Hes just flame baiting.. that statement can never be true.. how many people do you know still play PGR or Halo 2 online? Not a lot.. but you know many people that still replay classic titles like Silent Hill 2, Final Fantasy X, Kingdom Hearts 2, Super Mario 64, Shenmue 2, Marvel Vs Capcom 2.. the list goes on. And games with great single player will always be great no matter how many years pass by.
Games that focus on online mp.. eventually just fade out over time. Just check whats going to happen to the Resistance 1 servers after Resistance 2 comes out.. it'll be a ghost town.

It is mediocre.

I've just seen movies which blow MGS's story out of the water. MGS isnt anything special. And i find the way it tells it's story through long cutscenes to be stupid. I bought a video game, not a movie. Video games need to find a way to tell their story without borrowing from other mediums if they ever want to be considered art.

About MGS4's long cutscenes. People just can't accept the fact that not all games focuse on the same things. MGS4 makes a difference, appreciate it. In case you don't like a story based games, FORGET THE GAME. In my opinion the story in a game gives me a HUGE motivation to play the game, as for MGS4 it made me feel the same hatred against enemies as Snake felt. That's what really made the game atmosphere HIGH.

Not agreing with either side but...

my first play through on MGS4 (watching cutscenes) 9hours+(on Naked Normal)

second play through on easy (watching about %20 of the cut-scenes) just shy of 5 hours

third time I played through on hard (skiped all the cut-scenes) tried to unlock big boss mask (didn't because I had to continue) rush through took me 5hours.

So, if it really took you guys 10+ hours to beat then you guys might be a little slow...(for those that don't know, at the end of the game after Snake talks to Otocon, they show you how long you were playing and the ranks you've unlocked. That's how I know how long it took me.)

On GeoW I play through the first time on Co-op (normal, because hardcore doesn't become unlocked until you beat it one time through) and it took us 6 hours to beat...

You cant rate Gears with regards to MGS4. their worlds apart in design and gameplay. the only reviews that should be based on other games are when they are a sequel to a game, like Spiderman 2 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Spiderman by comparison.

MGS4 is a 10 because it sets the standard for storytelling and is a graphical wonder.

Gears gets a 9-9.5 because it boasts a gorgeous physics engine with intense blood and gore, as well as brought out the best in multiplayer shooters (before COD4)

I think that we are being unfair here.

MGS4 is completely different when comparing it to pretty much any other game. Not only do they differ in gameplay, story, graphic **** etc., but they're impossible to compare without beng at least a little subjective.

MGS4, just like the whole MGS series, is KNOWN and LOVED for its story and storytelling, its characters, its themes, heck, you can watch someone play the game and you'd be entertained.

Gears of War, however, is KNOWN and LOVED for its gore, its over the top gameplay, its multiplayer, and Hollywood-esque themes and characters.

I think that we shouldn't rate them and compare them while doing so, since you can't say which ones better, they didn't even come out the same year, we should just say and conclude that both are revolutionary must-haves for the console they're in, and everyone's praise should be directed their way.

Why not compare Gears 2 with MGS4? Since they came out in the same year.

Ive only played 2-3 hours of the gears 2 coop at my friends (he got it yesterday).

Id give MGS4 a 9.5/10 and Gears2 a 9.2/10.

I havnt played the gears 2 online though (besides horde mode), so i cant really speak on that. Although i hated Gears 1 versus mode.

Gears of war 2 = Better graphics, Gameplay and sound editing

MGS4 = Story, characters, atmosphere and fun factor

I personally think gears has a slight edge in online aswell, although im not fan of either MGS4 online or Gears1 versus mode.

So as of right nwo i think MGS4 is the better game, but that might change after i give gears 2 a fair shot online.

The cutscenes in MGS4 were horrid. Every 10 minutes a new cutscene...

Storytelling that did nothing for gaming itself because it just emulated movies.

Gameplay was good, ill give it that. Not ten worthy because it didn't do anything new. It was as solid as Gear's.

Well i can see why you can have so much pleasure in making love to a girl in your dreams. you've lost all sense of reality, MGS4 is by far one of the better games made this year that desrved an AAA ranking.

This is rediculous, they're both great games, but this is a terrible comparision. The true comparison that needs to be made is SSBB vs MGS4 vs Halo 3

Still i see no reason to hate a game like you seem to.

Because i really dislike the story and how it's told through cutscenes (badly directed ones) and how it's told in the way that everything is, like another user said, transparent. It could also really use an editor. It's over the top, silly and convoluted. I can't even take it seriously like the makers probably want me to. Kojima tries to make me care for the characters, but i really don't because they are silly pathetic sop stories. It's like he is trying way to hard.

I cared more about the characters and story in MGS3. I loved the story in MGS3. It felt more natural and les corny.

But people still praise MGS4 as if nothing will ever surpass it.

Like i said, gameplay is solid. but i dont think it's worthy of a ten. OoT did because of what it did for the genre. I didn't see anything in MGS4 that was ground breaking. Maybe im missing something.

I think MGS4 is better than any GOW.
I was a nintendo fanboy who hated Sony. I played Gears and it was cool

I play MGS4..... I was blown away from beginning to end. Cut scenes are not annoying to me and people who say

that there are more cut scenes than gameplay must have no counting skills. MGS4 Beats any game ive played

Both are awesome. Alot of people claim these games are overated with weak gameplay. Apparently people need to be re-educated on what equates to "average gameplay", I sugest you pick up a copy of Turning Point to see what I mean, if you can bear it.

GeoW is one of the most atmospheric games ever created to date, a fantastic score and impressive post disater graphics, what more could you want, except for great gameplay, which gears also posseses. People seem to belive Gears is all about jumping behind cover and blind firing. To the people who say that I recommend attempting to mix up your play style a bit more before you go critising something for lacking variety. Shotgun to the face is more effective in most cases anyway, just be careful. It has as much variety as most of the best shooters out there, and if you don't like shooters, then why are you playing them?

MGS 4 is incredible for fans of the MGS series. A great, although somewhat flawed, conclusion to the Metal Gear Solid series (Hopefully). The story is a bit akward in places, but if you're a fan of the series you can get over it, and getting past that it is incredibly entertaining. Gameplay is pretty good aswell, when you consider how many options you're given to deal with a situation. You can shoot your way through the game, but why bother? The warzone's were a great adition to the gameplay, adding a much needed variety to the sneaking situations you encountered through out the series. They even let you do some of the dirty work your self, allowing you to stay undetected while blasting away at enemy troops without them suspecting a thing. Boss fights were a bit weak, but there were some truly great ones aswell. Graphics and score were also pretty fine aswell.

Lol, if haters here played MGS4 they would never say a bad thing about it again...the experience is that good. Now i'm talking about the story/singple player.

Gears of War IMO, is a much better online game, but its story was shallow and horrible. Gears 2 didn't change that (beat the game).

The discussion found in this thread makes me wish GS had a forum that you have to be at least 25 years old to post...
