Reason #462,501 why it's hard not to hate Microsoft:
Announced on Monday at the keynote conference was XBOX live's new affiliation with ESPN. Amid all the nausea inducing presentations that made-up the latter two-thirds of that conference, this was one new feature that I was actually excited for. I get ESPN through my cable provider, but my TV is standard definition, so I'm forced to watch sporting events in poor quality. However, the monitor my Xbox is connect to is 1080p, so I assumed I would be able to watch ESPN broadcasts in HD through Xbox live.
Wrong.
During the conference, Microsoft left out the small detail that you're only eligible for ESPN on live if your ISP is already elegible for ESPN3 (the internet-based service that ESPN live is based on). So, basically, the only people who will receive ESPN on Xbox live are those who already receive the exact same service on their PC. Users whose ISP does not receive ESPN3 (i.e. the only ones who would actually benefit from receiving ESPN on Xbox live) are left out in the cold, and get nothing. In short, this feature is pointless.
