"I completed the single player game on a combination of Normal and Hard difficulty at character level 42 in a little over 23 hours. I'd imagine folks could possibly blow through the single player story in 12 to 15 hours if they avoided all the side missions, but they would miss out an enormous amount of entertaining material. For those who are wondering about the possible trilogy aspect, be assured that you will receive a clear, decisive ending to this portion of the tale. It's extremely satisfying and still does a great job of setting up a sequel."

Ohh oh....the EPIC game....story can be beaten in 12-15 hours...that's not good imo.

I expected the game to be at least 25 hours for the main story, like BioWares other RPG's

WHAT IS WRONG W/ NEXT GEN GAMES?

COD4 - 6 hours

GeOW - 6 hours

HS - 6 hours

Lair - lol 0 hours, nobody should play it

This is dissapointing...this game just went from a MUST OWN...to RENT status for me :(

I expected 40 hours to be honest.

Sigh... I just hope Resident Evil 5 ends up being as long as 4.

It all depends. I want my rpgs to be long, atleast 25+ hours. I don't know what category this game falls under though. All other type of genres I'd be happy with 12-15 hours without side missions.

If you blow through the game, I don't blow through RPGs, I take my time and do side quests to enjoy it.

Since Mass Effect is the type of game where you'll want to play it multiple times I can't see this being anything but a must buy.

... Sad. RPGs should be 2 to 3 times that at minimum. This generation makes me really sad because of the lack of length in games.

the time seems to vary. Co-worker of mine drove to Winchester to get it and said it lasted some 30 hours with no side missions. Another thread on the internet said some 20 hours but the guy admitted that he had missed out on maybe 20 more hours of gameplay. Then this guy with 23 hours, but saying if you are gonna rush through it 15 hours.

If its an amazing game, I wont mind the length one bit, and there is tons of side quests. I remember in Oblivion the main quest only took me about 20 hours but I played the game for 112 hours, and that was doing all the guilds, caverns, finding Daedra armour.

So basically I'm not worried, it sounds fun finding uncharted planets.

It's actually not all that much shorter then Jade Empire, a little longer actually. However, it seems from the review most people will take 20+ hours to finish it. For true RPG fans like myself it looks like there's a good 30 hours in there not counting the replay value for alternate storylines and endings.

If anyone is blowing through the game in 12 hours and only touching on the parts they absolutely have to I'd say they've missed the point of games like this altogether in the first place.

It's sad when looking back.

Resident Evil 4 was at least 24+ hours.

Okami was 40+ hours.

Ninja Guiden and Devil My Cry 3 where both longer than 18 hours.

Honestly, an greatRPG that is 25 hours long fails in comparison to an RPG that is 100+ hours long, like Oblivion or even the craptastic Final Fantasy 12.

it was the same way with oblivion yet people still played it for hundreds of hours. Thing is all the side quests take longer to complete than the main story.

Game completion times are all relative. I've heard that a game has a completion times of 10-15 hours, yet I've blown through in 4. It all depends on your playstyle and perspective. With RPGs, I go all out in terms of reaping every little bit of exploration and depth as possible. With KOTOR, ES3, ES4 and Baldur's Gate I've easily logged more than one hundred hours in each. I generally could have blown through the main quest in under 20, but I chose to get the full experience. That's likely what I'll do with Mass Effect, and I expect nothing short of 70 hours if Bioware is to be believed (which they most certinly are:))

Yes But Side-Missions aren't relevant to the story...and this is an RPG (Role-Playing Game)....and BioWare has always been great w/ delivering a solid single player experience (NWN, Baldur's Gate) and then adding sidequests that add on to the game.

Wtf is fun about playing a game strictly to beat it in one going?serious stuff...i tried rushing through guitar hero but that didnt last long because rushing through it isnt fun...rush through bioshockwasnt fun..it got boring..id rather go to places the storyline wouldnt normally take me...if i was playing mass effect i would spend most my time supe-ing up my character...it took me months to beat oblivion..when the average person could just rush through it and beat it in X amount of hours

no, for players like us compare this game to oblivion. You could beat it in 20 hours, but thats no fun. The way things are going, its going to take me 60-70 hours.

Say what?

I easily clocked 140+ hours on Oblivion just by doing the standard things in an RPG, such as leveling up, collecting loot, doing side missions and what not.

If I had bothered to explore all of it, 200+ hours righ there.

Never beat oblivion, or gta. The reason why those games were so fun were because of the crazy level system those games had. All I did was get my alchemy, strength, up to 99. I could care less about the story, and sidequests.

Actually in Mass Effect it is, like the character Rex for instance, he has his own story and bringing him along with you or ignoring him could mean missing out on a huge part of the story.

True. KOTOR was a good length for a game and if they are about the same I will be satisfied.

And about Oblivion... I clocked about 120+ hours and beat every quest in the game save some random misc. quests.

Well I don't skip everything. I do go back and beat just about everything there is to beat... I just do it all in as few sittings as possible because I am a video game addict. For me they should make a game that automatically turns itself off when you play for too long, tells you to go outside, never lets you skip the cutscenes, and extremely challenging so I don't master the game half way through and dominate the last half. (Mario Galaxies in the platform elements, Zelda's puzzles, and my character in Oblivion was just way too powerful.)

Skipping side quests was like using the world warps in the Mario Bros. games... you aren't getting the whole game experience if you skip them.

It took me about 20 hours and thats, after completing most of the side quests except pod racing and the horrible card game. I did play through the game 4 times though.

Anyway, i dont see where the problem lies here, the link clearly says 12-15 without completing any side quests or any additional exploration.I dont know about anyone else, but I can see myself spending hours upon hours exploring the 250 different celestial bodies(Planets, comets,Gas giants included)

Look, I'm a sheep and PREYING for this game to flop. 8.9 COMEON!!

But I can't abide hating on a game with a 10plus hour single player campaign not including side missions. This isn't a JRPG, and that is a decent chunk of time, not including you can probably squeeze about 30 hours out of a 10 hour game if you play it right.

You know these type of games don't have much replay value, so forget that before you go in. It'll probably be just about as long as KOTOR was and that was one of my favorite games of all time, and I hate WRPGs, mostly.

So, from me, a sheep, find another angle to flame this game, please.

I've seen Super Metroid beaten in under a half-hour. It isn't a half-hour long game.

If you're going to speed-run and trim out everything good about the game, then you can do that, but that's not representative of the game's length on the average first playthrough. As others have mentioned, Oblivion isn't that long if you only do the main quest, but there's so much else to do that only doing the main quest would be stupid.
