MS plan to topple Sony....quite ingenious.

Sony tends to release a new console every 6 years. PS1 = 1994, PS2 = 2000, PS3 2006. PS4 will very likely launch on holiday 2012. It wont be any sooner because Sony surely wants to get the most out of PS3.

Xbox had a 4 year cycle (2001-2005). It is rumored that MS will launch the next xbox in a 5 year cycle. This suggests holiday 2010.

This would give MS a 2 YEAR jump on Sony. Nintendo is irrelevant as MS clearly has its eyes on Sony. This will force Sony to either rush the PS4 and cut short the PS3. The PS1 and PS2 had 10 year cycles no problem, but PS3 is in third, and is a financial black hole. The next Xbox will cut it short.

Now, we are at a point where graphics wont be getting much better. Even if PS4 has better graphics power then the 2 year younger Xbox, the games will still look similar....only the most hardcore will see a difference. In the 2 years, MS will have massive dev support, devs will be experienced and will yet again make Xbox games and port them down to the PS4.

I also think MS will elarn from cows this gen....by making all the changes based on cow complaints. There will be a standard harddrive, wifi, reliability, and an internal bluray player. Live will still cost money but MS will obviously include new features to justify it.

That's not all that ingenious. :| And Sony has stated they have a ten year plan for the PS3. Whether they keep to that or not is up for debate.

Besides, who knows how much powerful graphics will get by next gen or how many people will want to jump on to the next gen so quickly, etc. Many factors... but we'll see what happens I guess.

Very true. Also, releasing that early ahead of the competition allows them to release hardware 2 years more advanced. They would be better off releasing just a year ahead but this time ensuring the hardware is ready for release and they have designed the best console they possibly could. Do that and still release a year ahead would be a much better game plan if you ask me.

I get that they will have the advantage of 2 years maybe, but still, what if Microsoft decides to give more thorough hardware testing to avoid the RRoD for the next gen and it takes 2 years of testing?

How can you fully tell that their dev support will be great?

Microsoft's 1st party devs aren't so hot.

Plus, how are we sure that more devs won't take the lazy way out, knowing their way around the Xbox360, PS3, and Wii? Why risk the money to create a game for the new console, that might not even work?

I personally, would play it safe and create games for the 7th gen until all the consoles were out for at least a year. Make sure I can get as much money out of those consoles so I have a financial net for the 8th gen.

Otherwise, I risk losing all my money.

This is all speculation, but Microsoft would be smart to release their next console at least a year ahead. They got a lot of criticism for rushing the 360 out first, but let's face it, they gained a lot of developer support in that first year. The 360 would not be the console it is today without that head start. If the next Xbox has another year to itself, Sony might not be able to make up the lost ground. They're not the powerhouse they once were.

In the end, I believe that is how the next generation will play out. Sony has taken huge losses on the PS3, and they aren't in the position to release their next console so soon. They need to make that money back. Microsoft is in a good position to take the generation.

It's not a flawed theory, it's a proven one. Look at how much dev support Microsoft has gained in just one generation. Everyone will mention the Dreamcast, but Sega was a dying company going into the generation. Microsoft hasn't seen rough times in, well... forever.
