I beg to differ. Even though it had some great first party titles, they were few and far between and many (but not all) multiplats were better on the other platforms and the GC even missed out completely on a lot of them.

I think that both the Wii and the GC have/had similar standards.

Blade8Aus

Beg away Rebel Strike, RE Remakes, RE4, F Zero GX, Metroid Prime, Wind Waker and more were all among the top of the league for last gen standards. Wii's only real head turner is SMG, its standards just aren't anywahere near as high as the Cube's wow factor was. At least the Cube actually got some of the big multiplats. The Gamecube was excellent for its time and I'm proud to have had one.

Same! Those are great games indeed. But it depended too much on them. PS2 and Xbox gamers largely ignored the console completely because they just saw it as the 'cheap' console. The multiplat titles often weren't the best because of the controls either, even though the controller was fantastic when the games were designed with it in mind.

The Wii has more than just Mario, but like the GC, I feel as if it's mostly just first party titles with a few other exclusives here and there that make it great.

My point is that even though there was a lot of Gamecube owners, such as you and I, that were very happy with their purchases, the Gamecube was, to a lot of people, the cheap console that was selling badly for a reason. It just didn't have the games that most people wanted to play.

Also, I do believe that we're getting a bit off the subject of the OP here.

It did have the games but the fruity looking purple lunchbox and candy controller didn't do a lot of good for its image. In my opinion the Wii has got it the other way around this time, in my opinion :) Topic related post: This should have been an easy victory for Prime IMO

I say there's something fishy with the large number of Metroid Prime votes. I mean the game is fantastic, but I doubt half of System Wars actually owned a GameCube and Metroid Prime. The game didn't sell as well as it should have. I guess some people just hate HL2 and what it represents so much that they are ready to vote for a game they'd probably get tired of after a few hours because of it's slow pace and lack of action.

Metroid Prime for me

Half Life 2 was very cool, fun and visually stunning, but the atmostphere of Tallon IV drew me in much more than City 17, Ravenholm and the other locales of Half Life 2. The gameplay for both is equally fun, but something about Metroid Prime's atmospheric music while reading the data logs with it's nostalgic info and/or deeper insight into the story of the Space Pirates really got me more into the feel of Samus Aran and the world she explores.

Its not as if SW represents the average gamer. Most people here are fairly devoted to the hobby. Its not far fetched at all to believe the ones voting for Prime did in fact play the game and enjoy it. And if you read through this thread you will see more than enough posts to support that. I could understand if the majority of the thread was nothing but praise for HL2 and you have a bunch of silent voters for Prime, but that is not the case at all.

Metroid Prime was one of the best if not the best 2D to 3D conversion. It's a great game, but in my opinionHalf-Life 2 is clearly the best FPS and my favorite out of these two.

There's an easy way to determine which one's best and that's the replayability. Metroid Prime is great the first time you play it, but after that it becomes boring. I tried to play it again several times after I first finished it and I just couldn't. On the other side I've played through HL2 quite a few times and it doesn't get boring. With the only exception of Ravenholm. I hate that level.

I think they are both good. I can't really say which is better, however, because they are really tottaly different games. Sure, they both control from a FPS perspective, but they are very different gameplay wise.

Eh, thats pretty subjective. For you personally, sure that is a good way to look at it. But in terms of replayability I would rather play through Prime again.

And if replayability is how we determine a better game then games like SMB3, SMW, NGB, MGS2 and 3, and pretty much every game with a good multiplayer component are the best lol. :P

Nothing fishy about it, several years ago I did a best of the decade rundown polls, Metroid Prime won the entire thing.

And there's a section of people who actually hate Metroid Prime (God knows why), so both have the love and hate aspect.

Agreed, Metroid Prime didn't sell as well as it should have, but it still sold well, and I'm sure people who had the game passed it to friends to play.

If anything, it is more fishy as to why Half Life 2 is winning. If you went throught this thread without seeing the pole, just seeing the comments, replaced HL2 with game A and Metroid with game B, you would say, LOL Game B is owning Game A. So many more people are saying Prime, Yet HL2 is winning. It is obvious why, Half Life 2 has an online brigade that fixes poles across the internet. Yes, yes...that is why :P

Hmm...that's a cruel desicion to force me to make. I love both games and can still go back and play them to this day. I guess I would have to give the nod to HL2...but it's a narrow margin.

Metroid Prime, no questions asked. Half-Life 2 is a good game, but it can't compare to the moody, beautifully-designed gem that was Retro's debut release. No way. Metroid Prime remains a compelling experience because above all else the player's interaction with the world is what's focused on, no extra fluff (which the later sequels unfortunately embraced). No way, Metroid Prime is a fine, fine game. Definitely the better between the two.

For me the opposite is true, actually. I played through Half-Life 2 once, and then I played through Episode 1 and 2 once. That was it, I didn't need to go back. With Prime I replayed the game a few times. I can't remember exactly, but I would wager I did five or so playthroughs in the past 8 or so years that it's been available.

EDIT- My apologies, I actually beat Half-Life 2 twice. Once in 2004 on PC, and once in 2007 on Xbox 360 through the Orange Box. So I guess I did replay both, just moreso for MP. :P

Agreed. Metroid Prime gets better with each playthrough, each time you see more and more of the little details that Retro added to this Masterpiece.

HL2 is playable a couple times but seems to lose its replayability after that. But its another Masterpiece IMO.

Terrible thought, because Replayability is just as subjective. Neither game is replay friendly. Half Life 2 is far too long winded, scripted, and padded to be replayable to me for instance. I absolutely can not stand the chore that is every mission Ravenholm, and the game isn't mechanically satisfying enough to hold its weight. Prime is Prime. A great experience, a grand experience. Like you said though doesn't lend itself to replaying very nicely. I tend need months or even a year before I can replay it again.

Metroid Prime. HL2 has a great first impression, but beyond that its a very standard shooter. The pacing and gunplay made the SP feel like older shooters where saving and loading at the right time was key to success.:P

I couldn't decide easily. But then I thought, wait MP is a good Action Adventure and HL2 is just a decent shooter. So that broke my indecision.

[QUOTE="daveg1"]is this a joke?? one of the best games of all time against a game i struggled to even get into LOL!!! you kids have been spoiled with newer games but forget hl2 is where mostly all of the stuff you see today in games is thanks to hl2!gillri

errm Metroid Prime scored higherthan HL2across the board for a reason

scoffing at a comparison like you are are doing is moronic,

its very close IMO but the unique atmosphere of MP makes that my choice

Half Life 2 is STILL the better game....
