Mario is the most overrated franchise!!!

Mario, a simple Italian plumber, has redefined the following:

1.) Controls in a 2d platformer (Super Mario Bros, NES).

2.) Defined the NES and its controller (Super Mario Bros, NES).

3.) Redefined platforming for a new era (Super Mario Galaxy, Wii)

4.) Single handedly saved arcade machines (Donkey Kong Arcade)

5.) Defined how platforming should be done in a 3d space (Super Mario 64, N64)

6.) Defined Kart racing. (Super Mario Kart, SNES)

7.) Created the first expansive, secret riddled epic platformer and one of the greatest games of all time (Super Mario 3, NES)

These aren't even all of them. Mario's success is deserved.

I'm going to stop you right there.

Super Mario 64 made a successful transition from 2D to 3D (something that Sonic still hasn't been able to do) and defined how platformers would work in 3D. Super Mario Sunshine, introduced the water cannon thing and is currently AAA on Gamerankings. NSMB created an interesting fusion of 2D and 3D and was the first sidescrolling Mario game in years. SMG is the highest rated game this gen and won GOTY from a number of sites, including this one.

I also can't believe you mentioned Mario and Sonic, that's not even part of the main series.

Super Mario RPG, Paper Mario, Yoshi's Island, Mario 64, GALAXY, Superstar Saga, all junk?

If anything, it's the one franchise most deserving of the acclaim.

Mario success doesn't even come remotely close to Pokémon. Now that's a phenomenon.

It has almost surpassed the Mario franchise in sales, despite not coming close in quantity (amount of games) and the first Pokémon release was like 15 years after the Mario debut.
