Sony always redesign their models idiot is how you cut manufacturing cost not eating a $70 price drop + giving 2 free games + giving $50 back as well in a card,and the slim PS3 didn't hit until 2009 3 years after,MS has been selling the xbox one under $500 since Ferbruary 22 when they started selling the Titanfall bundle with Kinect for $449 and in Uk dropped the price as well.
There is a difference between what sony did when they redesign the PS4 and what MS did this pass holiday,the xbox one still cost MS a pretty penny to produce and they eat a loss,Sony lower it by changing the inside components,smaller Board,smaller CPU and GPU,smaller case,smaller fan.
Sony has been redesigning consoles before the xbox were even here and desperation wasn't the reason,when sony introduced the PSone they weren't losing vs Nintendo or Sega,they already won the generation,it was a simple way to make it cheaper and reach even more people.
The same with the PS2 slim when sony introduce the slim PS2 it was all over already sony had won the generation already and by a land slide.
The xbox one has been losing badly to the point were it was almost double in september even that it gave away Destiny + Forza 5 at $399 it wasn't moving reason for the desperation drop,freebies and gifts cards..hahahaa
