Let's have a little history lesson, shall we?

Super Mario Bros. - 40.24 million sold

That's more than both Halos combined times two!

Super Mario Bros. 2 - 7.46 million sold

More than Halo CE

Super Mario Bros. 3 - 17.28 million sold

More than both Halos combined.

Super Mario Land - 18.14 million sold

More than both Halos combined

Super Mario Land 2 - 11.18 million sold

More than either Halo

Super Mario World - 20.61 million sold

More than both Halos combined

Super Mario All-Stars - 10.55 million sold

More than either Halo

Super Mario 64 - 11.89 million sold

More than either Halo

New Super Mario Bros. - 9.77 million sold

More than either Halo

StephensAngel

Too bad I don't live in the 80's anymore and Nintendo ruled everything. Maybe you should warp into 2007.

Um, dude. they pretty much are ruling everything now.....Granted there is more competition than there was in the NES days, but they are pretty much king of the hill nowadays...

firest of all, Mario is for jst about all audiences because it is rated T

most people who own a Wii are under seventeen and will buy Mario Galaxy

XBOX360 is geared towards older, cooler players who are smart and like a bit of complexity in their games, or just fun blood and guts

You can't say the same for Halo 3 either. Halo 2 only managed to get to 30% of Xboxes.

Haha no, fanboy.

The "cool and smart" people like shipping their console away to repairs after a couple of years?

Yes because it's been 10 year old's who have waited outside store's for shipment's to get their hand's on a Wii, PLEASE, I would say the nearly the entire Wii's demographic at the moment has been +18.

Hard to say at this stage. Halo 3 has something like 4 and a half million pre-orders, do we have pre-order figures for SMG?

In Japan though, Halo 3 will be as chaff before a hurricane.

*Applause* I mean if anyone can be this illogical, they deserve an applause. BTW, you do realize that there was very little competition back then, right? It was Sega and Nintendo and they both sold like 60 million NES or more. Lets say Nintendo sells 60 million, that means 1/6th of owners bought a game, right? Ok, now lets say that Halo 2 sold about 8 million, I think. 18 million systems were sold, that makes for an average of about 1 in every 2 people who owned an Xbox bought the game. See where there is a logic flaw?

I would count the 3d marios separate from the 2d ones, since they are very different. So this is actually the 3rd mario game in over 10 years. That's hardly tired. If anything there isn't enough mario games :o

that actually goes more of the other way around. Some kids with 360's will not be allowed to buy Halo 3, as it is M.

Super Mario Galaxy, is part of a huge franchise, with a huge fanbase, on a greatly popular console. And it will likely be rated E10+ or T.

ANd some people might only see Halo 3 as a game that is only good for its online multiplayer, and if they dont have XBL, they might not think its worth it.

Super Mario Sunshine - 5.91 million copies

Considered the biggest disappointment in the Mario Franchise and still came within a half million of Halo CE

49erfanatic

But it still didn't outsell it. Considering this is the only 3-D Super Mario platformer that came out during Halo's time this is the only one we can assume Galaxy will sell like, and this game didn't outsell Halo. If you want to say Galaxy will destroy Halo 3 in sales, be my guest. Just remember that sales point otherwise.

Actually, there were about 7.5 million copies of Halo 2 sold, and 6 million of Sunshine. The Xbox had 24 million sales and Gamecube had 21 million sales. So the attachment rate is nearly the same.

It might have a chance I guess but I wouldn't bet on it and besides many old games sold alot cause they cost like $5. But NSMB sure does bring some hope. But one thing for certain Galaxy won't DESTORY Halo 3 in sales.

Your logic fails only because most of the games you just quoted existed back when there were no other consoles out there that really competed with Nintendo. And as for the DS, there's crap load of them out there so there should be that many sold at least (I being an owner of one of the 9.77 mil sold). :)

You only seem to include the games decades old or the handhelds... if we think logically here, the last two console games didn't "DESTROY" any sales at all. Mario 64 sold more than Halo, but didn't "DESTROY" anything. It also had the advantage of being revolutionary as the first proper 3D platformer. Mario Sunshine failed quite awfully because it was just Mario 64 with improved graphics. I dont see how Galaxy is going to U-turn the series.

Bad thread.

Good thing it delivered on thehype. What a great game.

I almost fell out of my chair at the theater when they played SMB3 in the "finals" in that movie. I remember we left the theater and went to Toys R Us to preorder...and the name list was already 500 names deep. Madness.

Their is more competition now. The old Mario's had it to themselves and for the DS Mario well look at the hardware sales. Mario Galaxies will sell great and so wont Halo 3 but if I could only get one game well that would easily go to Halo 3.

BTW I own both Wii and 360.

Did you see the gameplay video? Galaxy is nothing like Sunshine, and now the Wii has a larger userbase and this game has casual and hardcore appeal.

People used to buy systems for Mario games...that is not the case anymore. They(Nintendo systems) are now bought for cheap motion sensing thrills brought to life by mindless minigames. white_sox

The only games that can rival Halo 3 in sales are Super Mario Galaxy (a system seller and it appeals to casuals) and GTA4 (same).

The only 3D Mario game to come out in the last 10 years sold less than both Halo games.

Don't get too far ahead of yourself. This isn't the 90s anymore. Mario doesn't dominate consoles like he used to.

Mario Sunshine left a bad taste in most gamers' mouths. It sold the worst of most Mario platformers. It has been 5 years since a console Mario platformer.A DS Mario platformer came out not too long ago. I don't think the hype is there for Super Mario Galaxy. It will sell well, but it won't beat Halo 3 in sales. Now SSBB might...

why is it impossible for the wii to over take 360 in overall sales this year?

mecause the 360 has already sold over 12 million to the wii's 6 million. the wii has production problems. they produce less than 1 million a month.the wii remains sold out because of the production problems. the wii might be able to get to 12 million by the end of the year, but by then the 360 will be well over 12 million. the wii will sell the same amount of units in december they do this month, they can only sell what they produce. the 360 gowever will probably sell well over 4 million in december alone if the expected price cut happens. i expect the 360 to have 20 million consoles by years end, about twice as many as the wii will have. the 360 will have stock to supply the christmas shopping season and the wii wont. the christmas shopping season is 1/2 of total anual sales. i'm sure there will be some announcments at e3 that will help you understand. supply is as important as demand. it dosn't matter what the demand is if you cant supply it, all you can do is raise the price untill it reduces demand for max profit. the ps3 has the opposite problem. they have the supply but no demand, and are looking into a price cut to increase demand to find a balance point and minimise losses on sonys part. selling a console for half price is better than not selling the console at all. a 50% loss is better than a 100% loss. micrisoft has demand and supply. demand lately has been falling off. the big titles this year will increase demand as will christmas. add in a price cut where the core is as cheap as the wii or even cheaper and demand goes thru the roof. and then they sell the excess supply that is currently building up. ms produces over 2 mill a month. ms will dominate christmas with a price cut, which will give them the highest sales of the year.

Rofl. I can't believe these sheep are bleeting over their console turning into degenerative ultra-casual gamer trash. Show me there is a good story in Mario besides doing the same crap with Bowser or saving someone. Atleast Halo's story is so deep it spanded an ARG and now getting its comic book going 10,000 years back in time.

If Mario Galaxy does destroy Halo 3 in sales, it's because mommys didn't let their kid pick up Halo. Nothing to be proud of. A better game to say would be Brawl because with "animated violence" no matter how little I know there are some prickly moms out there that just wont allow even "animated violence" in their households. But hiding behind the parent trap is something the Wii fanboys have been becoming adept at.

Nintendo has been selling roughly a million a month, starting in December. That's 13 million. And, they're ramping up production. They sold 5.84 million by the end of March (in 4.5 months).

[QUOTE="Ontain"]

[QUOTE="blacktorn"]It's impossible for the Wii system to take over 360 sales this year, that automatically makes it impossible for Mario galaxy to sell more than halo 3.blacktorn

why is it impossible for the wii to over take 360 in overall sales this year?

Because they can't manufacture enough maybe?

They're dishing out 1.5 million Wiis a month. I'd say that's sufficient.
