"Microsoft will invest roughly $1 billion for the development of exclusive titles for its newly revealed Xbox One console, Official Xbox Magazine reports in an interview with the game company's Don Mattrick and Phil Spencer."

"Responding to accusations that Microsoft turned its back on its core audience with the reveal of the new general entertainment console, Mattrick stated the company is planning a number of gamer-centric exclusives and deals"

Link

$1 billion is an awful lot of money, but it still remains to be seen if these are actually good games. I'm pretty sure they bought off some third party exclusives and maybe lumped in the exclusive dlc(lol) in that billion.

Microsoft will have to donate their systems to needy children if they expect anyone to actually play on them. Nobody is going to buy these.

Yeah.. that is a large sum... sadly enough most will probably go 1st party which Microsoft has mostly kinect studios....

However, tat is a shit ton of money. Maybe Rare will revive Killer Instinct... at this point that is about the only thing that could make me care.. at all. Microsoft is dead to me in the console world.

Why did Microsoft even enter the console business? It seems to me that all they're doing is throwing away money. By the time they start making profit they need to spend billions for their next generation console. And in total the profit is only a fraction of the expenses.

It's sad but that's not much with today cost of making AAA games and advertising them. Still I hope to see many non Kinect(lol) exclusives at E3 and hopefully new IPS to boot.

Last time I checked core gamer-centric meant non-Kinect titles. You morons not willing to wait cracks me up. For all you know they will be reviving Killer Instinct, Brute Force, Crimson Skies, Mechassault, Conker......
No one knows. But hey, keep crying over pointless shit and lose out on a lot of good games.

This and just because it will have kinect commands doesn't make it a kinect game. Looking forward to see these exclusives.

Well if they do get 3rd party exclusives it will probably timed exclusives or Xbox/PC 'exclusives'.

I'm still on the fence about the xbone but if Rare gives us another killer instinct and Brute Force I will most certainly cave.

Wonder if this counts the $400 Million NFL deal and whatever they spend on Halo TV deal (surely $100+ Million Easily)? If they are spending that much on those deals (which are questionable to me), PLUS another $1 Billion separate dedicated to games, PLUS even more hundreds of millions on marketing it all, then more power to them. But it might be tough to recoup all of those investments on top of the hardware costs. Do the math and how many consoles + Gold memberships will need to be sold. I'm skeptical about this, since it seems impossible it could be profitable. But like I said *if* they are spending money in actual games development, more power to them. However I suspect this total includes even marketing costs and "exclusive" DLC arrangements and co-advertising. Not $1 billion in actual games.

That's nothing, they waste millions on timed exclusive DLC, they recently just gave the NFL like 500Million for the Madden deal. Lems should know M$ better by now. If that NFL is counted and it probably is they are already down more then half that.

shawn30

Their gaming division has been making a profit the last 3 or 4 years. The Xbox 360 is profitable and in the black despite RROD and everything else. Count yourself educated.

2013 article "Microsoft Xbox division has lost $3 billion in 10 years". So on the whole, XBOX is still not profitable since it's inception.

http://www.neowin.net/news/report-microsofts-xbox-division-has-lost-nearly-3-billion-in-10-years

Sure, It's been profitable for a few years now with it's biggest year apparantly being 2011, but new console almost always means it will lose money it's first year or two.  So the hole for the XBOX will just get deeper.

I can tell you, signing huge frivelous NFL deal, massive Halo TV deal, and Billions more on advertising seem more like "throwing the kitchen sink" at a problem than running an efficient, profitable business. Steve Balmer needs to reign these madmen (at the Xbox division) in before they destroy the company.

Their deal with AMD alone on the hardware side is reported at another $3 Billion. The overall hardware costs must be double that or more when you factor in R&D and manufacturing facilities (just talking fixed costs, not variable costs of production).

http://www.vg247.com/2013/05/27/amd-microsoft-deal-for-xbox-one-cost-over-3-billion/

Again, do the math for how many consoles they will need to sell even assuming a generous $100 profit margin (which will *NEVER* happen at launch). At this pace of spending they are virtually gauranteeing that XBone will not be profitable. But what's worse, they are putting more money at risk so that if it's not successful you won't just have your normal "console launch" losses, but you could have multi-billion write-downs on top of them. Which is basically the same thing that happened to Sony last gen.

They had the funds this gen too and they didn't make games. It's just marketing money and timed DLC deals. You'd think Lems would have learned by now.

And the Microsoft propaganda continues, and Lems fall for it once again.
