What I got from that is, Microsoft and Toshiba are working together to put a built in HD-DVD drive in the Xbox 360. Nice little spin a Nintendo website put on it though.

If you think Microsoft is going to put out a new console in 2008 you're brain dead. Don't expect a new console before 2010, they'll still launch a year before the next Playstation and the Xbox 360 will still have 5 years under it's belt.

Well its like this.

As PC Hardware progresses our consoles seem so out of date more and more each day.

Holiday 2009 would be a great time to release a new console, however to win over the hearts of millions a few things have to happen.

Most 360 add-ons have tobe able to be used on this bad boy. Controllers, wifi.....etc Also b/c has to be standard

I enjoy consoles just as much as pc's but if I have to buy everything all over again im just gonna stick with pc for my games.

I have no problem buying new hardware such as the console to have a more up to date system, but in all honesty no one could justify it being ok to spend money on extra controllers or wifi all over again.....be liek me having to buy a new keyboard and mouse each time I upgrade my pc.

I figure in 08 I will buy anywheres from 25-35 games according to ign's release date list.

If no b/c on new system then I might as well stick with 360.

Please note the article said introduce a new system late 08 or at CES 09. It didn't say anything about the system going on sale. New systems are generally introduced about 2 years before they go on sale. This would put the next system in 2010 or 2011. That's five to six years after the start of this gen and is perfectly in keeping with the average console life cycle.myke2010

It's a new SKU. Probably to replace the Elite as the multimedia centered SKU. If they launched a new console in 2009 they would be dead in the water, and they know this. 2010 is a logical year. Since Sony will probably launch their next console in 2011.

I don't understand why they would do this. Not a smart decision for busniess.dream431ca

Wow you're pretty smart, you should become CEO of Microsoft! You'll teach them a thing or to about Business! With all the knowledge and experience you posses, how could they resist you?

I'll bet it's just a new SKU..People really shouldn't get excited over something that they have next to no details on.

360 is my last MS console. They got it right this time and to abandon it before it starts profiting big time is just pure stupidity.

The OG Xbox was capable to perform very well in terms of software. Look at GoWII on PS2. That game looks absolutely amazing on the old hardware of the PS2. Imagine GoWII using the full power of the OG Xbox.

ironcreed

Well said, Bio. The original Xbox had alot more potential to be tapped, yet what did MS do? They completely abandoned it and it's user base. I realize that it was because they lost their asses on the Xbox, but still, they are not making a profit on the 360 either.

Wait and see here in a couple of years, they will probably do the same thing with the 360, leaving it to to die off as they did the original Xbox in favor of releasing a new one. In which case, they will be screwing over their user base yet again. In fact, that is probably a plan that is already in place.

i agree they abadoned it, but you have to admit nintendo had nothing for the gamecube late in its life span, except loz:tp, which was also a wii game anyway

If they show it in 2009 it could betwo years before it comes out. Sometime between mid 2010 and the end of 2011 it wouldn't at all be unreasonable.

If they end up doing this it would be a big misstake. I mean this generation already have had far too many re-re-re-r-e-reeeeeleases of consoles. We got Xbox 360 core, premium and the poorly selling elite including the upcommin Arcade version.

PS3 I don't know how many different versions actually, they seem to cancel and alter the hardware space in that thing every month. 20-40-60-80-120? It's just a matter of time until we get a 0gig and 140 gig version.

The Wii...well nothing new here yet...except for all the different add ons. And be sure to look out for a new Wii version following the next year. Changes in the motion sensinghardware, including of HD support etc.

Not to mention the fact that every single console still is +200$ each.

I DO not want M$ or sont to totally take over the industry. tif they had there way a new 360 would come every 2 years!!!

The_Gamer81

it's funny you said that because I am a developer (C#.net),and I mainly work on M$ platforms. M$ renews its products every 3-4 years. SQL server 2005 for example was release in late 04 and now we going to see a SQL server 2008, lol that's 3 years. It's totally rediculous. I am working on my MCPD(EA) certification which is based on the 2.0 framework (this framwork was a 2005 release) and now they're on framework 3.5. The second you get familiar with a product they have, the next second a new product is coming out, and because I am a consultant I need to know the new features in the new product so I can sell it to the customer. Get used to it!! that's how M$ works, not to mention how they always release early on all of their products only to have "service packs" fix the issues later (does that remind you of the 360 or what? released the console with hardware problems, but they trying to fix it later ). That's pretty much why I don't support the 360. I have an awesome gaming PC and a PS3 which to me seems to be the best gaming combo. I can't stand what M$ does sometimes. If this news is true, I think Gamers should boycott them. WARNING to ever gamer out there, If M$ domniates the gaming Market, I believe that we will see crappier games with a new hardware release every 3-4 years, and that's coming from a guy that works on M$ products.

Every software company does this - new releases every 3 years(if not sooner) service packs and hot fixes in between. In the IT worldif you are 3 years behind the technology you are going to last very long.

The deals they made with Intel and Nvidia forced them to abandon the xbox, and forced them to have crappy bc on the 360.

This article was on a Nintendo Biased website. It was skewed. Read the article at any real gaming site and you will see it's merely talking about releasing a new sku to target a new audience. Just like the elite was. Just like Sony with the PS2 with DVR.

This time around MS made much better deals and has positioned themselves much better in the market. You'd be a fool to think that the 360 will follow the same timeline as the original xbox.

what you said is partially true, but not completely true. a database server for example should be released every 5 years not every 3 years. The reason is very simple, the companies adapting SQL server 2005 for example need to see how reliable/not reliable the database engine is, and that alone takes more than three years. as a matter of fact M$ was going to release a SQl server every 2 years but stoped because of that reason.

The elite sells well enough, it would sell more if MS actually produced more. And the Core is being replaced by the arcade version, same thing but a better package.(Still sucks overall though)

The world is dynamic and the companies want to continue competing in an ever growing, more competitive and evolving market. Get over it.

The Xbox started in 01', the 360 in 05'. 4 years, the 720 in 09', 4 years, big deal. Although I doubt it will come out then.

5 years inbetween consoles is normal. Lets not forget that the 360 has been out since 2005. 2010 is reasonable for the next console.kevy619

why are peiople so surprised by this its not like they are releasing it in 08 or 09 they are just going to reveal it or maybe just a part of it. are people so stupid to think sony is not working on a new console as we speak or nintendo for that matter. the 360 was unnounced sometime in late 2004 or early 2005, the ps3 and cell were introduced in 2005 aswell. i expect it to arrive in 2010/2011

Get over what?

-Oh , yeah. No thats enough, I'll just go with one controller and Super Paper Mario, thanks. * one month later* Oh wth? They announced a new Wii!?

-Yeah I would also want a couple more controllers with my PS3. *a couple of months later* Oh what the .... rumble and a new better hardrive?

-Ok, sure no prob. 299$? Keep the change, it's only a dollar. Yeah! Finally Halo 3! *one month later* WTF? A New 360 with new quieter and cooler chip? Now what?

You have any idea of how much that pisses consumers off like myself? I was actually really lucky not to buy a DS before the lite came out. Same goes with the GBA - SP. I got stuck with my cursed GBA while my friends could actually be able to see what games they were playing. Does Sega CD and all the other add ons ring a bell? I might also add that none of the Xbox versions are selling well enough in terms of profit.

We consumers tend not want to get screwed over, so I'm I afraid I will not ...get over it.

It has nothing to do with you. Companies improve their products to bring in new customers. Perhaps every electronics company shouldn't release new products every 6months to a year. Perhaps food companies shouldn't release new products to try to re-entice the market it buying their food. Perhaps we should all wither away and die, afraid of change?

I'll leave that up to you.

Huh? How did food companies come into this. Spending money on food =/= as spending 250$ of hard earned money on a new slightly upgraded console 6 months after you bought it.

And no, MicroSoft, Sony and Nintendo knows that they are going to "tune-up" their consoles, it's just that they want us consumers to buy all the dated one before they release the new ones. Keeps them from having to throw and buy back all the old ones. And no I don't approve of that. Perhaps you think that it's wonderful to buy a original DS just having to go back to the store you bought it in, add more money or whatnot just to get the "good version" of a console.

Afraid of change?...wow...those are some poor arguments. And improve does not include mislead.

I'm sure they think about it, but thinking about it for a while and then executing it doesn't guarantee success. Do you know how many business ideas have fallen flat? Millions and millions, and many of them were from qualified "business" people. Just because it is from somebody "qualified" doesn't mean it will be a success.

The fact of the matter is, if Microsoft was solely in the business of video games they would be doing very poorly right now, very poorly. At least from a profitable standpoint and, unfortunately, that's what it's all about. Luckily the whole company is such a massive behemoth and they are making big money in other areas - they're able to easily absorb those losses.

And I'm not a teenager.

The average console lifecycles sucks. Consoles need to last at least 7 - 9 yaers IMO. Every 5 - 7 years is too much, again, IMO.

oh teamxobx has this up also. but on teamxbox it says, that a Toshiba spokesman said MS and Toshiba are creating a xbox 360 with hd-dvd. this is being maked to rival the ps3 as being a blu ray player, which has caused it to sell more as a player then a gaming machine. so appearently MS and Toshiba are going to relelase a xbox 360 OR it would be under the toshiba name, it would be a entertainment hub, it would allow the use of hd-dvd, hdmi with full 1080p support. theres also considering adding a dual hdtv tuner.

but remember this is to rival against the ps3 as a blu ray player.

If they want to make it a decent movie player, then have get rid of RROD, and looking back at M$'s history with glitches and stuff, I don't think they're fixing that soon.

Indeed.

Me ...

I'll wave at ya from the Fox News crew cameras covering the launch event.

Now that future proof PS3 will have a Atari 2600 on it and I will be waving that in one hand & the Wii in the other...

Both being placed in the trash can as I pick up the New King console prolly launching with more AAA games then both those duds combined !

So they want to loose even MORE money?

If this is true I see it as there "Ride or die" system for Microsoft's Gaming Division. A lot like the SEGA Dreamcast at least in a metaphorical sense.

[QUOTE="dream431ca"]I don't understand why they would do this. Not a smart decision for busniess.3picuri3

well two things make me love this idea:

1) we only live once, i'd rather by playing with bleeding edge technology every 2-3 years instead of 5-10 like Sony wants to.

2) i'm used to upgrading my PC ever couple of years, why the hell would I care if I had to buy a new console every 2-3?

so yeah, i really really hope MS does this. might finally kill Sony off too :)

I agree with this poster 100%!!!!!

I don't understand why they wouldn't. This gen they've proven that people are dumb enough to buy a console over and over with a 30% failure rate. Why not make something new and charge them again.

I DO not want M$ or sont to totally take over the industry. tif they had there way a new 360 would come every 2 years!!!

Juice_24

Why are people excited for this? When you spend $400 on a console, you think you would like to last a a little bit before having to drop $500 plus on the next one.

no?just me?

Are you really thick enough to support a console monopoly?

... You know what, don't answer that.

Just you. You don't understand the depths of the lemmings affinity for spin and damage control.

5 years inbetween consoles is normal. Lets not forget that the 360 has been out since 2005. 2010 is reasonable for the next console.kevy619

They planning to bring it late 0'8 and 0'9..But damn after i think about the 360 being out for 3 years and they barely past the 12 million mark that just suckss..

Nah - they studied up on Sony's last gen plan; The PS2 -and copied the formula !

Like I said, affinity for Spin and Damage Control. When someone brings up the XBOX the response is: this isn't last-gen.

When someone brings up the failure rate, they jump right on the PS2, which wasn't even close to what the 360's failure rate is like.

Do they give you a pamphlet of possible attacks and how to spin it when you buy a 360? Maybe a whole handbook?

When someone says Halo is the same as the last Halo: "why mess with perfection?"

When someone mentions Ratchet: "it's just like the last one!"

When someone mentions the failure rate: "the PS2 had DRE!"

When someone mentions the exorbitant price of XBL: "I'll pay more for better features".

When someone mentions the PS3's extra features: "I won't pay more for better features".

When someone makes a point they can't defend whatsoever: "LAIR 4.5 LOL"

When someone makes a point they can't defend whatsoever: "HALO 9.5 LOL"

When someone brings up Halo's lackluster graphics: "it's the gameplay that's important".

When someone brings up Halo's lackluster gameplay: "but the graphics pwn!"

When Microsoft releases their 11th SKU: "it's good to offer the consumers choices!"

When Sony releases their 3rd SKU: "Sony is ****ing stupid for releasing all these SKUs!"

When someone says the 360 is all shooters: "shooters are the best games and they are all that matter".

When the 360 announces a game that isn't a shooter: "see, it's not all shooters!"

When someone mentions another site: "Gamespot scores are all that matter".

When someone mentions Tekken: "DOA is better".

When someone points out that Tekken routinely outscores DOA on Gamespot: "Gamespot doesn't matter".

When someone mentions Ratchet: "platformers suck anyway".

When someone mentions platformers: "Banjo Threeie GOTY!"

Stop me if this is getting familiar at all.

This is why System Wars is utterly and absolutely pointless. Every single positive can be turned into a negative, and vice versa. It's literally sickening, I feel like I am actually going to vomit.

Lems, feel free to use any or all of my theoretical responses. Print them out and keep them close at hand.

Its expected - to announce a system 1 to 2 years before it is revealed. None the less, this site is just adding to the rumors. It does not confirm the doom and gloom some of you idiots bought into by reading it. Think. Give yourself some credit. It's for your own good.Â
