So what game would say came out this generation that really revolutionised or evolved a particular genre or type of game and why? Talking software here!

For me personally I found Assassins Creed series really brought something new to the open World/sandbox games, really opening up possibilities of exploring.

Assassin's Creed

edit: another I thought of was Portal. That added a whole new way of thinking for puzzle games

I really like the crowd element of Assassin's Creed, out of that whole game that is what stuck with me....that and the story is pretty crazy(in a good way).

yep AC certainly has added something hitherto unseen in TPS ... but I can't really think of anything else new this gen, that wasnt addded by Deus Ex, System Shock 2 or Planescape Torment last gen, except for better graphics.

Other than Halflife 2 introducing a new style of physics with the gravity gun and Crysis with the open sandbox style FPS gameplay that is!

Assassin's Creed is absolutely not a TPS, more of an action adventure.

but it bothers me that people actually like the RETARDED story in that game.

Masculus

And why is that? Assassin's Creed had a very fresh (new) story. A convoluted story. The story was well told and kept you in suspense.

...in fact the only reason I could come up with as to why someone would not enjoy it would be if they disagreed with the politics of it.

Oh and of course Mass Effect, design your own character and carry their likeness and choices across an entire trilogy. granted its not perfect, but is never been done before IIRC.sts106mat

Not to mention the choices you made (or did not make) also carry over.

I agree with Assassins Creed, the freedom of it and the crowds in the game are astounding. I also say Demons souls for action rpgs. It didnt focus on story or leveling and grinding but pure skill, and the online mechanics were great.

Super Mario Galaxy for 3D platforming.

If I can recall, you are a bartender, kidnapped by Modern-day templars that seek to bring about a new world order. They use a gizmo that recreates memories trough readings of DNA datafrom your past generations in order to alocate an Alien artifact that provided mind controlling powers to biblical figures. If that isn't a cheap and retarded plot, i don't know what is.

Guitar hero 1.

Then harmonix managed to do it again with RB1 by extending the formula and bringing in a decent store system that wasnt a complete and utter ripoff.

What? I have both, well had ( I traded them both in), but they do nothing to revolutionize the genre, except maybe add in a new level of linearity and lack of difficulty. What made them tolerable and enjoyable was the presentation (sound, graphics, character models, art style).

Can't really think of any game that 'revolutionized' a genre. Nearly all game features have been done before in previous games.

Added new gameplay elements and refreshed certain genres? Yes

Dead Space, for giving a new meaning to the word 'headshot'

Portal, for...well its portal gun

Crysis/RFG/BC2, for having most/fully destructable environments

Possibly other games. All at the top of my head atm

Little Big Planet......

Exactly how did LPB revolutionize anything?

Halo revolutionized FPS. People were playing Doom graphics without storylines, before Microsoft taught people how it's done.

This Half Life of yours might as well not existed. tonnybanza1111

Half-Life did for the FPS what Doom did before it. Much like Halo did for the FPS what Goldeneye 007 did before it.

All four games did an enourmous amount for the FPS genre. Today's FPSs wouldn't be what they are without any one of them.

But the FPS genre would not be what it is even more if it wasn't for Halo. Halo defined it Half Life 2 is forgettable. Halo paved the way for FPS, Halo 2 perfected it, ODST re-established it and Reach glorified it.

There is no "even more" in this debate. Half-Life contributed an extrodinary amount to what modern-day FPSs are and how they do what they do. There is no denying this save through save through ignorantly blind defiance.

I can only think of two FPSs that "paved the way for FPS" and Halo: Combat Evolved is not one of those. The two being (arguably) are Doom and Pathways Into Darkness (also arguably - Marathon in place of Pathways Into Darkness).

Halo 2 was a pristine example of how a fantastic multiplayer should be done in a shooter (but due to the game being incomplete at launch) Halo 2 was absolutely not perfect.
I don't know what it is to "re-establish"..."it" but I dont' think ODST did that. Same goes with "glorified it" I don't know what that is.

Halo is a great game/series. But to ignore the equally great/magnificient/wonderful games that preceded Halo is just foolish. They deserve the credit they are rightly due.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. As much as I hate it, I cant deny its influence on modern online gameplay, particulary the whole perks and levelling.
Gears of War: While it didnt exactly revolutionize anything, it certainly set the bar for TPS, a bar still followed today.
Mass Effect: The godawful conversation wheel
Portal: I have seen plenty of games copying its tone and even portal mechanics, especially freeware games.

Games that did not revolutionize a genre

Assassin's Creed: I havent seen any game trying to be like it, so no. So far it has revolutionized nothing, it is innovative, but not revolutionary. I also found the game rather restrictive.
Demons Souls: There have been plenty of Action RPGs with an emphasis on skill over grinding, gear and story YEARS before Demons Souls. Everthing that had been done in Demons Souls has been done before, except for maybe the soul form and soul system.

Games that have influensed a genre, but I havent seen enough influense to say it revolutionized

Super Mario Galaxy: Inspired not only Sonic Colours, but also another platformer (I forgot the name though), if we see more SMG wannabes, I will put it on the revolutionized list.

Not to sound like and ass but I honestly want to know what you feel was revolutionary about SF 4. To be honest it was personally a huge step back in terms of gameplay in the fighting game industry especially after releasing 3rd strike. Its basically SF 2 with focus attacks.

I think a lot of people here don't understand the word revolutionary. Just because a game refined something, like Gears with the cover system, doesn't mean they revolutionized anything. Only one I can think of THIS GEN, is Little Big Planet.

Ok, explain this to me. Nobody played FPS before Halo. Me, my friends, my school. Halo comes along and everyone plays FPS. This Half Life of yours might as well not existed. Nobody will remember Jaws 3D, but everyone remembers Avatar.

Jaws 3D = Half Life. Avatar = Half Life 2. Half Life 2 > Any Halo game. Half Life > any Halo game Doom > Any Halo game. Eat your heart out.
