I don't get why people are making this out to be bad. It is't a game console, it's a game console with other features that make it a family entertainment center (same for the PS3).

I'm sure MS (and Sony) have felt this way for quite a while, even before their motion control outings.

-Snooze-

Bad timing. That's why.

Had MS said this at the height of 360 support, no one would have minded. Infact they'd be happy MS were trying to improve each aspect of the console.

However releasing such a statement at a time when MS is seemingly fully focused on a more casual audience, worrys Xbox owners. Afterall they didn't buy the GAMES CONSOLE, to then be told games would be taking a back seat to family fun, and movies,

Yeah, this BTW.

"For over five years millions of gamers have enjoyed the Xbox 360 as a games console. But, according to the man who runs Microsoft, it's not a games console at all.

It is, instead, a "family entertainment centre" – according to CEO Steve Ballmer.

"Xbox isn't a gaming console," he declared to theUSA Today. "Xbox is a family entertainment centre. It's a place to socialise. It's a place to watch TV. We have Hulu coming. It's the only system where you are the controller. Your voice, your gestures, your body."

Ballmer said Xbox and the eight million selling motion-sensing add-on Kinect are where the "consumer heat" is.

"I think about my own family," he said. "My wife used to say, 'No, no, that's the machine the boys use,' and now she says, 'Yeah, I want to go watch movies. Let's go play the dance game.'

"It opens up accessibility to family entertainment because with the Kinect, you control these systems with your body, with your voice. We've opened up the world of content in TV, movies. You just sit there and say 'Xbox' or 'play movie'."

He added: "You go to your average 15-year-old boy, and he will say, 'I'll take an Xbox.' I want that average 15-year-old girl as excited about the Kinect, and we haven't done as good a job drawing in that broader set of demographics."

Microsoft has in recent years attempted to broaden the appeal of the Xbox 360 console with applications focused on non-gaming activities. In the UK, the Xbox 360 features the Sky Player, Last.fm, Facebook and Twitter integration and film and music streaming."

Xbox 360 a family entertainment console?

Dad: Hey, 6 year old son, let's go kill us some Necromorphs!

Son: Sure thing, Pops!

Mom: As long as I get to stomp their limbs off!

It's not a family entertainment center. The majority of the online content is M rated or whatever. Besides, when a console ceases to be about gaming, something's wrong.

That's why I feel people are making too big of a deal out of it. They're just words for marketing. People can be mad at MS for seemingly not having a good exclusive line up this year, but they probably felt that way long before this marketing statement came along. It's just like beating a dead horse imo.

I don't see the big deal in saying this, it's not like it's going to be their new slogan or something

No different than what Sony tried to call the PS3, a home entertainment system.

They can call it whatever they want, but I wouldn't call this as family-appropriate:

If it is family, I like family.

but i don't recall sony stating that the ps3 "isn't a gaming console", however, they did state that" it's not ONLY a gaming console". Big difference when the "ONLY" is missing.

Ahh it all makes perfect sense now, the 360 being THE CORE gamers console at the start of this generation was just a fluke, and this newer, much more casual image that Microsoft now has is their true identity and was their intention all along.

Ohk then, I'll be back on later after watching ESPN, updating my twitter and facebook, then streaming a movie on netflix, the wonders of modern gaming.
