Major Xbox 360 E3 disappointments

Let's be real for a moment. While it managed to get FF13, Xbox 360 has a lot of No's that will damage its long-term competitiveness.

1) No Blu-ray. In no way, shape or form does getting FF13 make up for lacking Blu-ray support. Blu-ray prices for players and movies are coming down. You can bet HD TVs and Blu-ray will become more and more mainstream, and Xbox 360 can't hold a candle in this trend.

2) No official RROD fix. Xbo 360 is still the most unreliable console ever made. Check the Xbox 360 forum here at Gamespot. There is a sticky thread just for disappointed 360 owners who experienced RROD and other issues. This thread will be stickied longer than any news coming out of E3, including FF13 news.

3) No Final Fantasy 13 Versus. Final Fantasy's home is still on the Playstation family. Tradition matters. Final Fantasy Versus matters. If you like FF13, you have the option to experience more goodness with Versus. It's a full game, too., not an add-on. Only on the PS3.

4) No game whatsoever can claim any of the following: Best technologies (MGS4). Best graphics(Killzone 2, MGS4, Uncharted, GT5p). Best sound (MGS4). Largest games(MGS4, Resistance 2, Killzone 2). Largest multi-players (Resistance2 and M.A.G.). Best animation(Uncharted, Killzone 2). Best photorealism (GT5p). Best cut-scenes (MGS4). In other words, the best aspects of gaming are only found on the PS3.

5) No free LIVE. PSN is getting better and better all the time. Real close to LIVE now with 2.41 update. Trophies looks to be better than Achievements with its visual and RPG nature. HOME is coming soon. It's looking better and better. Microsoft can fight, cry, lie, or beg all it wants, but Xbox 360 is still the worst console for casuals. Paying monthly fees to play online games??? This is not in the DNA of a casual gamer. Period.

6) No indications that it will win Sony in the world-wide install base. This Don Mattrick guy is supposed toreplace Peter More. It's a bad start for his reputation when he claims the 360 will beat Sony world wide. Did anyone notice that Microsoft kept the same price for the 360 but increase the drive space by 40 gigs? Sony just did the same.Thus the trend of the PS3 beating the 360 in sales should continue each month. Especially since Sony seems to have better exclusives coming in 2008 and 2009.

7) No freedom to: install a hard disk drive from any supplier at a lower price, install Linux, and to watch downloaded movies ouside of your home, away from your console.

8 ) No M.A.G. or exclusive MMOs. Unfortunately for the 360, the PS3 has MAG and DC Universe Online (not to mention the games by NcSoft). Sony will claim the multiplayer crown this generation.

Sorry I had to highlight though I couldn't help myself, this is damage control and MS definitely had just as good a conference as Sony (imo it was far better, but to say it was disappointing and Sony's was better need very special prescription fanboy goggles).

Your only valid point. But I think most people would agree that Blu-Ray is the #1 bullet point for the PS3.

RROD is a hardware failure issue. It will never go away. All hardware has defective units made. The issue is what percentage. Microsoft has long since addressed reducing that percentage with numerous hardware changes and even offering a 3 year warranty. They had a problem and dealt with it properly.

3) No Final Fantasy 13 Versus. Final Fantasy's home is still on the Playstation family. Tradition matters. Final Fantasy Versus matters. If you like FF13, you have the option to experience more goodness with Versus. It's a full game, too., not an add-on. Only on the PS3.

This would be an issue if FFXIII was the only rpg or jrpg on the 360. We've got this and tons of other titles. Star Ocean 4 more than makes up for not getting a spin-off.

LOL @ that list being dominated by 1 game. Cows get mad at the whole "only 1 good game" joke but then they make list like this.

Like everything Sony does, only god know when Home will release. I hate the free live argument. Lets just say that the 360 sells for $399 and includes two free years of Live. For people who got a 40gb HDD, they're gonna need another HDD really soon if they buy the best games on the system or Sony franchises (GT5P, Devil May Cry, GTA4, MGS4). I wonder how much LBP, Resistance 2, Killzone 2, RE5, FFXIII (both games), M.A.G., etc will take up. Lets make the 360 the price of that and then we'll say it comes with 4 free years of Live.

It will win worldwide install base solely from Blu-Ray. Eventually there will be a time where you have to ask why PS3 games don't sell like 360 and Wii games. Cows always say, "because 360 came out first". Well, until time travel is invented, this will never cease to be the case. And of course, the Wii doesn't count so thats how they explain why the Wii outsells them.

LMAO, freedom to install. LOL, the 360 could stream all your music and video from your PC from day one (since its already online and connected to your network, why waste the space having two copies of everything? I've got a 20gb (came with 14gb free) 360 and i'm only using 3gb of it. I've got nine games (4 of them would require an install on PS3 near 20 gigs total) and DLC and Demos. You don't need an extra HDD with the 360. There are no mandatory 5gb game installs to eat up disk space. I will never have to wait more than 30 seconds if I want to replay a game. Not only will a PS3 owner have to wait, he'll have to decide what game he doesn't want to play any more and he'll have to delete that game install... or drop $100 on a HDD.

LIVE is only slightly better now. The basics of multiplayer are about even now. Sure Xbox 360 has better extra features. Sony has extra features, too. Get your head out of fanboy dirt and read some reviews. IGN seems to prefer Trophies over achievements. Don't forgot PSN also has better browser, Youtube, and codec support.

Resistance 2 looks to teach the Gears developer what it means to be epic and huge multiplayer goodness. Little Big Planet seems to ignite interests in the hardcore as well as the casuals. There is no denying it: the PS3 is getting very good games.

A price drop for the PS3 is like killing 2 birds with one stone: you get a cheaper console and a cheaper Blu-ray player. Consoles are for gaming only is a statement made by people who don't know what its like to enjoy the multimedia benefits of the PS3. To deny the PS3's media capabilites is like a blind man saying color isn't important.

First of all, MGS4 is an awesome game, and in my opinion the best looking game out right now, but is it a big jump over any other game? No. Did the 90 million gigs of uncompressed audio that Kojima threw onto that blu-ray disc make that big of a difference? No; lossless compressed audio would've worked almost as well, and would have taken up a tiny fraction of the space. And for my money, MGS4 still isn't the best game this gen, so it's all kind of a moot point. Let's face it: I bought a PS3 to have a blu-ray player, and I'm really happy with my decision, but the BD-Rom drive hasn't exactly been blowing gamers away in terms of usefulness; if anything, the PS3 has benefitted more from the standard HDD than the BD drive (load times on games have decreased due to install, not due to the somewhat sluggish read speed of the BD drive). Blu-ray is a great technology, but it's still not being impactfully utilized in games.

Live is still better, period. No one's complaining about PSN being free; it's a great deal. But XBL still has more developer support, is unified, and has much more content to offer. I appreciate dedicated servers, but I appreciate all of what XBL offers more. And trophies vs. achievements...Who cares? Neither one matters enough to me that I'd choose one or the other as the basis for which service to use. XBL is still stronger at the moment, so that's the one I'll take.

Cows continue to flaunt Sony's 2008 lineup, but it hasn't really been the impressive, all things considered; with the exception of MGS4, most of the biggest PS3 games are being pushed back to 2009 again and again. And Resistance 2 vs. Gears 2? I'm sorry, but based on the first games in those two (possible) series, I'd say Gears 2 wins, hands down. Resistance was one of the first games I bought for my PS3, and I stopped playing it within a week; there was plenty of good stuff going on in the game (weapons and setting were cool, for example), but the game was repetitive and not particularly inspired. The only thing it really had going for it was the fact that it supports 32 players online, which is admittedly pretty sweet. But then again, if I really cared about playing with that many other people, I'd probably do more gaming with the PC, as they've always got the edge on that. What I really care about is that Gears was a great game, and Gears online was one of the more unique shooter experiences that I've had in a while; it's not about it being 4 on 4, it's about how the game works online. And it works fantastically. Gears 2 looks to up the ante, so as long as Resistance 2 isn't supporting 500 vs. 500 multiplayer, I'm not impressed.

Finally, large online multiplayer is being claimed by the PS3? Since when? Just because Gears doesn't do huge numbers of players? The 360 already has FFXI, so it beat the PS3 to the MMO crown by years, and there's plenty more on the way. And for those of us who don't just play online, the 360 also happens to have beefed up it's street cred by landing a tiny game known as FFXIII, making it look more and more likely like MS will surprisingly own the JRPG king of consoles for this gen. Nothing at E3 was a big news as that, and it's just another piece of evidence that the 360 is still gaining momentum and support from devs, which to those of us who just care about games, is very important.

Says who? The same people that said FF13 was exclusive to Sony? lol, you cows have way too much faith in Sony lately. It's obvious Square favors MS by a LOT. Maybe you missed the part where X360 has all the excusives and the ones they don't are timed (from Square). The only day/date multiplat PS3 gets now from Square is FF13.....which used to be exclusive to Sony so that is a loss as well.

Face it, versus is going to be multiplat. Just start getting used to the idea. Even if Square said it was still Sony exclusive, that means absoultely NOTHING.

What happens when BR players get cheaper than the PS3 with better features? For better than 75% of the market, being able to play movies in 1080p isn't even an issue...they don't have the tech to be able to even use it.

The year of the PS3 was supposed to be in 2006 when they launched the "3x as powerful as 360". Then it was supposed to be 2007 when devs "got the hang" of the PS3, then it was 2008 because all the big titles were coming(which almost all of them have been pushed out in the undetermined future). Sony has been making promises and failing for 13 years. The PS1 was supposed to be the most powerful machine, the PS2 was supposed to be the most powerful machine, and now the PS3 was supposed to be. The software has NEVER bore any of that out. When will cows learn to not believe the crap that sony spews?

Oh, believe me. I am actually not disappointed. Microsoft has shown nothing that it will win this console war. The biggest, most advanced, and innovative gamers are on the PS3. No the 360. To me, this E3 is a disappointment for Microsoft and its fans. This E3 shows that the 360 is really aging, incapable of games like MGS4, Killzone2, Resistance 2(for FPS multiplayer), and especially M.A.G. I am sure Cell plays a big role in big multiplayer games.

man this thread is sad. I bought the ps3 for rpgs. Where are my rpgs? Why would i play ff13 and ff13 vs and white knight story when i have ff13 and like 5 different rpgs to play. Im very close to getting a 360 and just selling my ps3. I'll probably just go over to my cousin's to play ff13vs. Anyway, the maximum im waiting is till TGS. If there is nothing that wows me. It's over for me and the ps3. I'm just telling it like it is.

For ppl who like killzone and all that. They will have an amazing experience on the ps3. Don't flame, i just like my rpgs. Peace.

Not just MAG, but ESPECIALLY MAG? LOL! What part of the MAG demo did you find most impressive? The lack of an actual game, no release date (probably within months of the end of gen), or the promises that are sure to be broken like every other Sony claim? You can also choose all of the above!

1) Not really needed.... Digital Download... Netflix partnership.

2) The majority of owners have never had it. 15% of people experienced it. Jasper update will fix. No need for and offical thing. 3yr warrenty for all console bought from time of purchase.

Marvel Online got canceled (sadly, I was looking very forward to this as I am a huge Marvel fan). APB looks sick, as does Huxley. Also 360 is getting Age of Conan (as far as I know still) as well, so I wouldn't say they have no MMOs on the 360. Plus we also have PSU and FFXI (both of which are also on PC and PS2).

instead f Marvels MMO 360 is getting champions online so it's not that big a loss :)

Being made a fool? To me being a fool is to be unable to give credits where credits are due. I give credits the 360 for having a slightly better online experience. But for $50 dollars a year. Now to me, those who deny the obvious and refuse to give credits where credits are due are the foolish ones here. How can you deny the benefits of the PS3? Remember, the benefits of the PS3 in the console war, not just about you or anti-PS3 fanboys.

The guy who wrote in red spend a bit of time responding to my thread, but he seems too unreasonble for me to want to respond.

For example:

Blu-ray. How can he deny that if there is space for devs to use and devs do use them, how can it not be an asset? It's not an asset when devs don't use it.

LIVE vs. PSN. How can anyone deny that it's a lot closer now between the two? How can you not see that Trophies is better than achievements? How can you not see the benefits of PSN's dedicated servers? What use if LIVE it can't let you play larger FPS multiplayer games like Resistance 2 and MAG?

Don't confuse "I" to equal most gamers!!! You may buy consoles to play games only. Most will buy consoles to play games and watch Blu-ray movies if that console allow them to do so for free. More HDTVs=more demand for blu-ray players= more demand for PS3. Think before you start calling people fools.

Well people was saying MAG was going to come out at the end of the PS3 life cycle so I would assume by this time frame that would be inaccurate wouldn't you think lol. Also the dev said their playing to developing time has shifted to playing more lol. But for something that big late 09 or early 10 is fine for me especially with Zipper creating it and plus all the other games coming out.

I'll say the 360 has a better library. Not by much at at all. Bioshock, Eternal Sonata, and other former exclusives are coming to the PS3 anyways. This year, the PS3 has GT5p which sold millions already, MGS4, Bioshock, Resistance 2, Little Big Planet. These are just the bigger exclusive games. Every exclusive on the 360 has flopped so far. Gears 2 still has to prove iself. One thing's for sure, Gears 2 will not enjoy the graphics advantages over other games like the first one did. At this point in time, it looks like Resistance 2 will kick the crap out of Gears 2 in "epicness" and multiplayer. But we will see.

The thing is fanboys refuse to accept non-fanboy reviews that say this game or that game can only be done on the PS3. Gamepot itself said MGS4 is the most advanced game ever made. If a reputable reviewer said this game or that can only be done on a console, that console is always the PS3. But 360 fanboys refuse to believe. This kind of denial borderlines delusions.

No srsly, Fable 2 release month, Fallout 3 exclusive DLC, RE 5 release date and co-op announced, South Park/Portal exclusive XBLA games, new dashborad look, FF13 and some more Square Enix JRPG info. Pretty good...

The main thing I was sad from MS is no worth while new IPs were announced, it was just more information on games we already knew were coming. Also no new HDD with cheaper price or a price cut on them to support Netflex was stupid.

The list is making 360 be like PS3, and I rather keep the two consoles different. The thing I like Sony doing is showing us things we haven't seen on games we knew was coming out such as Resistance 2 and iNFAMOUS. Overall though, this E3 was lacking in any new big game to hype that wasn't 3rd party (like Mirror's Edge)
