You seem to be implying it, being so confused a to why I would choose such a poorly-rated game as one of the best and most enjoyable I've played this entire gen.
Pinnacle game of this generation and there are few worthy contenders too. GTA4, Mass Effect, Demon Souls, Skyrim, Gears of War, Uncharted 2, Red Dead Redemption, Orange Box, Little Big Planet etc...

At least the game mechanics are somewhat suited for an online fragfest.
As for the single player how does it hit every note?
By telling a horribly written, horribly paced story that contradicts prior events in the series?
By ruining characters that were well established throughout the series and ignoring their prior developments?
By retconing major points in the series?
By caving in the universe and trying to connect dots were they dont meet? [spoiler] Like boiling down the Patriots to being the MGS3 support team? By acting as if Zero had the same love for The Boss as Big Boss did even though there was never any prior development or reasoning for that to be true? By saying that Paramedic is Dr. Clarke even though we knew that Dr. Clarke was a man and that Paramedic stood against all the types of atrocities that Clarke committed? There was NO development to even lead to such a conclusion that Paramedic transforms from a kind female to an insanely immoral man lol. Then Sigint is the Darpa Chief :lol: Yeah, the age, personality and voice surely line up, right? :roll: Oh and then Madnar has to get random mention out of nowhere for no reason as well. Horrible. Oh and lets bring in Big Boss for no reason and completely diminish his role both in life and in death from the previous games. [/spoiler]
How bout them Nanomachines, huh? They fix EVERYTHING! Lets forget that Liquid had two heartbeats in MGS2 and knew things that Ocelot couldn't. No, lets just chalk it up to Nanotherapy. And how bout that Vamp? So nanos made him heal so fast that he can recover from a bullet to the head? ok. How did nanos explain the fact that he could float around in low buoyancy liquids? Control people by their shadows? Read body movements well enough to dodge bullets? Run on water and up the sides of Big Shell? Oh, nanos, ok. Oh and here's one out of left field! Hey guys Naomi has Cancer! Lets see her die instantly after taking the injection while Otacon cries to her through an LCD screen side mounted on a robot. YES!
How about the mountains of pointless sh*t? For example. Why does Raiden, who is strong enough to hold up Outer Haven just minutes later, decide to chop off his arm to get out from under some rubble? And then why does he let himself get crushed under Outer Haven instead of just grabbing Snake and getting the **** out of there? The game is riddled with pointless nonsense like that.
How about that crappy TPS gameplay? No need for stealth tactics, just shoot everything you see and hit up Debin on his pager when you need more guns, nades, rockets, silencers, etc.. Oh you want to play it stealth you say? Cool. Just crawl around in your Octocam from point a to point b. DONE. Thats what happens when level design is an afterthought.
Oh and those levels :) Hey guys here is Shadow Moses! Hope you like nostalgia because the level is devoid of any soldiers, or meaningful design. Feel free to run straight through throwing down the truckload of Chaffs you came across. Oh and have fun in Outer Haven! We know its the last stage of "the final" MGS, but we took it upon ourselves to make sure it is 1000x more primitive in design than the Tanker from MGS2! Oh and hope you like Europe, because on every replay you will have to do the same damn thing even though you know exactly were to go. Awesome!
How bout that enemy AI that doesnt even match up to MGS2 and 3?
How about those bosses that basically have no involvement in the story and just boil down to generic shooter bosses in terms of gameplay?
Where are all my codecs and easter eggs? What happened to the incredible amounts of detail and thought that went into fleshing out the world you play in?
Worst part is I havent even scratched the surface. I wont even bother breaking down the horribly cheesy, vomit inducing moments in detail. You know what they are. Johny + Merryl. Snake + Raiden. lol

MGS4 should have gotten an 8. It was a fantastic game but it was the worst in the MGS series. SAGE_OF_FIRE
IF MGS4's score is to be altered it should be to a higher score, above the scale. Like an 11/10 like IGN suggested or a 12/10 like that Dangeki thread :P
I mainly liked MGS4 because of the gameplay, it was much better than previous entries. And the story I dont really concern myself with it, but it didnt bother me at all to take anything away from the game. And yeah its one of the best games I've played all gen.

And since you're here and you are all knowing when it comes to MGS, could you maybe try to explain at least a few of the points I brought up in my previous post?
MGS 4 is definitely a masterpiece, and certainly one of, if not the, greatest games this gen. Kind of sad it's a 2008 title and yet to be surpassed in a lot of ways though. It's genre defining, but not gen defining.
I'd say a gen defining game would be something like CoD, quickly thrown together, poorly made cash cows.
MGS 4 is like an old-school throwback title. A game made with a lot of love and care, budget be damned.

MGS4 10 > MGS2 9.6 GS MGS4 10 > MGS2 9.7 IGN. Sorry, MGS2 is my second favourite in the series and was the first Metal Gear game I played, only reason I played it was because it got a 9.6 and I wanted to find out what made this game a 9.6 as I thought it looked crappy, then I fell in love with the series. So MGS2 is a bucket full of nostaligia. A good, high AAA one of best games of 2001 game it is; but a AAAA, definitely best game of the generation it is not; unlike MGS4. MGS2 sold what, 7 million across PS2 (150 million install base) XBOX (25 million) and PC (millions) MGS4 sold 6 million on the PS3 alone, which is 50% more than MGS3 which also was PS- exclusive (until 3DS port in 2011) Sales=/= quality but what I meant is that MGS4 widened the audience..
