Low settings vs consoles - which looks better?

All I can say is that as a casual gamer I am quite satisfied with my PS3 and Xbox 360's performance, it outputs 720p with a mostly consistent 30fps and looks great too. I haven't been able to compare it with any PC so I would like to know how multiplatform games look on PCs when played on low settings. Do they look as good as games do on the Xbox or PS3? Does it matter whether you have a high end new graphics card or do all GPUs output look about the same when set on low settings?

I don't think I could actually make my computer run a game as low as the consoles do.

from what ive seem most times they are the same on low.

Sometimes it is a bit better low on PC than console on games like BF3. But for the most part they are the same.

Agree, but i'm too satisifed with my ps3. The worst thing is i'm using my PC for work and to stream music to the ps3 lately, although i was a big supporter of the m/k over the controller !

But why gimp the PC?

Consoles basically are low and medium settings and 720p (many times sub 720p). At this point anything but intel integrated graphics can do that easily. Integrated graphics will still have alot of issues running certain newer games at all (not talking AMD's APU's which are at least able to play games, and at least start stepping up the settings to at least make HTPC gaming decent).

Obviously the point of a gaming PC would be to play on high or ultra settings and 1080p or higher.

Always depends on the game. Something like an MMO, for example, looks terrible on low, because it's designed to run on the largest number of systems possible.

Consoles are perfetly fine for graphics and resolution, the PC fanboys (Hermits) just overexaggerate things.

I'll contribute something serious to this thread. I game on an almost 4 year old laptop, that just barely meets minimum system requirements for most of the big games from the last couple years. I also game on my roommate's PS3, and do a lot of direct comparisons, as we've got a lot of the same games. In my experience, it really varies from game to game. Usually the console versions look about the same as the PC version, on medium/low, at 720p, but with some slightly better effects than the PC versions gets at less than high settings. I haven't played the PS3 version of Far Cry 3, but here's a handful of my screenshots from the PC version. This is at a mixture of mostly medium settings, with high textures, and low post fx, low ambience, 720p, plus 2xMSAA. Runs on my laptop at 30-40 fps on average, with highs in the 50s, and a minimum of 25, but it only gets that low at a couple weird spots in a few cutscenes. So, allegedly, it's running considerably smoother than the console versions, and looks like this.

It's lovely, watching you squirm! The initial image was taken at 1080p from the YT resolution options, made fullscreen (on my 1080p computer/screen) and screencapped, uploaded and shown here. 1080p image from open to close.

The Crysis picture had a highest resolution option from YT of 360p... Blown up to 1080p on my computer (the way I took the image) for your viewing pleasure.

Barring the compression, it isn't far from the product (played the 360 version). It's still quite a ways from representative of the screen quality, though.

The first image I showed was a 1080p feed, taken at 1080p and shown here as 1080p. The video you put forth.

The Crysis shot had a resolution of 360p for the video, at the highest... Are you saying that Crysis played at 360p? That's the only way for your argument to work.
