i can actually check right now to see how much space FFXtakes, hold on

double_heist

FFX is 4299 mb so single layer dvd, but it is possible for ps2 games to have 8 gb like god of war 2

I thought FFX is going to be bigger with all the cgi movies but its 4gbs

Wow, that's kinda small. To think that there were cutscenes, voiced dialogues, and high-quality music. Alright, FFXIII to be 15 hours long with no sidequests.

I know!! It must have over 50 hrs of gamplay. cant believe its not more. and i loved the soundtrack

xbox360's hardware is better mgs4 honestly would of looked better on 360 even if needed to be shipped on like 10 dvd's because the hardware has more memory.damnyoyodamn

lets see if that rising game can justify this.

id rather have someting not noticeable than something really noticable.seriously in some games you have too be the biggest fanboy to even see the diffrence between the consoles.but in the end ill rather have slightly worse off graphics than muiltiple discs.

How is it out of the question? While I can't confirm Crysis' size, I can confirm that a number of PC titles that look significantly better than anything on the PS3 or 360 take up less than 9GB of disk space (Company of Heroes, Dawn of War 2 and World in Conflict). While it isn't a perfect comparison, the fact remains that DVD is not the limiting factor for either the PS3 or 360.

damnyoyodamn

DVD will soon be a limiting factor in my opinion.

it's not a limiting factor on pc because ur installing the game content to a harddrive so it doesnt even matter if a game ships on 50 dvd's lol. you wont need em after it's installed it's basically only a limiting factor on 360 because microsoft charges dev money for every dvd they use to ship their game on.

PC is not even suppose to be in this discussion, its between PS3 and 360

if microsoft would stop charging money it wouldnt be a limiting factor, but ahh who cares even if a 360 comes on 50 dvd atleast it will have better graphics than ps3 version. yea metal gear solid 4 might need 2 or 3 dvd on 360 but it would look graphically better LULZdamnyoyodamn

I see people here claiming that a certain PS3 exclusive would magically look better if it was made for the 360.

If the claim is 360 is better graphically, then how come 360 exclusives dont match to PS3's exclusives (as far as graphics go)?

and please dont give me that "less dev tme" excuse.

SquareEnix has been saying that they are focused on making FFXlll on ps3 first and TRY to reach ps3's full potential then port it to the 360. they did not say that there will be multiple discs but that seems to be the case

I hate how everyone fails to realize basically no xbox360 games have graphics engines built ground up for the xbox360 hardware. halo 3 uses the halo 2 engine slightly updated it's a last gen engine original xbox , while killzone2 uses a engine built ground up for ps3 this gen. gears of war uses the unreal 3 engine which is a multiplatform engine used for ps3 games also while games like resistance,killzone2,uncharted have engines built ground up for ps3's hardware. it's kinda even unfair to compare halo reach is supposed to have a new engine hopefully that will show off xbox360's hardware.

the sad part is uncharted 2 the graphics engine that power's the game was built with only ps3 in mind. while gears of war unreal 3 engine was not originally built only for 360 in mind. and gears of war honestly looks better to and that's a testament to 360's hardware strength. ps3 need's games built ground to hang with 360 multiplatform engine games.

People shouldnt be worried about graphics, xbox360 isnt lightyears ahead but a pc gamer would notice. Im worried video game's level design has turned into crap old first person shooters i used to be able to play the same map for years without getting bored and now the multiplayer maps im instantly bored Seriously i know it's whats making me bored is the design dev's cant think of crazy designs anymore it seems

Like healpod on unreal tournament 1999 map, that was cool map there was 3 floors with elevator with a square whole cut through each floor so you can fall all the way to the bottom but from the ceiling was a tube and there was a green blob in the middle of the map if you stand in it you get healh. and there were buttons located on the floor other people could step on them and smash the other player standing in the green blob getting health like impact hammer lol.

No attention to detail is put on gameplay flow of maps they are all just eye candy and they just dont play good just simplistic. the maps are like square box's with pretty resident evil 2 backgrounds

If Japanese didn't make PS3 so complicated and hard to program,it would have more developers willing to work hard to reach its full potential. This is the reason why most multiplatform games look slightly better on 360.Why would anyone spend more time and energy to discover PS3's hidden power when 360 is already all open and ready.

Doesnt this shot of uncharted 1 looked like he's cel-shaded? aka drake? lol http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/action/uncharteddrakesfortune/images/0/47/?full_size=1 Gears of war has alot more depth to the textures, gears looks more organic. uncharted has better shadowing than gears one reason makes it appear better at first glance or bright colors but upon closer inspection it's not up to the quality of gears of war everything just looks like flat too smooth lookin

The same if true for the pc version..

If devs take advantage of the ps3/pc's adavantages (blueray and a virtually unlimitem hd) then devs would need to use more dvds and when theres more dvds they would have to pay M$ more royalties.

[QUOTE="damnyoyodamn"][QUOTE="damnyoyodamn"]Simply put it doesnt matter how much more powerful ps3's cpu is than xbox360's, 360 graphics processor is more advanced period. a pc with a intel quadcore cpu and 7800 gtx would get smoked by a single core athlon 64 with a 8800 gt lol.

the quadcore would handle physics better, but the graphics chip is so weak lol you cant even run crysis ps3 is outdated junk compared to 360

TC, yeah I agree, 360 is holding devs to use the full capacity of Blu-ray but not very much, Rage is one of those games that come to my mind., same thing about Forza 3 which, as far as I know, will take two DVD's.

8gb seems to be an interesting number wouldn't you say? OMG can it be?? its around the size limited on DVD!!

gangster480

Instead of looking at the file space used up; why not ask what it is actually doing with that space?

I haven't actually seen those games do anything with storage that couldn't be done on 360 outside of content compression.

As far as I'm concerned Blu-ray isn't very useful until next generation.

Cow's fail to realize that game size has nothing to do with graphics and quality. Sure larger more detailed higher resolution textures take up more space but even the game with the best graphics ATM only takes up 6gb of install space (Crysis).

PC users don't measure their PC's speed by their hard drive/media storage size... console users shouldn't either.

CPM_basic
while this thread isn't really about graphics i do agree with you that size won't play a major factor. there is no excuse for cod4 to have a 5 hour campaign when something like fallout 3 looks much better and has 40 hours of content etc. if the devs wanted planes in gta4 they could have put them in. solidty was also right on the first page too about devs spending the same amount of both ps3 and 360, they make the game and then are done with it, devs don't want to spend the extra time taking advantage of every single part of both consoles, and it may potentially drop sales of a version if the 360 version had more content or vice versa.

I think allot of these people forget that storage is an enabler and not a cause, having enough is critical but having vastly more than needed isn't going to significantly improve your experience. At the end of the day storage is simply responsible for holding the art assets used by games, it is the power of the hardware and available memory that determines the quality.

All Blu-ray does is prevent textures from being compressed more than they need to be, but they cannot exceed what 256mb Vram can store.

oblivion and fallout 3 fit on one dvd . i spend more than 100 hours on both . mgs4 use alot of space for video and killzone 2 is not very long . by the way creating content on the ps3 is very expensive this is a better explication why some multiplat are short .

yeah, its all disc spaces fault games are short....because all those ps3 exclusives are way longer than fallout and oblivion....pfft, i can't even listen to most of you guys any longer because it makes me lose faith that people have one tiny bit of analytical thinking ability left

btw the whole ones and zeros are better on bluray drives me up the wall too, todays games can literally be on paper punch cards from the turn of the 19th century for all the difference the storage medium makes

You make a valid point. It could be a reason why most games are short, 360's disc capacity is holding the PS3 back.

A developer can throw as many content as they want on a Blu Ray disc but they cant because the PS3 and 360 version of the game has to be indentical in terms of content.

def_mode

So then why are PC games the same as 360/PS3 multiplats? Bottom line is this. 3rd Parties don't have those Sony backed budgets to push the system and even if they did they would be putting out more money for less of a return. So why do it? Its not 360's disc capacity holding PS3 back. Its PS3's userbase and software sales that are. If both were higher then there would be more of an incentive.

I don't know if this has been brought up yet as I'm too lazy to read through every post, but alot of PS3 games use so mauch data in redundantcy. The Blu Ray drive on the PS3 is inherently slow, so to make up for up some devs put the same data on the disk more than once to make reading the data/loading the game faster. I know MGS4 does this, I'll look for a link.

Yes GeoW2 has better textures No it doesn't have better models. Actually, character models in Gears 2 have EXTREMELY low poly count because they use texture maps of all sorts to give their detail. KZ2 uses pure polys for the different crevices on their armor and such. They only used things like normal maps for gravel or something. Also, Uncharted 2 looks better than Gears 2 in every way. Their textures are so much better this time around. I don't have a gears 2 vs UC2 comparison, but here is a comparison of gears 1 and UC. http://kineticninja.blogspot.com/2009/01/naughty-dog-realtime-graphics-and_31.html

While graphics, models and such DO take up a whole lot of space, the 7.1 audio in the game took a whole lot more space than anything else. Considering there is dialogue after dialogue.

yes multiplats cant compare with exclusives, as ps3 exclusives are usually longe, have an overall look and uncompressed surround sound, I used to have only a ps3 and a wii, now that I have a 360 im gonna be getting most multiplats on it and only exclusives for the other 2 consoles

[QUOTE="zero_snake99"][QUOTE="damnyoyodamn"]if microsoft would stop charging money it wouldnt be a limiting factor, but ahh who cares even if a 360 comes on 50 dvd atleast it will have better graphics than ps3 version. yea metal gear solid 4 might need 2 or 3 dvd on 360 but it would look graphically better LULZ

2 or 3 dvds? Seriously? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lR12jqCR5X4 There, this tells you why it needs like 15 dvds without me typing it all out.

Thats not completely true. 360 games are compressed onto DVD9's. You can practically double the amount of available space on the DVD9 by compressing it.

Hasn't that person ever heard of lossless compression? There is little reason for developers using Blu-ray to use compression, some would argue that is a good thing; but really you can reduce the file size of stuff with little to no impact on the quality.

Blu-rays are most likely full of examples of wasted space, from using no compression to repeating content to assist with Blu-ray's read speed issues. I have sat through MGS4 and I did not see anything in that game that requires the sort of space it uses.

Crysis is 7GB and looks better than your 34059723456890234679 petabyte Blu-ray discs.

MGS4 is compressed heavily, that's why it has installs. Also "lossless" compression isn't a light task. No game supports that feature. It takes a lot more memory than any of the consoles have.

As I have said, I have seen nothing in that game that justifies the storage space it takes up. You can tell me it is highly compressed; but there's something taking up all that space and I cannot see anything in the game that may be it.

Lossless audio, 1080p video and duplicated files are a few contenders; but surely they wouldn't bloat up the game that much. It's very easy for a PS3 user to point at the disk size as evidence of the need for Blu-ray, but without actually knowing what is in that file size it's hardly credible evidence.

its the lossless audio. FLAC is extremely data intensive already, but considering its 7.1 is just on a whole new level. The game also has about 10 hours of dialogue as well, which is also lossless.

Another interesting tidbit is how the biggest of those games is GTA4. Maybe devs simply take more time with their compression algorithms when making multiplats.
