Bad news for Publishers as most pc gamers don't actually buy games unless forced.
Which is wrong.
Yeah I'm sure all them 150 million accounts have access to mid-high end PCs that can play demanding games.
I was able to play The Witcher 3 on its launch day on my very old gaming laptop using 560M. Ran at 1280x1064 on medium settings around 20-25FPS. It was amazing to me that my old gaming laptop was able to play it way below minimum requirements. Demanding games don't mean only mid-high end PCs can play them. It is why graphics settings exist. The true beauty of PC gaming.
I can relate. My build of FX 6300 with R9 380 is by all accounts considerably below the minimum requirements for the new Doom, going by what's listed on Steam. I figured I could only play the game on 640p, all the lowest settings, and hoping for 20 fps.
But I downloaded the demo and much to my surprise, was able to play the game at a full 1080, Med/High settings, and still getting a silky smooth 70 fps average (rarely getting below 55). And let me tell you, even not "maxed out" this game is a feast for the eyes. Now maybe I don't know what I'm missing on the Ultra, but damn, does this game deliver the eye candy even on the mix of Med and High :D
Still, those "official" requirements never seem to accurately correlate gaming performance to the range of hardware specs. And if you can't use these listing to gauge your expected experience, just what can you rely on?
@lordlors: in all honesty, why would you want to play them on anything below high?
At that time I haven't yet bought the gaming laptop I'm currently using, an Alienware 15 inch 970M. And if you want to know why I'm using a gaming laptop, I live in a very cramped room in Tokyo with absolutely no space for a desktop (I have too many books, clothes, appliances, etc. as it is in a 13sq m room that includes a bathtub, toilet and an utterly tiny kitchen) and I leave Japan 2-3 times a year (wouldn't want to be unable to play games for 1 month if I had desktop here in Japan). Besides, my school requires me to bring laptop. Having a gaming laptop is a win-win situation for me.
The point that should be taken here; while it's great if you can play the ultimate experience (or close enough to it) PC gaming shouldn't be defined by that narrow standard. Let's not perpetrate the myth that PC gaming "only counts" if it's on max settings, that leads to the cost myths. Many gamers are confined by their budget, and games should be accessible for that market, while still providing benefits to the more advantaged.
It's the beauty of PC gaming that it's flexible in so many ways, and can be entered at the price point of your means and/or choosing.
Also it should be pointed out that playing on Med is still better than most console games, especially when not being limited to 30 fps.
@mcpanties:
Since when was idea of people going to pc from consoles a good thing anyway? That spells alot of trouble for console game developers.
This isn't irrefutable proof, but I am seeing more and more posts about console gamers saying they are either switching to PC or already having made the switch. I converted a few of my friends to PC from console, actually. They love it.
Well yes. There is really very little reason to be a console gamer imo. If Nintendo would hurry up and fail enough be go 3rd party and go on Steam, I would most likely never buy a console again.
Nintendo on Steam.......drool.
If you are a gaming enthusiast, you basically are playing lesser versions of games for not playing on the PC. The ways in which the PC is superior aren't even worthy of debate. I get that you want to play with your friends and have preferences and blah blah, but accept the fact that the lions share of games today come on everything, and as a result a lions share of the games today look and play better on the PC. Throw in the customization options of a PC and the part where it has a way bigger library to offset the lack of "triple A exclusives", and yeah it's not really close in terms of what's a better platform.
The consoles without their exclusives are shittier gaming machines. And these days they get less exclusives than they used to.

That would be like Canada surrendering to the United States and annexed into the latter. Not going to happen.
BECAUSE eeveryone owns a PC by default..
some people buy high end PC to work ..... but eventualy plays game on it..
and spider solitaitare, minesweeper and othe flash game ......IS ALSO A GAME.
geezzzzz

One of my friends who was always a console owner never once thought he would care about PC gaming. Then he saw one his favorite games (skyrim) fully modded on the PC. It completely changed his views on PC gaming and its now something he's interested in pursuing.
I honestly do not know how some people can play games like Thief, The evil within, Gears of War UE on consoles...they run like absolute shit to the point where it is downright unplayable. Then you have games like Halo 5 which suppossedly runs at a 'smooth' 60fps but there's microstutter everywhere. Quantum break should be called quantum flop or quantum blur... I can understand those who have a PS4 cause unlike the xbone their exclusives are actually playable and of high quality. PC FTW...
Because most gamers dont actually give a shit about 60 fps. Like, 95% of gamers aren't FPS elitists. So it doesnt bother most of us to play games at 30 or so fps.
Agreed. I am a major Halo fanboy. If he's getting "microstutter" (WTF?) then it's his console, connection or something. Halo 5 doesn't have this problem in my apartment. And Gears UE runs just as well as Uncharted 4 which he claimed was a smooth 30 fps the other day. Ghost just come out of the closet already. You're a cow when it comes to consoles.
Basically without their so called exclusives, there is very little reason to play on consoles rather than a PC and those exclusives are becoming less and less.
Duh, 20 fps in low with bad online (which you must pay for) just doesn't cut it, especially with having to now pay $500-600 every 3 years for a new system upgrade. More costly hardware and software, for an objectively inferior experience.
Well more like 300-400 every 8 or 9 years. Usually you're just a fool if you buy a new console within the first few months or even a year of it being released. There is almost never a reason to. But still. A mighty difference compared to what you posted. Which, from what ive seen, actually seems to beat PC's constant upgrading. The mid gen systems and slims are unnecessary for the normal gaming experience, so those dont count.
I'm doing this soon too will probably end up buying one of the consoles late during the generation for cheap just to play some of the exclusives.
Heck i think Sony will go MS way and have their own digital market on PC to sell their first party games on pc.
There's no point getting a xbone since they have no exclusives, the PS4 on the other hand has The Last of Us, Uncharted 4, Uncharted trilogy, Bloodborne, Horizon etc... All fucking amazing games. I prefer to have just the one system but I simply can't ignore the PS4 when they have qualities like the titles i've listed.
How do you know Horizon is a "fucking amazing game"? It doesn't come out until Feb 2017? And TLOU, Uncharted collection aren't exclusive.
Uncharted trilogy and Last of us are on the ps3 too, so his point is moot there. Although Horizon looks pretty amazing, that doesnt count for much until its out. And i still dont get the hype over TLOU.

They do count. I'm talking about the best experience.
For the best console experience you will have to shell out $500 every 3-4 years, on top of ~$150 total for online in those years. If you would just spend the same cash on upgrading PC, you would be playing the better version of games and better online.

Ok, once again, even if we talk about the Xbox one S, the first mid gen console to date that i know of that actually improves the gaming experience, its 300 to 400 bucks. Not 600. Not 500. The previous slims certainly do not count, considering they didnt really improve anything but size. And if we go from first release of the 360 to Xbox one s, thats about 11 years if im not mistaken. 300 to 400 bucks after 11 years is entirely acceptable. And yes online costs money, but its entirely worth it for the Games with Gold. I dont know about PS+, but Xbox's free games are generally worth it. And you get 4 a month. So you pay 60 bucks a year and you get online, deals with gold(Which are usually pretty damn decent), and around 40 to 50 games a year thanks to backwards compatibility now.
Seems perfectly acceptable to me when you actually look at it without a bias.
Nice to see my thread with actual experience with PC's get locked while this pathetic try of a PC circle jerk sticks around.
Having switched from a lifetime console gamer to pc in 3 years ago, I like pc gaming way better. However, I want optimization to be way better than it is. Consoles have lower capabilities, but devs optimize the games for that console. Too often the pc version gets dumbed down, ported, or released in a broken state. I am so hoping that Deus Ex is not broken or unoptimized tomorrow.
Oh this again lol, sure thing consoles are dying yadda yadda yadda.
I'd say that nobody is saying that, but sure enough some idiot will post and prove me wrong lol.
I do believe that eventually consoles will phase out. The idea of buying multiple closed systems to play specific games or use specific services is outdated and kind of silly when you think about it. But of course we're not there yet, consoles are doing fine, and in many ways they're still necessary for the growth of this industry. I think consoles still have plenty of room to grow before they start to decline. I just don't see this 1980's idea of gaming platforms carrying on as some endless cycle, it's going to give eventually.
More specific to the topic though, yeah, a shit load of people are transitioning to PC. Some are abandoning consoles in full while others are just adding PC to the mix. With the current state of the industry you can't really blame them.
Even on our own little forum here it's pretty evident. I was primarily a console gamer for nearly 30 years, PC was a background platform for me. Now it's the other way around, 99+% of my gaming is on PC and consoles are just there for those rare instances in which a good exclusive comes out. This is the way it is for many people now. And it's kind of funny when you see some newer users around here complaining that SW is overrun with "Hermits", not even realizing that most of these guys were all about the consoles not too long ago.
It's only practical man. You have all these systems offering pretty much the same games. Difference being, that one system runs them much better than the others, has many more games than the others, much more variety than the others, and on top of that has all the freedom you could ask for. At a certain point it just comes down to a matter of price.
@mcpanties:
Since when was idea of people going to pc from consoles a good thing anyway? That spells alot of trouble for console game developers.
Its a good thing because i don't want developers that only make games for consoles, to exist. Its bad for the whole gaming industry.
Haven't touched my consoles since I built a PC. How young and naive I was.
Indeed. They way i see it is that as kids we didn't know better so we just bought a console. As i grew older i wanted to try this thing that people called PC and i haven't touched my ps3 ever since
Or maybe its all just preference. And though the PC offers more power, and choice in some cases, its certainly more expensive in the long run.
Elitism to any specific type of gaming doesnt look good on anyone.
Except mobile gaming. **** that.
If you are truly a hardcore gamer that wants to play games without compromise... PC is the only option as your primary gaming platform. The console experience is shit. Garbage frame rates, lowered graphics, closed/restricted platform, pay for online, etc.. Why settle for the half-ass and inferior experience? Just play games on PC the way you want. M+KB or controller. Desk or couch. It is the most powerful and versatile platform. If you are not PC gaming, you are not getting the proper experience.

This man speaks the truth.
Well I have always been a console gamer. But recently I don't know why I started looking for a gaming laptop and using steam and all. I also read in some forums that it is better if you build your gaming PC but I think I might save up and get a gaming laptop later on.

Oh don't do this please , laptop never been a good alternative for desktop PC especially when it comes to gaming , it's way more expensive and doesn't have the equal performance

Well if you have the extra cash to spend then actually its nice to you know, be able to game anywhere you like.
There was once i took my laptop and gamed on my balcony which overlooks a nice garden and with the sunset and all, it was just brilliant. Fresh air finally :D
I do have a gaming pc however and thats always a better choice.
@the_master_race: as someone who bought a gaming laptop i second this. unless you absolutely need the portability (as in its either a gaming laptop or no PC gaming) dont get a laptop for gaming. in terms of bang per buck they are woeful and their upgradability is very poor.
Yeah your right TC my grandparents switched from Wii to Candy Crush and Angry Birds, many more like them.
Don't get me wrong I love some of the rigs you guys have but most don't.
I hate all the BS that goes with it. Having to change things, update this, turn this up or down, playing with keyboard and mouse etc.
There are over 80 million that prefer consoles. You do your thing, we will do ours. Most of us don't really want to play with you weirdo's anyway, or the weird games you guys go nuts over.

I live in a very cramped room in Tokyo with absolutely no space for a desktop (I have too many books, clothes, appliances, etc. as it is in a 13sq m room that includes a bathtub, toilet and an utterly tiny kitchen) and I leave Japan 2-3 times a year (wouldn't want to be unable to play games for 1 month if I had desktop here in Japan). @lordlors: yep for some ppl like you and those who travel a lot , laptop and handhelds are the best .....who am I kidding , only options but if you got your own TV , your own couch and a roof over your head , buying a gaming laptop is waste of money

Because to most gamers, unplayable means unplayable. Not 720p or 30 fps. Most games play just fine on console.

I seriously wish desktop was a viable option for me. Maybe in the future when I move to a bigger place and got more money. Oddly enough, I see a couple of my Japanese classmates having a gaming laptop but barely use it for gaming. Gaming laptops are specialized for people needing portability and little space. Not to mention I could go wherever I want and use heavy game dev apps like Maya, Unreal Engine 4, etc. and work. I'm just sick of hearing people say those who own gaming laptops are stupid, gaming laptops are a complete waste of money, etc. I thought it would have been already common sense that a gaming desktop would be superior over a gaming laptop in performance and the inability to upgrade for laptops but no people have to repeat saying it over and over when a gaming laptop is talked about. It should be about the need for portability not performance when talking about gaming laptops.
so because the ps4 hasnt sold in <3 years what ps2 sold in >15 "more and more people are moving to PC"? sounds like typical hermit logic. shit is just sad. i blame the current schooling system and bad parenting
the biggest reason that people are moving over to PC is that consoles have lost their function. Anything you can do on a console you can do on a PC better.
more and more people arent moving to pc, the rate at which ps4 is selling is proof of that.
is that why they have to increase the price of psn? Is that why ps4 sales are half of what ps3 sales was and xbox 360 was the best selling console at that time
Bad news for Publishers as most pc gamers don't actually buy games unless forced.
Which is wrong.
Thats why THE UNCRACKED FIFA 16 sold 10 million copies!!
100% of the 10 mil torrenters rushed out and bought the game!!
