Is there really that much of a lack of support for MAC gaming? I know that STEAM is available. Thinking of grading my computer and want a MAC.

Tell if these Specs are good.

27 inch monitor

I5 Processor 3.60 GHZ

1 Terabyte HDD

8 GB RAM

5760 ATI graphics card 512mb.

Never have too much RAM. Mind buying me some, since you have the extra money.

That's going to be too slow for games. Get a Mac Pro w/ 5870 1GB video card and install Windows 7. A 5770 will be okay if you plan on playing on lower resolutions, but definately not 2560x1440.

sorry but if money is not a concern then you could be buying a better pc for less money. the dell U2711 is the same panel as the ACD 27" and is considerably cheaper to boot

Blizzard supports MAC too, also now that the MAC app store launched there's been games from 2K like Borderlands and Bioshock.

Left 4 Dead 2

World of Goo

Torchlight

Penumbra

Amnesia: The Dark Descent

Eschalon Book's 1 and 2

Counter Strike Source

Sam and Max

Heroes of Newerth

Battle for Wesnoth (free)

Din's Curse

Diablo II

World of Warcraft (not a fan but a few million are)

If money is no concern then you should definitely get a PC, I don't see why you'd limit yourself to a Mac for gaming.

Install windows 7. But that GPU won't be able to drive 2560x1440 in most games, so you'll need to run in a window.

Macs are PCs. You can Install Windows on them. You can get an emulator for the old games too, Windows even needs this.

The two remaining PC juggernauts support Mac now (Blizzard and Valve), but allot of the smaller studios do not.

But with steam now on Macs the number of big games will likely increase now.

Yeah never get it just for gaming, but for anything else, Macs are better. They are a bit more expensive, but the build quality (esp the laptops) are much better then what you are likely comparing them to.

wow. i will agree with the laptops but mac pro/imac build quality is supbar compared to a good pc. why bother paying a premium (and I mean premium, RAM costs 5x more at least) when the PC can do everything a mac can, only better?

1. "better" is subjective, explain
2. "a bit more expensive" on average twice the price as a windows PC or laptop with equal or greater power
3. Asus, Toshiba, and Sony all have lower failure rates/hardware issues than Apple.

Less. I named good games from memory that were on both operating systems. 'PC' includes Windows, Mac and Linux by the way.

The two remaining PC juggernauts support Mac now (Blizzard and Valve), but allot of the smaller studios do not.

dercoo

Wrong, a lot of indie developers support Mac and Linux because of how much the mainstream industry neglects them. Look at Spiderweb software who develops and releases games on a Mac first and ports them over the Windows first. The guy has been in business for well over 15 years by tapping into a market and the indie market followed suite (he is basically the father of what we now call indie btw).

Blizzard and Valve are just intelligent and see the market where EA or Activision (not the Blizzard half obviously) don't.

Mac pros have a good build quality.

And you are wrong about PC's can do everything better than a mac. Audio Editing, software synthesizers work better on a mac, video edititing, mac servers are better then windows ones (though Linux is better than both). Working with OSX on anything is so much quicker than windows 7 and earlier.

It doesnt. a mac IS a PC, windows is non the wiser. You need different drivers just to make the track pad to work, but thats about it.

Actually it's so easy to install the drivers since they come with the Mac for free on two DVDs. After Windows installation, just put in the DVD and it installs all the drivers quickly and easily.

I own a macbook pro and I love playing L4D2 and Portal on it but my fiance's Sony lap top that was half the price of my Mac plays the exact same games much better than my Mac does. I HATE windows, but if you wanna do tons of gaming that's what you'll have to live with.

and what you get away with just saying it is so?

logic pro - cubase, reason

final cut - vegas

servers - pay $600 for the MAC OSX Server when you could just get bsd/linux. windows is better because it can run exchange... good for businesses

quicker - nope. why not add a SSD to your mac... oh... wait...

I went onto the Apple USA website and priced that computer, it came to $2,099...

So he would get:

Intel i5 (dual core @ 3.6ghz model unspecified) CPU

ATI HD5670 512MB GDDR3 GPU

8GB DDR3 1333mhz RAM

1TB HDD 7,200RPM

... This is not a $2.1k gaming computer in the least bit.

Yeh, I doubt it'll be a gaming machine. TC, if you want a gaming PC which will be your main system get something else however if you want a powerful multimedia computer go with the Apple.

wrong... wrong... wrong... wrong... wrong... wrong

Sorry, you need more than that. Take us through it or step aside.

and what you get away with just saying it is so?

logic pro - cubase, reason

final cut - vegas

servers - pay $600 for the MAC OSX Server when you could just get bsd/linux. windows is better because it can run exchange... good for businesses

quicker - nope. why not add a SSD to your mac... oh... wait...

err... Cubase and Reason are can be installed on Mac. Logic is exclusive.

Is Vegas better than final cut?

I already stated that linux is better than both. You don't need Exchange if you arnt using windows. A mac server has the equivilant.

And ah... yeah, why not add a SSD? or buy a mac that already has one?

the point was there is no reason to spend double just to get an exclusive program. these aren't games.

vegas is more or less the same as final cut. they both have their pros and cons. once again, no reason to spend double on a mac

i said windows was better simply because linux/bsd have webservers covered, and windows can run exchange. i have not encountered a business that ran whatever the mac equivalent is. how come i can sign into my exchange account on my iphone...? where is the mac equivalent?

if you buy a mac that has an ssd they will overcharge you. macosx is not inherently faster than windows 7. marketing ****

Wait... you said there was a problem with SSD on macs..., that is isn't quicker? You just fell back to the overpriced arguement? listen WE KNOW. we are talking about PERFORMANCE in things other than games here. Price isnt an issue if you are buying a mac.

Its not just exclusive software. Midi latancy is MUCH better on a mac, out of the box. Stock windows drivers are not useable. Custom ones are still lagging behind.

I use a mac because i want a mac. If i want a pc then I will just get a pc. There's really no reason to spend more on a computer if you don't need a mac. My work just got us a couple of 12 cores mac pros with 24gb of ram for over 10 grands a piece excluding softwares. Not for us to put windows on it so we can play crysis on max, but so that i can have more little squares chewing the rendering scene in my picture viewer. I know a lot of studios prefer to use PCs for their stuff but i'd rather shoot myself if i ever have to work on a pc.
