I always hear people say how they hate motion blur and say how its a cheap trick, but to be honest i think motion blur looks great. Yes it is true motion blur can be used to cover up textures, example: killzone 2 (though the later builds the textures are pretty good for a console game).

but when i play crysis i find the motion blur adds to the immersion into the game, makes the game appear smooth, and even if it is to cover up bad textures, (not in crysis of course), i still find it looks great.

so up to you to decide

Yes to motion Blur? Why?

No to motion Blur? Why?

its not bad, in consoles where you kinda need them its good but on PC i prefer just hitting up some good old AA and AF.

If it works then I'm not fussy. If it's used incorectly then that's a problem. Most of the time I'm ok with motion blur though.

I don't like it.

Although it is a cool effect, it makes my eyes hurt and I feel a little dizzy or sick after a litte while. Roller coastes don't bother me, but that does for some reason.

it maybe personal preference, but for a game like crysis which needs no motion blur, i sitll prefer to have it maxed out, ontop of the AA/AF, but the part about motion blur on consoles i completely agree, i mean if it looks better 'do it'.

I'm just assuming that the only ones that really think motion blur is not good are fanboys trying to mark down KZ2. I mean, if Guerilla Games wanted to, I believe they could take out motion blur and add in hi-rez textures instead. But, instead, they decided to keep motion blur.

I'm pretty sure Mirror's Edge used bloom alot, and it made me very tired playing it. Constant blasts of akward light all over the place. Frys the brain.

true, a lot of the anti-motion blur movement was around killzone 2 using motion blur... but then again some people (not fanboys) just dont like it.

I personally like motion blur. It makes it feel more realistic or 'immersive.'

But "pretty good for a console game"[when referring to textures]? They're great for a console game if you compare it to GeoW2 or Halo. On a more sarcastic note, it's motion blur doesn't cover up textures becausethere aren't any lacking textures to be had. :P

I personally could do without the motion blur. Games like Blue Dragon use it a bit too much.

I have no idea what I'm talking about, but I'm going to take a stab in the dark anyway. Mabye if instead of using the processing power to deal with motion blur effects, they could instead use it to display higher resolution textures? I can't imagine motion blur actually uses much anyway, it's been used for such a long time now it must be a huge trade off for what it's worth.

And the closer you come to complete disorentation. Some games have motion blur so strong it actually makes you dizzy. Motion blur combined with bloom is like auto daze. i.e Mirror's Edge.

Though not as bad as Vice City (PS2), Mass Effect's motion blur was awful, though it wasn't nearly as bad as that "grain" effect.

Some games have okay motion blur (Killzone 2). But in some of them, it's just annoying (Mass Effect, Blue Dragon). Crysis has been the only game with motion blur that I ever thought really added anything to the game, but that's not to say that it's horrible in everything else.

Yeah you're being way too defensive about Killzone. Some people just don't like the blur, as it decreases your vision of things. And the PS3 is kind of limited by its RAM which has a lot to do with textures. So Guerilla compensated properly with motion blur. Really smart move by them actually.

Exactly. The reason things like lens flare and other effects have such a bad reputation is because developers overuse them. If blur is used properly it can be awesome. If it's implemented with a heavy hand it's terrible.

Like slow motion.

I dont think there should be motion blur when your character is running. Unless theyre moving at a incredible speed. Like a super hero speed. That way is fine. Like in a car going really fast. But if your just running. ahh, comon?

You notice it much more when watching videos of a game as opposed to playing it.

I like it, gives a nice sense of speed.

not true. A Fullscreen cinematic motion blur, ala Crysis and Killzone 2 is actually draining some significant processing power(but not really RAM which is what ultimately ends up limiting the KZ2 textures)

KZ2 does it a bit too much, but they manner it does is it technically not reducing the load on the processor, infact it does the opposite(only it helps achieve their cinematic vision of the game).

You are confusing it with just a blurring effect that results from the processor doing crude and general rendering as fast as possible without a huge worry about the overall quality(ala GTA4 on the 360 and Mass Effect).

Full Screen Cinematic Motion Blur is actually a complicated and very high end technology with blurring based upon movement, distance and other factors. It basically does per-pixel calculation for the blurring effect to result in a high quality and highly cinematic image.

Exactly, it all depends on how its used. If I make fast motions and things blur it is fine, but when they use it when there is any movement no matter how slow it bugs the heck out of me? Slowly turn your head to one side once and tell me if everything you see suddenly becomes too blurry to make out any detail.

Motion blur is great when USED RIGHT...its realistic, vision blurs when there is fast movement. Killzone 2 does it great, IMO. Eyezonmii
Actually, that's one of my issues. If the game is third person(where you are supposed to be viewing it from a camera)then using effects that would happen to a camera is fine...but killzone is supposed to be through the character's eyes, not from another vantage point, and cinematic effects that happen with cameras but not eyes seems out of place IMO.
