discernible difference in noticeable pixelation.

Love to but I cant game on the PC unless its on a 120hz moinitor. Its mainly the fast pace FPS that look bad at 60hz, and its probably the only thing I would play on the PC. So I'll stick to what I have. Cant see myself getting a 4k TV or monitor any time soon either. In 5 or 6 years maybe.

I don't know, I just feel like we're at the point where resolution is outpacing the capability of our graphics chips. It wasn't until recently that cards could even play something like the original Crysis at slightly above 1080p on maxed out settings with AA at a constant 60fps. This AMD chip is a great start, but until something as powerful as that is priced around $100 I doubt 4K will become mainstream anytime soon. For example, Titan only plays Crysis 3 maxed at 1200P at 38fps...at 4K it would be a slideshow.

Well when browsing websites, watching movies and playing games I notice a difference. With the homecreen I don't notice much of a difference except widgets using up less space, but browsing is definitely easier with a 1080p display.

How many times does it have to be explained that CGI level graphics are not possible at 1080p? MOVIES can be CGI quality at 1080p, because they're not rendered in real time. And when the rendering  is  done (long before you see the film), it's at much higher resolutions. For CGI-quality in real-time, higher resolutions (among other things) are necessary.

i've never seen any 4k pc monitors yet for sale, i'm thinking cause they costs thousands and nobody would buy them yet? i've seen larger 60-70 inch tv types for upwards of 20-30 thousand dollars. i don't think people are gonna be switching anytime soon if the cost of 4k pc monitors is similar. I have a 2560x1440 monitor and i don't see much need for anything higher, any edges i can remove with 2x-4x AA easily. actually some games actually look better on my 1080p tv then they do on my 2k monitor.

[QUOTE="Spartan070"]...all with a 27" 4K moniter for less than the price of a PS4 right?lowe0

Probably 30+ inches 4K panel I would imagine. 27" would be too small even for 2-4 feet away.

Who said anything about a PS4? Can a PS4 game at 4K? Can it run photoshop, premier and Visual Studio?  Jeebus.

Why would I need it to? Shouldn't whoever is paying me to produce something using VS be providing a workstation that will run it?

Because nobody who's not a working professional would ever use Visual Studio for any purpose, right?

They do, but I always have my own personal projects I like ot work with on my own PC. There are other day to day tasks that I can't do easily or at all on a gaming console, that I CAN do on a PC. Like replying to your post :)

i've never seen any 4k pc monitors yet for sale, i'm thinking cause they costs thousands and nobody would buy them yet? i've seen larger 60-70 inch tv types for upwards of 20-30 thousand dollars. i don't think people are gonna be switching anytime soon if the cost of 4k pc monitors is similar. I have a 2560x1440 monitor and i don't see much need for anything higher, any edges i can remove with 2x-4x AA easily. actually some games actually look better on my 1080p tv then they do on my 2k monitor.nicecall

Increasing resolution isn't just about removing jagged edges. It's about actual level of detail. The more pixels, the more detail. That's why people have been so upset about the new consoles still not enforcing a 1080p standard.  Current-gen  games already have detailed enough textures that less than 1080p won't display them properly. Even games that aren't considered to be the top-of-the-line graphics games. Dark Souls, for instance. The PC version is a bare-bones port of the 360 version, with all the same assets, including textures. When you compare the game at default resolution (360 res, 720p-ish), to the exact same textures being rendered in 1080p with DSfix, there's more detail immediately visable, on almost all surfaces and items.

Games have already hit the point that increasing level of detail on objects and textures won't do anything without also increasing render resolution.

Can't say I've needed to in years. I spend way too much time working to write code for free when I get home. What percentage of gamers need a pro grade IDE, or a graphic design suite, or a video editing and effects suite?

2014? So by 2016 it should be to the point where PC users get about 12 games a year that use 4k with half of those being console ports patched to support 4k but not give true 4k.

When PC games adapt true 4k with a lot of titles it will be because consoles are out that run 4k games. Because lets face it, the biggest PC games that arent mmo's are usually cross platform. Sure PC has a lot of great games only on PC but they are few and far between, the majority of them are little indie games, shovelware and console ports.

Its those pc master race guys though that make me embarassed to say I have a good pc and I like playing games on it.
