Sony tends to release a new console every 6 years. PS1 = 1994, PS2 = 2000, PS3 2006. PS4 will very likely launch on holiday 2012. It wont be any sooner because Sony surely wants to get the most out of PS3.

I personally, would play it safe and create games for the 7th gen until all the consoles were out for at least a year. Make sure I can get as much money out of those consoles so I have a financial net for the 8th gen.

It's not a flawed theory, it's a proven one. Look at how much dev support Microsoft has gained in just one generation. Everyone will mention the Dreamcast, but Sega was a dying company going into the generation. Microsoft hasn't seen rough times in, well... forever.

I know that Microsoft has gained a lot of dev support. Anyone who says otherwise needs to do some more research.

However, you can only depend on 3rd party devs for so long. They are kinda like temporary thing. Yeah, some may last for years, even generations, but they are always free to do as they please. They could leave if they don't like the new architecture, and that could cause problems. 1st party devs might be able to save them incase the architecture doesn't turn out to be very easy.

I agree, but somethign in my gut tells me that next generation, SOny will go after casuals and fly the way of Nintendo to try and get marketshare back from them. One thing to notice is that it really wouldn't be well for business as far as game wise to release a system so much earlier than the competition. Why? Because all of a sudden you go from a 30-40 million userbase to one that is 0.

What developer wants to put out a game with a brand new userbase, when all the other companies may have 50+ million at the same time.

The 360 struggled with this its very first year out the gate. Very few new IPs, and most the games were watered down ports of last gen games.

Going out two years ahead of the competition would almost be terrible for the games to come out. All you would see for two years would be watered down ports.

Lets say 2010 for the new Xbox. Sony can try to compete with it head on by launching a console within a year later or simply wait. Lets say they wait till 2013 to release the PS4. Depending on how much better it is and if they have the software to back it up, they could simply just wait till they had a MASSIVE strike force of software and competative priced console.
I would like to add that it took the 360 over a year to start selling more then the PS2. So if they can just get the PS3 ball really rolling and keep it in therea few extra rounds, they could outdo MS that way.

As you said Graphics wont improve much more (I don't know if thats going to turn out true or not, but because its your thread I will play by your rules), so Gamers don't have as much reason to just into The Next Gen when ever it comes... Microsoft can release there system when ever they want and the PS3 would look like an even sweeter deal because it would then have a lower price point...

The only thing sony needs to dominate Microsoft is for Microsoft to drop the 360 as fast as they did the original (which is unlikely)... If Microsoft dropped the 360 they would no longer and a Cheap entrance into video games like the Ps2 was for the PS3... The PS3 will then become the PS2 of Next Gen...

That is if there is not that big of a Graphics upgrade which would leave a lot of gamers not wanting to jump into Next Gen gaming at the time where it is most expensive...
