On a few points, I agree with the TC though I wouldn't lay the blame solely on MS because Sony is just as guilty. Both Sony and Microsoft have pushed consoles closer and closer to PCs in terms of capabilities (though it's not like we're word processing on them yet). Nintendo has more or less stayed focused on games but a consistent lack of quality third party efforts has hurt them for years now.
Bringing online gaming to the forefront has been a double edged sword in that split screen multi-player has really dropped off with many titles offering no support for it what so ever. Online gaming has it's place and can be great fun but I certainly don't want it replacing split screen entirely. Pushing console tech to the bleeding edge (at the time of launch) has resulted in consoles being more expensive up front. For generations, you could lay your mitts on a console for about $200 (see chart here: http://curmudgeongamer.com/imgdisplay.php3?shotfile=console-prices-absolute.png). Sony was the first serious contender to break this boundary with their $300 launch PS1 (Sega really shot themselves in the foot with the $400 Saturn). These things used to come with a game as well whereas I suppose we're lucky to even get one controller included nowadays. Microsoft followed Sony's lead on a $300 launch price point because consumers accepted it with the PS1 and PS2. It trended even higher this gen with the 360 launching without a HD at $300 and with at $400 (but let's face facts here, you NEED a HD to get the most out of the 360). Sony went further charging a staggering $500 and $600 for their console. The Wii on the other hand, launched a bit higher than what Nintendo historically does (they were at $200 every gen prior) with their $250 price point. However, at least they launch with a game included, simple as it may be.
On another note, I'm disappointed to see less and less difference between console gaming and PC gaming. Just about every major title on the 360 is, has been, or will be on the PC. Sony isn't too far behind in that respect either. People went to consoles to begin with because they were: cheaper, unique, and user friendly in many respects. You didn't see many titles like Super Mario Brothers, Okami, Megaman, Seaman (definitely unique), the fighting genre in general (Street Fighter, Virtua Fighter, Super Smash Bros), or the epic Metal Gear/Metal Gear Solid games on the PC (the occasional port not withstanding). If I wanted to play the latest Unreal Tournament, I'd invest in a gaming quality PC. That's not a slight to UT; I highly enjoyed the original, haven't played any of the others.
While the TC trended deep into misguided fanboy territory, there were a few ideas in there that probably should concern a few gamers.
