Because it looks like rubbish in screenshots due to the graphics. People take one look at the back of the box and dont want it. Too bad. Great game.http://kotaku.com/5259924/grand-theft-auto-chinatown-wars-second-month-sales-drop-in-npd+pds

The reason its not selling well is because it wasn't advertised well, so a lot of people that would of bought it didn't know it was even out. I was talking to some friends the other day who are fans of grand theft auto and mentioned the game and they didn't even know the game existed, so they went out and got it that day XD.http://kotaku.com/5259924/grand-theft-auto-chinatown-wars-second-month-sales-drop-in-npd+pds

Looks like R* won't be making anymore GTAs for the DS.
Lionheart08
Thats what I was thinking
It was worth a try though
That won't bother me either. I will be getting Chinatown because it is there to get and is a good game, but it wouldn't have bothered me one bit if a GTA game was never made for the DS. That's what I have a PC and soon a PS3 for.Looks like R* won't be making anymore GTAs for the DS.

so did you read the part where analysts say if it doesn't sell over 40k in April it will have flopped and will show bad signs for future sales? And then read it surpassed 40k by 34k? It sold 74k in April bringing it to a total of near 500k worldwide.that isn't bad at all. no one should expect GTAIV numbers for this game, its great too
its selling, it will keep selling

Didn't the PSP GTA games perform around the same sales-wise? Not even close, I think both psp GTA games sold at least a million, with the first one selling like 2 millionEdit: vgchartz says first GTA psp sold 5 million, second sold 3 million
so a game that has sold 450,000 copies in only 8 weeks and still selling around 30k to 40k worldwide weekly is a flop lol i don't understand you people
Really, with the DS? With the GTA title? Saying a million seller is a sales flop is one thing but selling under 500k on the DS with something as major as GTA is VERY unimpressiveso a game that has sold 450,000 copies in only 8 weeks and still selling around 30k to 40k worldwide weekly is a flop lol i don't understand you people

In the first two months?More proof game sales aren't based off quality, but on publicity and casual appeal. munu9
It is like the biblical saying of throwing pearls before pigs, as pigs would not appreciate the value of something precious like pearls. Most people in the world would care little about what some of us think as "quality" video games, as their standards of "quality' differs from us. As sales does not equal quality, the reverse can also be the same.
Even though Chinatown Wars has good reviews does not compell me to purchase it, as games of its kind do not appeal to my tastes. I do not buy games because they are "critically acclaimed" or win awards, but if they appeal to me.
[QUOTE="sherlock99"]Really, with the DS? With the GTA title? Wow seems I was right. They sold about the same during the first two month periods. So the question is: why are some people making a big deal about sales of this game?[QUOTE="sherlock99"]

Didn't the PSP GTA games perform around the same sales-wise? No PSP Liberty city Stories sold 5million copies, it sold the same amount the gta cw did for two months in one week on the psp! PSP Vice city Stories sold 2.5 million copies! -Thats over 7.5 million sales for psp gta.....they would be moronic not to release a new one on psp. And last I read was that Sony was in talks with them. We can only hope. I want a new psp gta! It should happen as long as M$ isn't bribing them to stop it.http://kotaku.com/5259924/grand-theft-auto-chinatown-wars-second-month-sales-drop-in-npd+pds

Since when has anyone cared about the sales of GTA Chinatown Wars? It's a shame to see it sell so little. I guess R* will just stick to the PSP for future handheld GTA games.
The reason it didn't sell well is that same reason Mad World didn't sell well on the Wii...it's the DEMOGRAPH.
Devs need to realize who the vast majority of DS and Wii owners are, or rather who they're not. They are for the most part NOT hardcore gamers. It doesn't matter how good the game is as we all know that Chinatown Wars got amazing reviews. It's simply not the type of game that most DS owners buy.

true this, people who bought GTA CW are 18 & above, while look at the owners of DS & Wii, they were meant to target casual gamers, younger people buy it mostly so this game cant sell that well...
guys its selling nearly at the same rate the second GTA on PSP sold
darth-pyschosis
A little less, yeah.

The problem is that CW had a drastic drop in the last two weeks, something VCS hadn't.
Nonetheless, if we consider a lot of DS games have showed constant sales for quite a long time, this news aren't that bad.
The question isn't whether this game will make it's money back because it obviously will. If it keeps selling 60-80K every month it will eventually sell enough.
The question is if any other third party dev will make an M rated DS game. If GTA barely makes money what chance would they have with a new M rated IP on the system?
I'm not saying another M rated game won't be released on the DS and that it won't sell. I'm only saying that devs looks at the GTA:CW numbers in a very cynical way.
ninty just doesn't sell mature core games...just accept it and move on....just like i accept that ms is going to keep buying sloppy second franchises that were made popular on sony consoles and buying a 360 automatically means i have to buy another one after 3 years....and i have to accept sony ceo's are boneheads...and sony isn't going to get first place...and 99% sure that its going to stay last in the console race
For some reason it seems like a lot of GTA fans aren't buying it just because its 2D. In my group of gamers I'm the only one thats bought it and we're all big GTA fans. When I asked my friends why they're not interested in it they said stuff like "it feels like a step back" and "it was scaled down and gimped to run on DS." I much prefer GTA:CW to the PSP GTA's because it has a unique identity. Liberty/Vice City Stories were cool in their own way but they were exactly the same as the PS2 games and didn't feel fresh.
There seems to be only 1 explanation. The majority of GTA fans are the biggest graphic whores on earth and will pass on a given opportunity to play the best GTA by far since Vice City all because the graphics arent up to snuff.
Dahaka-UK
this !
what stops the GTA fans buying the ds version ?
the ds is cheap
the library is awesome
only the graphics are not on paar with the console version :|
those are the same people bash the wii for its graphics and unable too see that games can be good even if they look like last gen games
what stops the GTA fans buying the ds version ?habkeinbockI'm betting most GTA fans don't own a DS in the first place. I mean, who would have expected three years ago that the highest rated portable GTA would be on the DS?
I plan on getting this game, so add 1 to those sales. :P[QUOTE="clubsammich91"]

That's the reason why I and a lot of my friends didn't buy it.
It is a step back. GTAIV was a living and breathing city, GTA:CW is not. I am well aware that it has a lot of the stuff GTAIV has but that doesn't change the fact that the game isn't the same experience as it's big brother. I don't play GTA game to enjoy the bad story the repetitive missions or the buggy AI. I enjoy GTA games for the Sandbox feel of driving around in a living city. That is something that the DS can not handle.
I'm not saying the game is bad because frankly the reviews state the opposite, it's a superb game. It's just not the game I want to play on the DS or the game I want GTA to be. It would be like having a 2D Gears game on the DS like Contra. It could be a kick-ass game and I would probably buy it but it would not be the game that most Gears fans want.

Nintendo doesn't = Hard core. :P
Wish devs would see this. If your going to make a good casual game... Your going to make out big. You make anything like Sony or MS on a Nintendo system your in for disappointment.
