I know that final fantasy XII isn't a next gen game like Lost Odyssey but these are the two RPG's I am considering playing though. I just finished Mass Effect and need another RPG. I have a PS3 to play FFXII and 360 to play LO. Which is a better game and which should I get?

Oooh, a hard one. FF12 sucked, but so did the commercial for Lost Odyssey, only because of the Feed your Head song. Go with LO, just because I haven't played it.

I haven't played Lost Odyssey due to the lack of a 360 but from what i hear it is good but not great, where as i have played FXII which you will definately love. It is pretty, the story is great and the real time battle is works well

I'd say Lost Odyssey is the better game by miles, it offers a great set of characters, a better storyline than FFXII, a better combat system in my opinion even though it is the traditional turn based combat, its challenging and fun, better enviroments and 4 discs packed with content.

While FFXII offers the direct oposite to all of that.. Lets see we've got the dull unintresting characters like the useless Vaan and Penelo who play hardly any role in the main plot even though Vaan is the main character :|, then we've got the combat system which basically requires you to set up a macro for each of your characters called gambits and basically just sit there and watch you characters play the game for you much like an MMORPG. And then you've got the really dull looking maze like enviroments and it's really short and on 1 disc.

If I was in charge I'd swap the scores with FFXII and make it a 7.5 and make LO a 9.0 which is clearly deserves.

looks like LO is favored, and I was leaning towards FFXII too. I know LO has a better story but which is longer and which has a better combat system. Do random encounters in LO get annoying? How does each play? How are the cities?

if your a final fantasy fan then play lost odesey, FF12 is probaly the worst FF out of all the FF games on the PS1/PS2 (proper FF games not the cheap cashin games :) )

lost odesey plays like a FF game should.

LO is the mean and superior kid who beat up FFXII and took its lunch money. FFXII was a subpar FF game, while LO was far more like the older and much superior FF games.

alright thanks. Your help is much appreciated. I don't think I like random encounters very much but I do like traditional turn based combat. Story is also a huge part for me. Its what made Mass Effect amazing IMO. I'll be picking either one up tomorrow so any more recommendations would be great

You are in no way required to use the gambit system. If you so choose you can play out each attack instead of setting up gambits. Does it really matter if you preselect what your charcters will do prior to each battle. It's not like you can use the same gambits for every battle situation. Did you really find it that disappointing everytime you didn't have to press the lil button to pick your attack?

Just play both of them, theres no better opinion than your own. But I guarantee you will play them both and think Lost Odyssey is the better game much like everyone who has played FFXII and LO. This thread will only get raided by FF fanboys, there the majority obviously but FF12 is one of those games that sold off it's name alone. While it is good it's nothing amazing.

I didn't like Final Fantasy XII personally. I couldn't finish it. It depends though if you want a fully traditional RPG (LO) or a bit of a variation (FF). I'd try Lost Odyssey though, personally.

depends on the type of gamer.

But seeing as it's an RPG you'd usually play mostly for a great compelling storyline. Although I'm willing to say LO has both great gameplay and a great storyline.

  1. This is what everybody says in defense of FF12, but in reality, the game has its own secret gambit system. Press attack once without the gambit system, and you just keep attacking, taking away control. And the game outright says it in the intro/tutorial.
  2. Yes, it does. If Gradius came out and the game moved and shot on its own, your only responsibility being the choice of what powerup you get on the bottom cycle thing, every hardcore shooter fan would be pissed and wonder what the hell Konami was thinking. Why the hell is Square-Enix allowed to get away with that exact same crap in their biggest series?
  3. Yes, you can. I have done it for most of the game, very minor changes notwithstanding :|.
  4. Yes, I did! What the hell's the point of playing the game if its gonna play itself? And it has cutscenes that put Metal Gear Solid 2 in a favorable light. At least in Sons of Liberty, I was actually playing the game, rather than watching the game play itself out to tell its own story for me. I only tolerate Gambit-system-esque battle systems in older RPG's, where they're just called Auto, you can't program them to your liking, and using them in boss battles (and sometimes random battles) is idiotic and a very quick way to waste your MP and die.

The shmup analogy is actually poor. A shump is really all about the movement, the dexterity of the player. There are large portions of (most) RPG titles where all you need to do is select attack endlessly. He's basically saying what's the difference between it being auto selected or you pressing a button to select it each redundant time.

Further more this style of gameplay is quite similar to some WRPG, such as Kotor. So I really don't see why SE should be put down for such a choice. :?

I'd say get both. I haven't had the opportunity to play Lost Odyssey, but people that have played it have said great things about it. I'm really itching to play the game, and can only wait till I finally buy a 360.

FFXII is a great game too; this one I have played. Some people despise it, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I felt the story lacked focus on the characters, which a character driven story is what I like so this was really my only valid complaint. Gameplay, however, was great, loved the Gambit system, and yeah. Good game. :)

Here are the game ranking scores:

Lost Odyssey: 79%

FF XII: 91%

So reviewers generally consider FF XII to be the better game, but you have to take into account that the standards are raised for next-gen games like LO.

This is an interesting question, especially because as I have been playing LO, it has made me reflect on FF12.

When I played FF12, I thought it was pretty good, but I never completely got into the new system. It still had a lot of the addictive qualities of older FF games, with its grid system of licenses and what not.

Now that I am finishing up LO, I have come to truly appreciate FF12. LO is really the missing single player FF11. It feels dated, and sometimes, playing it can be a (bit) of a chore. Now, in retrospect, I can see why the changes were made to 12. They had to move on somewhere. This feeling maybe just the result of a lot of time spent with JRPG's, but I was glad to see some evolution in 12, and I have come to respect it more, now that I have seen what FF would be like without growth. (LO)

To be fair, though, LO has an excellent story (if a little slow in getting started) and it is beautiful to look at.

Both games are worth your time, but if you can only play one, I would recomend FF12.

Well it being better is subjective some people do prefer it, I don't see what's so funny.

As for innovative. It is in terms of JRPG, and last I checked the gambit system is pretty unique (something I found overly interesting seeing as how it reminds me of coding).

They are both great games so you can't go wrong if you like loooong games. Of course FFXII is $45 dollars cheaper if money is any factor. I don't know why people hate on the gambit system in FFXII I thought it was great once you tweak it properly to suit your style of gameplay. LO has a much more traditional combat system but is still loads of fun.

Even though you all gave me answer this is what I wanted to hear. I've been hearing it everywhere except in this thread

I played both games for an extensive period of time, but stopped Final Fantasy after about 60 hours when I realized I didn't care for the story or any(!) of the characters. Both games have good battle systems and both games are nice to look at. If you're looking for a story, though, or nice Dungeons, go with LO.

-RPGamer-

But in boss battles, you can't just attack endlessly, you need to form a strategy. And the analogy was meant to point out that the game takes away the gameplay and justifies it by calling the old system "repetitive". And I haven't played WRPG's, so you can't blame me for attacking Square Enix for it and indirectly not insulting western developers. I'd play them, but I'm old school and can't find many WRPG's for consoles.

alright thanks. Your help is much appreciated. I don't think I like random encounters very much but I do like traditional turn based combat. Story is also a huge part for me. Its what made Mass Effect amazing IMO. I'll be picking either one up tomorrow so any more recommendations would be greatEcho13791

Take it from someone who beat Mass Effect 4 times, LO was way better.. FFXII is a joke compared to LO. If you loved FFX, you'll love LO.

What if I loved old school JRPG's? Would you still reccomend it?
