What does bad character designs have to do with fragility? Is that what they tell themselves after they get sent to the unemployment line? 🤣

@elderlord99: Really? It seems like there's people who get upset whenever anything diverges from it.
Game developers and game journalists along with activist.
Most consumers hate modern western aesthetics.
This is a lie... I like to have this chart because it's a mix of the Japanese and Western aesthetic, showing that they're not much different. I suppose I could add Overwatch and Fortnite to the list...
I could probably guess which characters are from the west with 95% accuracy.
Then guess. Red for West and Blue for East.
Don't worry. I'll patiently wait as you reverse image search. 😉

I almost forgot to mention that NetEase Games knows what their target audience really want out of character designs and it's no wonder why Concord failed to understanding that having fun and cool characters can bring in joy from most audience:
I didn't care much from any of the F4 cast but seeing them now, they made them look way cooler than the upcoming new F4 film that's coming soon. Invisible Woman is THICC👌
You say as you simply show an attractive woman in a skin tight suit...
I'd argue otherwise. Most of the gamers complaining don't really want cool and unique designs, or unique art styles. They simply want an attractive woman in a skimpy outfit. Which isn't that creative.
We want them to actually look like comic book super heroes?? In a Marvel super hero game??
It's not just the chick characters but the male ones too! Absolutely shredded, I want the heroes to look like gods and goddesses.
Why tf not!
It's fanasty, it's art, you can make them look anyway you want in art!! Why not make them look amazing!! Why make them look average and boring?? What's the fun in that shit!! I see average boring people every day! I'm trying to be a god damn super hero running through walls and jumping 50 feet in the air, make it look as over the top and badass as possible!!
*Rivals vs Avengers for context*
Posting more because it's so friggin bad. Why is China making our super heroes look so much better than we can!!
Like damn this is our culture our heroes, and China is winning with our own damn franchises.. meanwhile western studios making marvel avengers and suicide squad and getting absolutely waxed because it looks like shit and plays like shit.
We can't let China win guys, demand better...

I intentionally hand pick these to throw people off. I pick some that fit the stereotype and some that break it. I picked the Aphrodite and Nu Wa from Smite, because Aphrodite is very sexualized and Nu Wa is from Chinese mythology. I also did Ying and Io from Paladins because they're Asian characters and attractive. I picked Tiffany from Friday the 13th because she has a very sexualized bikini skin. Also, she has narrow eyes. She's a white girl, but she looks a bit similar to the main character in Stellar Blade.
I picked Dulia Chai from Final Fantasy 14 because she's overweight. People associate that with the West. I also picked Poison because she's muscular, though people correctly guess that she's Eastern. Maybe her face gives it away? I don't know.
I also pick some that are played straight though. Attractive women for Eastern designs, and some muscular women for Western designs.
Then guess. Red for West and Blue for East.

Wow!
That ass is phat!
@sargentd: those comparisons are so dumb. There's nothing wrong with either character design.
!!!
One on the right looks like a souless NPC from a Bethesda game just waiting for that VAT kill to happen_
The one on the left looks like an absolute chad. It's not even the models design overall (though the left is far more dynamic). Model posturing does a lot to sell a vibe.

The posturing helps...but let's not kid ourselves.. if the one on the right was standing the exact same position it still looks like shit lol.. I could kick that dudes ass and haven't been to the gym in over a year lol
Lets talk about the outfits, the attention to detail.. the one on the right looks like really bad cosplay.. your right it looks like a grunt npc.. somebody you would sell your inventory junk too in an elder scrolls game.. so lazy... it's a disgrace to let a chineese developer punk us this bad.
if we are going to make America great again we gotta demand better...
I am not happy about this.
I admit this is not my genre (not a fan of Overwatch) and I like classes over "heroes", but I just didn't see the appeal. Sorry, not trying to crap on this game or anything, but speaking as objectively as possible I don't see how it excels in any particular way.
Seems like another microtransaction vehicle, though it does seem to be a fairly generous one (plus it is free).
Anyway, I would not hype the success too much; Marvel is a license to print money and be popular, and you don't even have to make a superior product (just good enough).
Rivals seems like it is "good enough".
Happy for folks that are enjoying it, though 👍😊And I did like the whole synergy aspect where different heroes could combine their powers, that was kind of neat.
It shows that well established IPs with a solid game is a winner. Nothing more.
Pretty much.
While I don't wish for any game to fail, I fear a lot of folks in marketing and such will see this success and we will see even more clones, more crappy hero shooters.
They should look this game's success as an exception, not the rule. I think it is important to see how many games of this vein have been attempted in the last five years and how many have failed.
We've got, what? Overwatch, Rivals, and Valorant? Maybe R6 Siege counts too?
I never pay MTX in these games, don't care about skins/cosmetics, I just like to play.
Try it Bojangles, it's free. The appeal is pretty straight forward.
I know you've played wow, ya know how WOWs pvp is shit. Imagine if it wasn't shit. You got something close to rivals. You got characters that have chain heals and ranged damage (ele/resto shaman) you got guys with big shields, , high health, crowd control, (protection warrior/feral druid) you got assasin Melle types (rouges/hunters)
This game also introduces team up abilities as well, so if you have for example thor and captain america together, captain will get an electric damage bonus on his shield, or if you have Spiderman and venom on a team together Spiderman with get an extra move where he dot damages people within range around him with a symbiote suit move.
Some characters are beat em up guys, you got shooting guys, spell caster guys, sneaky butt stab guys, its a great mix, then put em all on a 6v6 mp map and see which team comes out on top.
You might like it 👍

Everyone hates the culture war bullshit, but I do think their is a solid argument that many Western designs are just dogshit.
Part of that I think, is having technology to create realism, where they are more interested in trying to make it look like live actors than a cartoon.
Basically, tossing aside the fantastical element so they can show off their pixel perfect facial hair nobody actually gives a shit about, and looks worse.

Good point, it does come across as they are trying more to look like Hollywood actors in cosplay than comic book heroes.
I dont think that is what the player base is asking for.. so they should probably stop doing that if they are trying to sell video games.
Why do we need realism in a super hero/comic game. There is nothing realistic about super heroes so I wish they would stop doing this.
This isn't culture war stuff. People will try to make it that, but it's just comparing bad aesthetics/art style to good ones.. and it's being reflected it which games sell and gain traction and those who fail and fall apart. (Of course there is more to it than just aesthetics, game has to play well, but just saying it's important and I'm tired of seeing people pretend it's not)

I think both approaches to art direction have a time and place, but I do agree that some developers tend to either aim for realism or try to be too humble in their design at times.
In bad situations, what you end up with is a want for classic "dudebro" or female equivalent design--big muscled men in unrealistic armor, women in skintight "armor" with boobs and ass highlighted--but a perceived need to be humble or restrained or meet an agenda, and you get this ugly design where you can tell they're holding themselves back.
It's why I always argue for creative art direction over technological prowess, especially since we are seeing such a diminishing return on visuals as hardware demands increase as we get closer and closer to photorealism.

The issue seems to be the more realistic looking a game is, the more dull it is. Even Marvel Rivals vs Marvel Avengers is about how Marvel Rivals feels like something out of a comic books, while Marvel Avengers is more realistic but dull. Which, gamers shot themselves in the foot with this one. During the Xbox 360 and PS3 era, I talked about how dull the games looked. That gray, brown, and gloomy era was something... Though when I pointed out how dull they looked, people just said "Nintendrone talking about graphics! LMFAO!"
That's why I laugh. For some reason, y'all care NOW. A lot of the big Western devs and ugly AF art for decades now. Though y'all just ate Doritos, drank Mountain Dew, and played Call of Duty and liked how dull it looked. Y'all didn't even care for indie games, because the game wasn't "realistic enough like COD". Now y'all are whining about the dull art style. 🙄
@elderlord99: "The fat girl with the cat ears is a minor NPC from an MMO.... in the West she could be the main character of an action game."
Come on bud. There is no AAA western action game with a main character anywhere close to that fat. There have been a few hero shooters with a couple overweight characters, but that's also true with Japanese fighting games.
Correct me if I'm wrong here. And if you post Aloy, I will respond with a "laughing in your face" meme of some kind.

Fat Princess was a thing, but that was released in 2009, when the anti-woke claim that Western developers were still good. Even then, most people who are more knowledgeable about the game than I am, say that the game was basically mocking fat people.
Though other than that, I can't recall an example. Western games with plus sized women are Overwatch and Paladins. Mei from Overwatch and Betty La Bomba from Paladins.
Mei tows the line. Mei is chubby, but she's still considered attractive by the player base and people who are fans of Overwatch because of *those* videos.
Betty La Bomba, is bigger than Mei. Though she's not as big as the FF14 NPC.

I don't think that's the problem.
As far as western games looking dull and boring in the 2006 to 2012 era I think alot of that had to do with UE3.
One of the things I love about Japanese devs is they generally do a very good job at having a consistent look for their character. Even going from PS2 to PS5 the characters look how you imagine they should with more realistic visuals.

Is that Dustborn? Is that really what you're going with as an example of a AAA action game? Is that even AAA, or action for that matter?
But okay, putting that aside, I see three skinny people and one overweight one in a game that apparently has five main characters. Do you even play as all of them? I don't know much about this game.

No it wouldn't be considered triple A as it was a small dev team funded by the government. However if this were to do well it would have been the standard for the next decade.
@elderlord99: Trish and Lady got a pretty substantial boob reduction between DMC 4 and 5.
Also, that face:
Some of faces look off during certain facial expressions but overall the characters look great. It's still a pretty significant step up front most modern western designs.

So, like I said, there really hasn't been a western AAA action game where the main character is fat chick. People act like it happens all the time, but it's really just a buncha Youtuber hyperbole getting into the heads of Interneters.
