If it's one thing I generally don't care about then it comes to graphics it's the amount of polygons. It's just numbers to me, I simply judge what I see.

Polygons! Yay! Do they make a game? Do they even make graphics? I dought it.plod2

lol? Of course polygons = models,without models how can you play game? text based mud's lol :lol: (not saying that text based games are bad)

But you dont need ridiculous high amount of polys to make game enjoyable,i think consolities should realy stop worying about graphics (kudos to nintendo for that) and start playing games

Leave graphics to PC

As a fan of both games I have to say even with the so called "lower" polygon level in MGS4 than Gears, Snake has a better character model detail and textures than Marcus. The face and the hair looks better too. MY OPINION. I'm probably gonna get flamed anyway...Haku_Ryushi

That's ok and your Opionion but it doesn't change the FACT that it is not on the same technical level graphics wise as Gears ;)

just for refrence, can you provide me with lets say 3 links to sony fans touting that mgs4 uses lots of POLYGONS for there characters? because since ive been here i havent see anyone say anything about polygons....besides you tc and like one other person in a completely unrelated thread that wasnt bashing mgs4

Sure, one number is bigger than another. But who cares? The whole point of adding more polygons is to make to models look better. And if one model looks better than another, then that's all that matters. You're free to disagree of course since it's subjective, but I really feel that arguing about polygon counts and resolution misses the point 9 out of 10 times.

It's probably just frustration due to all the claims over the past 2 and half months from people claiming that MGS4 is the console graphics king. I think it's rediculous too that people think MGS4 is the console graphics king, especially when I know there are other games on the PS3 that look better.

MGS4 looks amazing, but it's not the console graphics king (and neither is Killzone 2).

Yes if it pleases you is all that really matters, but to say it's graphics king like some cows do is just an opinion not fact as there are many games out on consoles now that are technically more advanced in the graphics department :)

I think thats basically the whole point in this thread. Say that polygon count is the only thing that matters in graphics and then bash the game.

MGS4 didn't get a 10 for just graphics. I think his point is that bad graphics doesn't stop the game from being one of the best this gen.

If a Wii game scores a 10 overall it will because it's be one of the best games this gen.

But i must admit that i admire people who make awesome stuff from limited hardware. Sometimes i think that its easier to develop great looking games for PC because they have "unlimited" resources

But games like Shadow of Colosus looks PHENOMENAL yet they are on really old hardware (playstation 2)

Damn 10,000 polys to create some of the most intricate models this gen

Goddam kojima that took some serious skill to do that and to make it so beautifull

Okay, since it seems like you guys need some convincing, I will prove it to you.

This is a wall from Gears of War. It appears to be very complex, and have layers of depth. I have taken a screenshot from three different angles.

This is the wireframe of that wall. It appears much more complex than it actually is, due to the use of complex shaders and normal mapping. In reality, it is an optical illusion, making a technically inferior image look superior.



Here is a brick wall from Gears of War. Once again, the images are taken from 3 different angles.

How many polygons would you say it was? Let's turn on the wireframe and see.



Bet you weren't expecting that. Flat surfaces are generally only one polygon in Unreal Engine 3.


Remember this guy from Gears of War? How many polygons would you say he was composed of?


Only around 8500 polygons.

Gears has a higher resolution but MGS4 runs a lot smoother with very little in the way of "textures" popping up. I hate load-screens in the middle of battle and MGS4 doesn't have them. MGS4>Gears! /thread!!!gdp72

MGS4 runs below 30FPS, and has several installs that can last up to 5 minutes.

Its because sony lied to them. The PS3 was orginally supposed to have a 1GB RAM at the time they gave them the dev kit but then Sony turned into idiots and instead went with the 2X 256MB RAM at the last minute and Kojima production recieved a different dev kit later.

Weird. seemed higher to me.. But the installs were still 3 to 2 minutes long.

Yet the models look better than Gears'. Shows you who the more skilled developers are I'd say.

That was only to start up the game. Which is no surprise. The beginning installs don't count.
