Reminds me of Romance of the 3 Kingdoms when you advisor said 'You don't need to use a sledgehammer to kill a fly.' I know, but it sure is fun...

At the beginning of Last Generation(PS2, starting with PSOne), M$ aimed at Sony and went for it. They lost.

At the Beginning of This Generation, M$ finally took a large chunk of Sony's Marketshare, in part because Sony lost Marketshare for a variety of reasons. In part because M$ improved as Online gaming, and spent money aquiring Sony exclusives from 3rd parties.

The Darkhorse that everyone didn't bet on, the Darkhorse that looked to be M$ before the XBOX 1 came out, ended up being Nintendo. That is funny.

So while Sony and M$ battle it out for 2nd place, Nintendo is now ruling, and it only took M$ pushing Sony so hard and distracting Sony, and Nintendo's new Direction.

Who can blame M$, they looked at what the TOP DOG in the industry was when they were getting Interested (PSOne), and wanted to take on the PS2. The PS2 won again, but Round 2 started, and M$ seemingly were doing it, but that Nintendo changed the rules again.

So it goes, Nintendo (NES), Nintendo (SNES), Sony (PSOne), Sony(PS2)...and so far Nintendo(Wii, year 2) again.(M$ was supposed to be in that picture somewhere.)

Oh well, that's my thoughts. Ironically, as a gamer, I'm more in tune with what Sony and M$ are doing this year, than Nintendo.

MS did loose.....but do you think they came in thinking they will dominate on their first stint?..I don't think they did "even for MS"

I remember reading they wanted to enter the market and develop the xbox brand.... first gen.....Then continue developing the brand while positioning themselves as a contender in the market.... second gen....

Then complete world domination ;)

judging by the crappy selection of games it has compared to 360 and even ps3, it would be different from the other leaders in the past. Normally the console leader who secures the the lead has the best game line up or close to it.

So this generation starts, MS promises to make the gaming industry as mainstream as possible by catering to all kind of people and make 1 billion sales from their console only ( @0:26:00 and hey they keep repeating the same damn number during the press after that ), in the process they stole everything Sony, put them on a difficult situation rather than expanding the market and what did they gain?

Lets compare last gen to this gen.

Last gen, they sold 25M consoles in their life time ( 4 years ), this gen, they will sell 25M consoles in their 3rd year after launching the console which is kinda sad compared to what they are aiming for, or compared to the PS2, PS3 or Wii.

Last gen they had in their life time Halo as their selling point, this gen, they have Halo 3 as their selling point.

They expanded something called online multiplayer...ok that was something great and I can't deny that.

Last gen the PS2 sold more than 100M consoles sold ( 6 years ), this gen, they will sell 20M consoles in their second year after launching the console.

I wonder how they were aiming for the 1B consoles sold after hurting the industry leader like this? do they really care? what did they gain for doing such a thing?

At this rate, I don't think the gaming industry will expand.

Our hope lies on the hands of Wii this gen, the question though, will the Wii outsell the PS2 total sales to expand our hobby to bring more people to play games.

Yeah, whether that affects the Wii at all is anyone's guess. It's true though, the console that was #1 sales, had the best games (meaning most High Quality titles). Strange generation we are in, but it's far from over. Nintendo and Sony are still working on their Second year.

I read that too, but well after they were Losing to the PS2. No one starts a business with hopes of losing. Ultimately, that's what is happening, and who knows, this race isn't over, they can still take it, maybe.

You have a sportsware manufacture and retail company. You make the best sportswear. I come along and make sportswear also. It's arguably as good as yours and you no longer have the market cornered. It forces you to try and come up with new designs and compete with good offers. Your do not achieve your previous dominance....

...how is that bad for anyone but you?

...competition=win for consumers

...its very very simple stuff

The only way this is bad, is if you are a absolutely reliant on Sony's success. So either you're a share-holder in Sony or your what many on these boards call a ....I've forgotten, remind me please :P

You're the one who is wrong. Microsoft has lost billions of dollars on the 360. They are in the red at the moment. They will continue to be in the red until they make back all the money they've lost. I think you should take an economics class because you obviously have no clue what you're talking about.

masiisam

Are you sure about that?

http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/50957

Did you even read that article? They lost 3.2 billion dollars in 2006 and 2007 and made 500 million in 2008. That means they are still over 2.5 billion dollars in the red.

PS2 sales = 140million...if it manage to sell 10million from now until 2010. That'd be

150million systems....I don't see the Wii making it to that.

Did Microsoft ruin Sony?

or did Sony just underperform?

I would argue that it is Sony not living up to its expectations....more than Microsoft ruining Sony....Sure Microsoft and Nintendo have both been on there "A" game....but Sony i would argue has been bringing honestly an average effort...

Then again maybe it is impossible to be dominant 3 gens in a row.

Actually he said the games industry would reach a billion people this gen (Xbox, PS, Nin and PC).

Cows will spin anything to make MS look bad and then other cows will back them up, typical fanboy crap that even they dont believe, but they still say it just to annoy people.

So if someone losses1lb, I should say congrats for him, does this 1lb even matter? because apparently it doesn't show up.

Stealing =/= gaining, if MS consider stealing as gaining then good for them.

Blackbond

A loss is loss. That is a fact you cannot change. What opinion you have on the facts is irrelevant. Its factually proven that a loss occurred.

Stealing which is a silly term in the business world. Well let me define what you are trying to say.

Microsoft GAINS a game while Sony LOSES a game. This is in actuality a swing because a loss to you with a gain from a competitor is considered 2x gain.

Example. Sony = 1 and MS = 0

Sony loses game would be Sony -1. MS gaining game would be +1.

1 - 1 = 0

0 + 1 = 1

Thus the swing.

How do you say stealing is a silly term in business?

Bill Gates stole the OS of Steve Jobs and changed it a little bit calling it windows, alot of companies steal, it is a common practice to destroy the leader/innovator in any industry.

Sony didn't lose the games, only the exclusivity was stolen.

And I don't understand why you considered gaining a game is 2x gain just becuase it is from the competition?

Yea Sony lost something ( sales/marketshare ) but MS didn't gain anything ( sales/marketshare ) from their dirty strategies.

Blackbond

The User base for the 360 is larger then that of the PS3. Meaning that MS has gained market share. Why are you trying to oppose the facts? It is a fact that MS has gained market share not only in the console market but compared to their previous entry in the original xbox.

Because thats the fact, Nintendo gained the market share from Sony's, MS is at the same place as last gen.

[QUOTE="Cedmln"]Thats the whole reason they got into this crap was to shoot down Sony for whatever reason.Steppy_76

I hope Sony gets even next-gen.

If they need to get even then that implies that they lost ground while they have to catch up to the ground MS GAINED.

Yea Sony lost something ( sales/marketshare ) but MS didn't gain anything ( sales/marketshare ) from their dirty strategies.

1. MS is closing in on the 4 year total of the original xbox(over 3 of which the machine was priced at 200 bucks or less May of 02 - November of 05). It has done this in 3 years with less than one month so far of sub 200 dollar price points. Let's see where things stand in a year or two.

2. What exactly are MS's "dirty" strategies. When they revealed the xbox 360 in may of 05, they showed real games due out that year, and made real claims about its power. Sony overstated everything about the PS3(Dual 1080p displays, all games 1080p, 3x as powerful as the 360, "network storage", "cell clusters" helping game rendering, PS3 being a network hub), they showed games not due for YEARS or not at all and used FAKE footage to display the "power" of the PS3, made false claims about its release date(hey we're coming out in spring of 06, why buy a 360 when you can buy a machine 3x as powerful less than 6 months later, then when spring comes "hey, it's only 6 months before you get the uberconsole just wait, then when it comes out and is merely a 360 with a BR drive, "hey, we'll be better just wait until devs learn to use the PS3.) There is NO way you can call MS's strategies "shady" unless you're willing to call sony's downright disgusting.

your name suits you well.

1- they are at second place, whats changed? what did they gain?

2- Every company had some faults but MS is just aiming for Sony and after what they did, they didn't gain anything.

"In all, the division is known to have lost over $7.17 billion--$1.89b in the 2007 fiscal year, $1.28b in the 2006 fiscal year, and upwards of $4b before that. The company had long expected the division's first profit to materialize in the current 2008 fiscal year."

They've gained market share and recognition -- Saying otherwise is stupidity.

How did they gain marketshare? they are still in second place and there is a big chance they will go third after this gen ends.

Wow are you really not getting this? How is MS in the same place this gen as last gen if they are ahead of Sony? Sure they are still in 2nd again but Sony is in last. Which would tell you that there is a flip of positions which would tell you that one gained position over another while the other lost position to the other.

MS has a larger market share, and a lareger user base then the PS3. Not only that but Sony went from #1 to #3 in the U.S where Microsoft is enjoying incredible success.

You look at last gens numbers and you compare them to this gens numbers. To say that MS hasn't gained anything is just silly. Oh and do you check the Software sales man?

They gained market share because of the failures of Sony and a one year head start. They are losing market share every month.

[QUOTE="Dante2710"]lol m`kay, microsoft surely ruined sonyKickinurass

And gained nothing.

thats nice..now why should you or anyone else for that matter care? and you never even explain how this was runing sony.

I care because I like my hobby and I don't like it to be small again like 10 years ago, I want it to expand and be accepted among people and I want people to like what we like and see what we were experiencing for the past 15-20 years and understand it why we love it.

They stole everything Sony, I said it in my OP, I don't have to explain it more because everybody knows what was stolen.

I'd raise the argument Sony ruined themselves by thinking brand loyalty would offset a limited launch library, prolonged delays on Playstation franchises, a opening $600 price tag and a generally arrogant attitude.

As a gamer, it was good to see them get smacked in the face. Look at how competition has drove the PS3 forward with firmware updates and a widening library of first-party titles.

but it really is funny that the time when MS where at their best this gen was when there was no "next-gen" competition.

MS is like a dirty player who broke the feet of the fastest runner in a marathon who was the leader, put'em in third place but he forgot all about the little guy who was behind him who innovated his way and techniques by going infront of the dirty player during his dirty work.

He didn't gain anything from his dirty work, maybe he became a little bit faster than the broken feet runner but he didn't gain anything.

Once again a cow that takes things WAY out of context. Here's a direct quote from just before the 26:00minute mark and slightly into the 26 minute mark.

"if we work together to create games and experiences that really deliver on the promise of the HD era. As an industry, we'll take games places they've never been before. In the HD era, we're gonna reach 1 billion with our medium."

Now please tell me just where exactly they say it's going to be with the 360 alone? J Alard continues on talking about the industry as a whole and how gaming has surpassed movies, music and television as the number one seat in the entertainment industry. Maybe it's time you cows learn to understand the basics before you open up your mouths again.

Last Gen Market Share

  • PS2 = 140 Million = 75%
  • Xbox = 24 Million= 13%
  • Gamecube = 22 Million = 12%
Current Gen Market Share
  • PS3 = 15 million = 23%
  • 360 = 21 million = 30%
  • Wii = 32 million = 47%
Changes in Market Share

  • 75% down to 23%
  • 13% up to 30%
  • 12% up to 47%

Net Change in Market Share

  • -52%
  • +17%
  • +35%

How did they gain Marketshare?

By increasing their Market Share by 17% man  You can remain in second and still increase or decrease market share man.

Weren't them? As soon as the PS3 and the Wii came to the market, the 360 has been the least selling console worldwidely. Both PS3 and Wii outsold them in 2007 and in 2008 (i mean, for what has passed of this year). The 360 only outsold them individually in 2006, but that was the launch year of those systems, that only came out at the very end of the year.
