I doubt FF will be crushed by Lost Oddyssey, at least in sales. In terms of scores, it's possible, but the last Mistwalker game (Blue Dragon) was an uninspired game with boring characters, visuals and story. Everything I've seen of Lost Odyssey reminds me of Final Fantasy around FF VIII era, which is fine, but the xbox isn't really targeted at JRPG fans. The combat seems really slow-paced, but the visuals look nice.

Lost Odyssey may not look as pretty as FF13, but the premise is a thousand times more interesting, especially if you're not some kid who just staretd playing games.synce

"a thousand times more interesting"

How so?

i'm actually curious to know why? i've been trying to find this info i read on the game recently that made it sounds kinda cool not sure if it was LO tbh.

I don't think FFXIII or Lost Odyssey will be AAA titles.

No, LO is not a FF killer, because FF killed itself.

I highly, highly disagree with you. FF12 was one of the best in the series, FF13 will be AAA greatness and you can quote me on that.

Although this is a matter of personal opinon, I disagree with your statement that FF XII was the best in the series. Let's look at the points of the game, just on the gameplay side. Graphically, it was obviously the best in the series but I've learned that graphics do little to make a game fun.

-Combat system, while innovative, was fairly bland. The player only had a limited amount of control over the actions of the characters, so to some extent it was distancing the player from the game and reducing his interactivity. This would have been fine if it expanded on the strategic elements of the combat, but it didn't really do that. All it did was reduce player input in favour of automation, which is a negative when I want to PLAY a game. I frankly never understood why they used MMORPGs as inspiration for the combat system, since the only reason MMO games are like that in terms of combat is because of lag and the difficulties associated with implementing a less timer-centric combat system.

-The story was interesting, but it was by no means the best in the series. In terms of story, FF VII, FF VI, FF X all definitely beat it, and in my personal opinion so did the stories of FF IV, FF VIII and FF IX.

-The sidequests were somewhat limited to hunting monsters, which while reasonably fun, is a definite cop-out. The kind of fetch quests and 'go kill this monster' quests that abounded in this gameare shallow and lack complexity and immersion. Again, its evident that there was MMO influence here, but the benefit of a single player experience is supposed to be the increased complexity and depth of the quests you embark on.

I do believe that the FF series is still the best series around as far as JRPGs go, but I think the games aren't quite as good as they once were. Still solid AAA material though.

As for Lost Odyssey, that game looks like a big step backwards as far as JRPGs go, to the slow-paced turn-based combat that only existed in the first place because of limited machine horsepower. Graphically it looks stunning, which is nice but does not a good game make, and the story seems to have potential. If i were to throw out a total guess at this game's eventual score, I'd say 8.5, and for FF XIII, i'd say either 9.0 or maybe, if they do a really good job, 9.5.

wow..someone making sense on system wars for a change.

Dude just to let you know the team who did 12 we're really divided and the direcotr left earlier on. the producer admits the story didnt live up to prior ff stories. There were many many things they wanted to implement but just couldnt agree.

note: "Katou:So you're saying, that anything outside of Cocoon is considered Pulse? Is it dangerous to go outside?
Toriyama: That is correct. That is how the inhabitants of Cocoon percieve the outside world.

"Yes, there are. Those who've been influenced by the "outsiders" are quarantined by the "Holy Government". The ones in shackles and wearing prison uniformers seen in the trailer are the ones currently being deported."

religious dystopia? note the word "deported" kinda makes me think of somewhere like north korea; the desire by the government to bleach out all external influence.

another quote: "Who is Mr. "33 cm"?**

Toriyama: The game's story isn't about a party of people banding together to save the world, so in that sense we don't know if he's an ally or an enemy. (Lightning seems to dislike him, too?)"

in the newest FF13 trailer shown in the closed mega theatre We see Mr 33 cm(his tagline for now, apparently he's humourous and his name has something to do with that) helping out "the lightning" by summoning Shivas ( now a duo of sisters). Apparently the characters will have relationships with the summons now.

"the lightning" gets summoned by the crystal in Pulse and told to destroy cocoon. What's weird is she's a citizen of Cocoon. The two yellow stripes on her arm denote her social ranking. Cocoon apparently creates all life within it? or it could make people believe that? why would cocoon create the lightning just for her to destroy it?

the concept of ff13 is "those who go against the world". And lighting is feared to "destroy mankind"i reckon "the lightning" will destroy both pulse and cocoon

"What has been revealed of her mission (given to her by the crystals) is the destruction of the floating city Coccoon and to make the world hers" wiki

i dunno ff13 sounds more interesting than Lost odyssey to me. i like the fact there's such room forcharacterization in Lost odyssey, but i don't trust sakaguchi to deliver something really immersive.i have a feeling a lot of the characters will end up being cliched. Why on earth are 2 children playable? i'm guessing they'll be the stock anime, chirpy, spunkychildren who never give up.

There's a possibility LO will have decent characterization, but judging from what i've seen it feels very empty and bland

Except the majority of the team they got to do 12 have nothing to do with 13.

I agree with you, I loved the latest FF, but it doesn't guarantee 13 will be a winner.

Lemmings are hyping the Final Fantasy killer 7.0-7.5... Yep...makes alot of sense. One question for the lemmings: Do you still think Lost odyssey is the FF killer??redandblack23

I just checked Gamerankings and Eternal Sonata is getting solid AA ratings.

Square Enix makes both games. And Lost Odessy will go on both systems. Hell the PS3 fans are gonna buy both FFXII and Lost Odyssey! I'm one of em!
