Jesus...no wonder indies are running away from Microsoft :D

http://polytroncorporation.com/were-not-going-to-patch-the-patch

Had FEZ been released on steam instead of XBLA, the game would have been fixed two weeks after release, at no cost to us. And if there was an issue with that patch, we could have fixed that right away too!
We believe the save file corruption issue mostly happened to players who had completed, or almost completed the game. If you hadn?t already seen most of what FEZ had to offer, your save file is probably safe. It doesn?t happen if you start a new game.
We believe the current patch is safe for an overwhelming majority of players.
The patch fixes almost everything that?s been wrong with the game since launch. The framerate issues, the loading, the skips, the death loops, everything! All that stuff is fixed! And right now, nobody can get to it since the patch was pulled. For 99% of people, it makes FEZ a better game.
To the less-than-1% who are getting screwed, we sincerely apologize. We know this hurts you the most, because you?re the ones who put the most times into the game. And this breaks our hearts. We hope you dont think back on your time spent in FEZ as a total waste.
Microsoft gave us a choice: either pay a ton of money to re-certify the game and issue a new patch (which for all we know could introduce new issues, for which we?d need yet another costly patch), or simply put the patch back online. They looked into it, and the issue happens so rarely that they still consider the patch to be ?good enough?.
It wasn?t an easy decision, but in the end, paying such a large sum of money to jump through so many hoops just doesn?t make any sense. We already owe microsoft a LOT of money for the privilege of being on their platform. People often mistakenly believe that we got paid by Microsoft for being exclusive to their platform. Nothing could be further from the truth. WE pay THEM.
So we?re going to go ahead and put Title Update back online, and for a vast majority of people it?s going to make FEZ a better game.
Thank you for your understanding and continuing support.
Sincerely,
The Polytron Team]

That sounds like a very Phil Fishian, SW-friendly way of saying "MS gets a cut of the sales because they're effectively the publisher+retailer".

Is it? He says he owes money, so that's impossible as Microsoft would take the cut themselves and just pass the remaining money to Polytron. So either Polytron really needed to pay MS, or he's lying.

Apparently it costs $40,000 to simply patch your game, whether it's a indie game worth a few megabytes or not.
Microsoft continues to treat developers like those of Fez and Super Meat Boy like trash and eventually drives them nuts.
When will people see the true cancer to gaming that is Microsoft?

Wow people on SW are stupider than I thought. Does anyone even read the link or just blindly attack microsoft? Phil himself even said they waived the first fee, and polytron screwed up, also they said microsoft helped on what matters most, the game. DO all you rabbid cows really just ignore this? Also who ever thinks consoles are dying made me laugh with your stupidity. That was laughable.

The fact that The Witness (from Braid creator) and The Binding of Isaac (from Super Meat Boy creator) aren't on XBLA explains a lot.

RyuRanVII

exactly.

Disgusting really, seeing the corporate apologists in this thread. Steam and Sony are the best way to go for indie developers. Lemmings are no gamers, by supporting Microsoft in any kind, you're helping destroy to the indie scene and helping destroy gaming. Just like TF2 never got updated due to update costs and Bastion DLC that was free elsewhere, re uired a fee on XBL. Good job chumps, keep on supporting that lichen sclerotic, epispadic, herpetic, phimotic, priaspismic microsoft d*ck...maybe you'll get to savour some when a few drops run down your legs.

Lol. Sony isn't anywhere near Steam when it comes to supporting indie developers. Hell, no consoles are. If anything, MS probably supports the indie sceen the most out of the big 3. They've released C# and XNA, AppHub, Windows Phone Development Tools, and Kinect for PC SDK, to say nothing of the freely available DirectX SDK.

They just suck at making a convincing push with the 360; the Indie Games section of the Marketplace needs a huge revamp if it's going to attract any serious indie developer and this $40,000 for a patch nonsense has to go.

Let's be clear - indie success happens primarily on PC. None of consoles really promote a vibrant indie games market.

Sony just funded a couple of millions for indie games. I'm not saying Sony is perfect either but it's miles ahead of Microsoft in treating their devs.

Can you even read? Basically, Phil is saying Micro$oft is also extorting them to even release exclusively on their platform. No incentives or freebies, just missing out on more sales to stay exclusive.

When you put it like this it sounds very altruistic, but when you consider the reasons behind all those decisions - they are in support of MS's main product - Windows. If it wasn't for DirectX, an alternative would be used - one, which would be a lot more portable, like OpenGL for example. Free dev tools and SDKs are not charity - it's a way to attract people to a platform ...

Here's what Robot Entertainment representative said regarding Orcs Must Die 2:

OMD2 is a PC exclusive.
We were really happy with the enthusiasm of the XBLA community, but ultimately it was a pretty small group compared to our PC Community. It's unfortunate, but it requires a significant amount of time and resources to port the game to XBLA.

Whassup lemmons? I thought XBLA was the greatest thing ever, the major selling point of Xbox these days, but you can't even muster more people than the pirate ridden PC? Are you too busy with retail exclusives ... ???!!?!??? Hahahaahahahaahahahahah, what A JOKE !

Probably got tired of no one ever having heard about their games while XBLA devs are basically the equivalent of rockstars. Phil Fish is probably swimming in vag.

Sony are the best way to go for indie developers.

DrTrafalgarLaw

You do know that it also costs 40k$ on PSN too? Tim Schafer revealed that earlier this year. There is a reason why EA cancelled the patch for PS3 version of Brütal Legend that would've fixed the save bug. It was ready and all.

Also, Sony charges publishers for any use of PSN bandwidth. When users download games, demos, DLC or anything from PSN, publishers or developers have to pay Sony.

Best places for indie devs are PC, IOS and Android.

This is an advantage because...

1. It gives M$ more money

2. It gives dev's incentive to do it right the first time

Its a way for microsoft to push quality control and make money in 1 go. Either the game comes out and and only gets patched once, using the freebie patch, or a terrible dev releases a duece and its patched many times and microsft gets money.

win win for microfter, better if they don't need a patch but cashing in if they do.

http://2dboy.com/2011/10/03/xbla/ Maybe you should read this article on how bad things are on XBL. A survey ask to 200 indie developers, showed that MS is basically horrible when it come to its policies. While sony wasn't the best company compare to MS Sony was great. From those 200 developers. 0% voted that it was very easy to work with MS,16% votes So-so basically normal,36% voted it was very difficult to work with MS,and a whooping 48% voted it was down right Excruciating. Now see those same for sony, which was the best of the 3 platform developers i may add. 10% voted for been very easy,52% voted So so (normal),24% voted it was difficult and only 14% voted it was Excruciating. So basically 84% of those developer basically what 168 developer out of the 200 voted that it was difficult or excruciating to work with MS,first graph actually show how development is shifting from XBL to PSN as sony push the digital market more.

lol Warner it wouldn't have been fixed with in 2 weeks it would have been released pirated to hell in back. the game was broken upon release, user out cry, patch, then more user outcry as the patch broke games then another patch would have to be released and likely another one after that.

The developer delivered a broken game, then a broken patch and they did it all in 4 years... most other developers would have taken 2 to release a game like fez that actually worked.
