[QUOTE="fourseamer4"][QUOTE="SpruceCaboose"]Blu-Ray. Bash it as you will, but I can argue many ways that it is an improvement. Trinners

Blu-ray has done nothing for gaming and I can buy a stand-alone cheaper than the PS3 or have a blu-ray drive on my computer.

what's next?

cartridges have done nothing for gaming!

CDs have done nothing for gaming!

DVDs have done nothing for gaming!

Don't forget about Nintendo's proprietary disk format. In all honesty though, the media used for the games is not that big a deal since it's not hard to create your own if the need arrises. The only advantage to mainstream media is so you can play DVDs and Blue Rays.

[QUOTE="SpruceCaboose"][QUOTE="Shafftehr"][QUOTE="SpruceCaboose"] No, they did not. The specifications were finalized in 2005/2006. But thanks. They had the initial idea in 2001, the disc was not nailed down until 2004 on paper, and was not made final until 2006.

Did you even read my source? "In April of 1997, Mr. Easterling approached Sony's Technology Center in Rancho Bernardo, California with a revolutionary leap in technology for the Compact Disc industry. A non-disclosure agreement was signed by Sony's then Vice President of Technology and a transferrance of technology began. Years past and the interest level ceased. In 2001 Sony Corporation introduced Blu Ray Disc technology and rest is history. " Apparently the initial idea had been around for 4 years before it was INTRODUCED in 2001. I like how you're trying to spin it was the "initial idea" was only there in 2001 when the source I provided clearly says 1997... And then that you say it wasn't "nailed down" until 2004 when my source CLEARLY says it was INTRODUCED in 2001. So, now that you've cited yourself a half dozen times... Am I to take it you are your source? And that you have a lot of trouble admitting you've lost an argument?

I posted a link from the BDA saying the tech was finalized in 2006. The BDA. Instead, you link to some Wiki answer page about how Sony had the idea in 2001. Finalized = launched. Before it was finalized, it was not a consumer product, it was a R&D item, like the PS3 and 360 were in 2001.

Yeah, you did. You posted a link that it was FINALIZED in 2006. I posted a link saying that it EXISTED since 2001. Meaning it had been around for five whole years prior to the PS3 existing, and four years to this generation starting... Meaning it's CLEARLY not an innovative idea Sony came up with this gen. And I don't know if you read the thread title or not, but... "Name one innovative idea Sony came up with this gen. " Answer me this: When did this gen start? Then answer me this: When have I clearly demonstrated that Sony came up with the idea, and then when it was introduced . Then answer me this: Why are you continuing to argue a point which quite clearly shows that you either didn't read the thread title carefully, or are simply too stubborn to admit when you're just plain wrong? (just to clarify so you don't draw this banality out any more, Sony started work on Blu-Ray in 1997, introduced the tech in 2001, and this gen started in 2004 at the absolute earliest by any estimation - showing that this is CLEARLY not something an "idea Sony came up with this gen." - now, are we done yet?)

Sony hasn't really inovated this generation, but the quality of their games has been at itts peak. And since I dont care two hoots about innovation as long as the games that I play are fun and well made, I strongly support Sony... as long as they don't go against the Wii that is :)

Blu-ray Disc developers complete specification

Tech ready for licensing as backers unveil players

Free research: Application platforms, the state of play

CES The Blu-ray Disc specification has been completed, the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) announced last night, just three days after dotting the i's and crossing the t's on the format.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/01/06/blu-ray_spec_done/

Oh, I like this. As has been clearly shown, the technology existed years before. The fact that it wasn't designed into commercial players, and the BDA wasn't formed until later, doesn't change the fact that the technology had been around for a good long time already. So what's your deadline for when it started innovating - not when it actually came into existence, but when all the paperwork about who owned, produced it, and would profit from it was done?

Sony did not even unveil the idea for Blu-Ray until 2002, how was it finalized in 2001? You link is weaker and weaker.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/142584/hd_dvd_vs_bluray_disc_a_history.html

And yes, we count when things launch, not when things are thought up. Do you say the PS3 came out in 2006, or do you say 2000, when work started on it? Come on now, you are stretching real hard by saying we count tech from when it started in development.

Fine. Then, you know how to read - good. Read the thread title. "Name one innovative idea Sony came up with this gen." You're arguing thta Blu-ray is an innovative idea Sony came up with this gen... And you just posted a link saying that Sony unveiled the idea for Blu-Ray in 2002. Just to confirm your own self ownage... When did this gen start, again? Or are you arguing that Sony came up with Blu-ray years after they unveiled it?

Then that rules out just about everything from all the consoles, since the ideas behind everything were thought up way before this gen. Way to drive the argument to banality, since that destroys every innovation of this generation at least.

I think a unified achievement system is novel?...

Not really. They just took what the devs had been doing anyway, and putting a collective "marker" for it on the console. I wouldn't call that innovative. It is a nice feature, though.

You are twisting what the TC meant. He didnt mean "Name something Sony thought of this gen" he meant "name something Sony did this gen"

With your logic then we arent going to find out what anyone thought of until next gen when they actually implement the things they are thinking of right now.

Yeah, it's an iffy one. It's taking something that's obviously been done before and standardizing it. The standardization is sort of novel, but it's standardizing something that's not really novel at all, so... Yeah, I won't argue this. It's iffy at best.

Motion sensing controllers are decades old, the idea of rewarding players for in game achievements was done on the Atari, the idea of rumble was in the N64 at least, the ideas behind controlling games via a camera input are at least a generation old, if not more due to VR tech, XBL and its ideas are at least a decade old. What other so called innovations this gen are there for us to destroy?

Play Create SHare. Littlebigplanet, Modnation racers, gravity crahs. There hasn't been universial servers for mods etc like sony has done. If you even consider mods to be ismilar. Why is it so niche? Because it doesn't have the share feature. Mostly have to find it on zip files, and other stuff. Spening 10 minutes out of your way. Yeah that is revoloutionary and great. And yeah, I think media molecule should be considered one innovative idea since they published the idea.

For heaven's sake, Blu-Ray is only an expansion of the past technology. It's not innovative, it just increases storage capacity. It's no more innovative than CD to DVD.

The wiimote is turning out to be revolutionary, yes, but it's not innovative. It doesn't do anything that hasn't been done before - but it IS the instance of an old technology that is causing a revolution in gaming, causing other companies to follow in its footsteps.

how is it not innovative to put a gyro-accelerometer into a controller? They were the first to do it.

how is it not innovative to put a gyro-accelerometer into a controller? They were the first to do it. Also there was never a pointer in a control either which used the gyro-accelerometer to make sure where it was on the screen. It would have been impossible to detect the pointer without the gyro-accelerometer. Everything about that thign is genius.

Yes, it was a brilliant idea. Yes, it was a revolutionary idea. No, it was not an innovative idea. Sensors have existed long before the wii-mote (especially in controllers), as did the rest of the technology you mentioned. For it to be innovative, it would have to be completely new.

Nobody has found a way to sink a previously dominant namebrand as fast and as convincingly as Sony has this gen.... that's innovation right there.

i dont think theres a single thing that ms has done since day one lol

sony invented the bluray for use with games and sony and nintendo did motion sensing

ms did nothing ,

dont count natal because that was after sony did pseyetoy lol

ms is just aimed at games period they dont care for innovation-theyll take short cuts- see whats working in the industry and try to cash in , , much like what their doing with natal

sony and nintendo in my opinion are the most expeirenced of the 3

not that 360 isnt good, lol its another amazing console , , its string of games like dead rising tdu and saints row pd0 and pdxbla are easily reasons to own one

Innovative this, innovative that blablablabla.

Half the people using it don't even know what it actually means and the other half only care when it can be used to bash any target of hate --> in this case, the ps3.

Compare to MS or Nintendo... Sony has copied achievements, has jumped on the generic/soldier/FPS genre with Resistance and KZ2, basically did their own Wii mote knockoff, comming out with their own version of mario kart. I would say LBP is innovative but level editors in games has been done before. I primarily use my PS3 as a Blu-ray player which I don't see as an innovation.

Wasnt the PS2 the first console that could be placed horizontally and vertically? yes its not that big of an innovation but all the consoles adopted it this gen which shows its had posotive feedback.

-Dual analog stick: you all ought to be grateful to Sony for this idea

-Built-in Rumble: I know Ninty came up with the rumble idea but you had to buy an add-on that made the controller uglier and more uncomfortable to use

-The Home button in PSP: XBox 360 isn't the first gaming system to have this

-Integrating media playback and gaming in PS2, PSP and PS3: these are not just video game consoles

-Sixaxis: it's so fun to use; go play Rag Doll Kung Fu and you'll see

-Play, create and share on consoles: no need to elaborate on this

-Home: this XI stuff is really fun

-EyeToy and PS Eye: google Eyedentify and EyePet and you'll see

Compare to MS or Nintendo... Sony has copied achievements, has jumped on the generic/soldier/FPS genre with Resistance and KZ2, basically did their own Wii mote knockoff, comming out with their own version of mario kart. I would say LBP is innovative but level editors in games has been done before. I primarily use my PS3 as a Blu-ray player which I don't see as an innovation.

khoofia_pika

Bluetooth? Hard drive? Blu-Ray? LittleBigPlanet?

Bluetooth- Done on a phoe, Blu-ray- Just improvement not an inovation, Littlebigplanet- Pc mods

Honestly none of the consloe makers did anything inovative just expanded on small ideas

lol Sony didnt introduce that, PC games have had that for years. And if you mean brought it to consoles, the Wii game Blast Works: Build, Trade & Destroy had it. Although on a smaller scale of course.

i dont think theres a single thing that ms has done since day one lol

sony invented the bluray for use with games and sony and nintendo did motion sensing

ms did nothing ,

dont count natal because that was after sony did pseyetoy lol

ms is just aimed at games period they dont care for innovation-theyll take short cuts- see whats working in the industry and try to cash in , , much like what their doing with natal

sony and nintendo in my opinion are the most expeirenced of the 3

not that 360 isnt good, lol its another amazing console , , its string of games like dead rising tdu and saints row pd0 and pdxbla are easily reasons to own one

mariokart64fan

I love how you're completely ignoring Xbox Live

I also love how you've dismissed Natal by equating it with EyeToy. Does EyeToy track your movements in 3D space? Does EyeToy recognize your voice? Does it do it without impacting the PS3's CPU in any way? No? Shame.

Style over substance. Using E3 to overhype nothing as something great. MS is accused of this but Sony has been doing it for longer.

BTW, why do people say Sony innovated Bluray for gaming when the idea was to use the format as a Trojan Horse to sucker people into thinking they needed to spend more money on DVD's? Wait, that is innovative...

True, but then again a 20 GB hardrive won't really cut it this gen. You need something bigger

Having PS1 game Backwards compatible. oh wait... Dualshock 2 and 3. Oh wait... Wireless controllers. Oh wait... Digital distribution of full games. Oh wait... Well it seems the ps3 would have been cooler back in 06 but typical SOny missed the ball by 3 years.

The ability to install an alternate operating system effectively turning your gaming console into a computer. How about that?

fourseamer4
Why turn my PS3 into a computer when I can just build a computer myself at better pricing?

To play all SNES, Sega Genesis and LucasArts games on my 46'' HDTV.

Not really since the HD don't have to be from Sony, it can be any generic HD that fits.
