Looks like 4K gaming will start to happen sooner than I thought (on PC ofcourse)

2014? So by 2016 it should be to the point where PC users get about 12 games a year that use 4k with half of those being console ports patched to support 4k but not give true 4k.

When PC games adapt true 4k with a lot of titles it will be because consoles are out that run 4k games. Because lets face it, the biggest PC games that arent mmo's are usually cross platform. Sure PC has a lot of great games only on PC but they are few and far between, the majority of them are little indie games, shovelware and console ports.

Gargus

So.... you don't understand how resolution options work.

Probably 30+ inches 4K panel I would imagine. 27" would be too small even for 2-4 feet away.

Who said anything about a PS4? Can a PS4 game at 4K? Can it run photoshop, premier and Visual Studio?  Jeebus.

Kinthalis

There was a mote of sarcasm in my post there :P Also 27" is too small for 2-4 feet away? Nah....

I've got a 27 inch monitor at 1440p and it's a bit smallish. In games it's great. The detial is amazing, but on desktop duty I need to scale things up a bit sometimes, or move the monitor closer than my preferred 4 feet or so.

So I guess 4K would be fine, But I'd need to scale up my desktop.

27" @ 4K would give you max almost 2', and a 46" would give you max around 3'.

4k on a 27" screen is completely pointless as a PC Monitor, u need 37-40" to tell the difference at that seating distance.

Don't waste your money, buy a 27" 1440p instead.

It's slightly faster than a Titan. It's very good considering how cheap it is, but it's not the first card that allows 4K gaming possible. 4K gaming has been possible for many years, as long as you put enough powerful components into your rig. Compared to 4K, I'm much more interested in seeing where Oculus Rift will go.

I'm going to wait on 4k until a 120hz one is available for a reasonable price. 4K gaming is definitely the future though. Consoles are barely catching up to 1080P, that's actually pretty sad if you think about it.

Well to be fair, you get what you pay for.

Can't wait to see GTA V like this.

Just because 1080p is the most commom resolution doesn't mean that most gamers arent using resolutions below 1080p.

i dunno man. isn't 4k, 4x more rendering work than 1080p60, but 1080p120 would only be 2x the rendering work? I already feel like i get a lot of pixels, but i want more frames. i think 120fps lcd would be so much more awesome than my jittery slow 60fps plasma :(

Nice.

I'd be very happy to have 1080p/60fps min avg./Crysis 3 Ultra w/ a decent 8-16x non FXAA AA.

These faster cards and h/w upgrade pacing would make PC plebs like me get a cheap card that does why I want soon.

Maybe a $ 299.99 gpu in 2 years?

Good point. If Laptops are included in the poll, then the rendering resolution average will skew towards lower resolutions because resolutions on laptops are typically lower than on monitors/plasmas/projectors/lcdtv/toilet

sure it'll be here soon but its still in its infancy, untested, higher latency and not to mention the capacity to do it will cost an arm and a leg so only like around 1% are going to do it. Personally right now we are fine with what we have and should be chasing better AI and other things before resolution jumps in gaming but i probably are in the minority.

Yes,that's why people are trying to claim ownage with the steam polls. But they do include laptops,so tons of people install Steam on their crappy laptop, average gets lowered.

lol 4k is pointless unless it's being displayed on a massive TV that could really use the extra resolution. Pixel density(aka PPI) is the more important number than just the total resolution itself when it comes to monitors. Once a monitor has a large enough pixel density, it's going to be hard for the human eye to really notice much of a difference when you make the density even larger. For sub-30" desktop displays, 4k is always going to be a waste of money IMO(obviously until it becomes the industry standard and you can get them dirt cheap). Hell, my computer monitor is 37" and it still looks great in 1080p. How much detail is 4k really going to add? It really doesn't bring much to the table unless you have super vision or some s***, and if it's 4 times the resolution then it's going to take 4 times the processing power(or 1/4th of the frames Per Second) all for such a minor upgrade(unless you're playing on a huge TV)

Um, what's your point? It wouldn't be an "average" if it included only people playing on $1000 gaming desktops. lol Do you not understand the concept of a poll? No matter what you say, the majority of PC gamers play at resolutions lower than 1080p. Doesn't matter if they're on a desktop or not. Also most laptops have either an HDMI out, VGA out, or DVI out so they could easily hook their laptop up to a better monitor to play games if they wanted to.

m3boarder32 and his alts end up ruining every discussion. He is like a system wars virus. I'm surprised he hasn't said " his" plasma will make ps3 games look better than any PC 4K game because "resolution is only the 4th most important factor in image quality." He already claimed "his" Plasma/PS3 beats my 1440p/GTX 690

Honest question: Wouldn't the moniter/TV have to be 37" minimum to tell the difference?Spartan070

While that is dependant on distasnce from screen, yes, it does have to be fairly big to tell the difference between say 1600p and 4k at a reasonable distance in games. That said, the difference between 1080 and 4k should be apparant even on much smaller screens than that.

I'd rather play Super Mario Bros. 3 on a vintage TV set than play current gen games on a 4K display. I don't care at all about graphics, I want good games. And this is a cop out for developers to make pretty graphics instead of solid gameplay.

Resolution =/= Better Graphics.

If anything it just makes the picture clearer or just makes the picture bigger.

This is by far the stupidest response I've ever read. Higher resolution supports better graphics, it's a no brainer. Nobody needs 4K resolution to play 16 bit games.
