i wasn't expecting much from Far Cry 2, but it was the most disappointing game I've played this gen because when I got into the game it gave me so much hope. I like that there isn't a cheating aimer that tells you when your gun is over an enemy. The combat feels real and gritty because of it, and you really have to use your eyes. The game has truly inspired atmospherics. People say the visuals are technically impressive but I don't really think so. There are very few open areas. It's all the incredible art style and THICK atmosphere. The problems start to bog down the game though. The AI acts really human-like, but they can see through foliage and like someone else said, they respawn. It's frustrating because it would be nice to get a sense of progress by being able to clear out a road that you use a lot. It takes away from the immersion that the visual style worked so hard to create so brilliantly. I'll come out and say it: Far Cry 2 has the best atmosphere of any game this gen. I haven't played fallout 3 though, and that looks pretty atmospheric as well.
GTA4 is just flat out disappointing. I expecting more from the plot, from the extras, from the cheats, and from the game world. Messing with the civilians was still great, and props to them. It's disappointing that the star level tops out at federal police. The game is still very fun, but I was expecting more, especially after Gamespot's review, which makes me wonder what goes into a writing a review. The game was great but there was plenty to mark it down with and 9.5 is still a great score.
i have to defend MGS4. I expected little from the game but I got so much. The cutscenes were too long but there was a lot of interesting material there, and the gameplay is a great mix of stealth and action. Once you learn it, it's so simplistic, and the game gives you so many toys to play with . Great AI. Great level design. Great boss battles. Gameplay is the most important part of a game by far with me, so some longwinded cutscenes are easily forgiven
