The company reported the results of its fiscal Q3 today, and it revealed that it generated $1.928 billion in revenues from Xbox and Windows 10 gaming. That is up 4 percent year-over-year, according to Microsoft. An ongoing shift to digital for many consumers, purchasing games and other items through online stores instead of the local GameStop of Walmart, and the continued strength of Xbox Live were the primary drivers for this growth.

“Xbox software and services revenue grew 7 percent driven by continued adoption of digital distribution and a strong game lineup,” Microsoft explained in a note to investors.

For Xbox Live, that service had 52 million active players last quarter.

@loe12k:

Nice cherry-picking. Take a closer, more honest look, however, and you'll find that overall the MS game division took a significant decline in monthly active users as compared to the previous quarter, which is, ironically, the angle that lems typically take, when the situation is reversed, when defending the XB1 from the arse-kicking it is getting in sales compared to that of the PS4.

From GS:

"Microsoft attributed this to "growth in Xbox Live," which saw its monthly active users climb 13% to 52 million [as compared to last year]... [however] It's a decline from the previous quarter, when Xbox Live MAUs reached a record 55 million"

That's common after the holidays...Parents buy 1-3 month cards and some people don't renew. Quit being biased and accept that Microsoft and Xbox are on the rise. Profits are looking great as Sony is struggling for it's identity.

@reduc_ab_: You're the one who's cherry picking... of course this quarter will be lower than Q4 last year when there were more major game releases and holidays.

Big jump in year-on-year active users is more important and telling. Xbox is healthy which is good for the industry.

Of course you look for things to knock this result and i did not cherry pick. I did not see the point in bringing it up.

"Active Xbox Live players were down from 55 million during the busy gift-giving holiday months."

More gamer's played games during the holiday period! This is normal not a big deal.

"Defending the XB1 from the arse-kicking it is getting in sales compared to that of the PS4" Ok we get it.

Nope, just providing the full details of the report. Or rather, the missing details that the OP chose to leave out. Bottom line, XB1 active monthly users dropped significantly since last quarter. Spin that however you wish. It is the truth.

A drop after the holidays is normal. Sony likely experiences the same you need to chill out.

Um, I'm not annoyed, nor am I disputing that the fact has much to do with last quarter being the holidays. You are putting words in my mouth. I am simply stating that the decrease has occurred. I agree with you: the holidays probably had much to do with it. Please, friend, just calm down. I like you.

Dude, who the hell are you kidding. You literally posted everything except for one detail--and that one detail is that MS took a hit this quarter. C'mon, now.

Well i would have if i knew you react like this, overblowing this way too much.

Nope, "overblowing" nothing. Just stating the facts. MS saw a decline in active users this quarter as compared to last, and you chose to leave this out of your post. There is no discussion to be had, as this is the truth.

Ok do you want a medal? I did not chose to leave it out. I posted the results for this quarter. I did not know you be annoyed i did not post xbox live was down from 55 to 52 million after the Holidays. I don't see why that's important, explain the future ramifications?

Um, I'm not annoyed, nor am I disputing that the fact has much to do with last quarter being the holidays. You are putting words in my mouth. I am simply stating that the decrease has occurred. I agree with you: the holidays probably had much to do with it. Please, friend, just calm down. I like you.

It's cool i not here to make enemies., let's move on agreed!

I have no horse in the Microsoft vs, Sony race. But the reason to compare first quarter last year to first quarter this year, instead of this quarter to last quarter, is because of different trends throughout the year.

EVERY consumer business would look like it was in free fall if Jan-March was compared to the previous Oct-Dec. some businesses do as much as 80% of their sales between Thanksgiving and Christmas. That's why so many stores close after doing worse than expected in the Holiday season,

For the people arguing about the decline and how its "normal", just google Xbox monthly active users. MAU have dropped in two spots since September 2014:

  • Between Dec 2015 & March 2016
  • June 2016 & Sept 2016

Now it has dropped again between Dec 2016 & March 2017. It looks like MAU broke even between Dec 2014 & March 2015. As a lot of people are saying, the drop can definitely be related to the short term holiday frenzy. It could also be because of many things. All that matters is that it has dropped a little bit. Its a non issue (IMO obviously) unless it drops multiple quarters in a row.

That's common after the holidays...Parents buy 1-3 month cards and some people don't renew. Quit being biased and accept that Microsoft and Xbox are on the rise. Profits are looking great as Sony is struggling for it's identity.

MS count silver and gold as well as free PC ones.

So there's also this:

"But the company also takes a cut of any sales of third-party games sold through its digital stores, and mammoth launches like Mass Effect: Andromeda, For Honor, and Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands played a role here."

It's not just MS games making them money.

Exactly... but certain fanboys will be/are interpreting this as a huge decrease in XBL numbers blah blah.

But anyway, these are good numbers. Xbox division is healthy.

@playmynutz: like 6 years ago you probably wouldn't say this so proudly. Ms was give much love to Windows store when it came to games.

The push only began after xbone started losing in sales. Ill give it another gen before i really consider ms serious about pc gaming.

Let one future xbone sell as much as halo once did and watch how fast they give pc the backseat again.

Well see tho

But as digital demand increases, so too will the digital infrastructure and, thus, the staff required to maintain it.

Disagree or agree with their strategy. They just made a good profit.

Hope it translates into more game.

@jv303: not like all the retail workers and those who work in disc manufacturing are just all going to get IT infrastructure jobs. Same for the people who create the print art, etc.

Such is the progression of time and technology. The workforce adapts.

Don't tell me you buy physical games out of some sort of blue collar savior complex. Gamestop and GAME have been dead men walking for a while now.
