Naughty Dog Aims to 'Change the F***ing Industry' with The Last of Us

Naughty Dog hopesThe Last of Us is the storytelling renaissance this industry needs.

Naughty Dog is not taking their work onThe Last of Uslightly. The company behindUnchartedis looking to raise the stakes with their new PS3 exclusive, demanding other companies follow their lead to push the gaming industry to greater heights.

According to an interview conducted byEurogamer, Naughty Dog, as a collective whole but relayed by creative director and writer Neil Druckmann, is tired of the industry's "poor" standards when it comes to storytelling. We've become complacent with mediocrity and often times wind up praising it. Naughty Dog feels that needs to stop, so they're setting out to "change the f***ing industry" withThe Last of Us.

By raising the bar withThe Last of Us, Naughty Dog hopes other developers will take a long, hard look at how they approach crafting their games and say, "Okay, I really need to learn the craft of storytelling, I really need to involve my actors in this in order to get realistic performances and realistic actors. That's what we want to do."

What makes this difficult, according to Naughty Dog, is that game industry reviewers are too quick to give thumbs up for the most basic of stories. Therefore, game developers don't feel they need to exert themselves in the storytelling department, and that infuriates Naughty Dog, a company who strives to push themselves when it comes to delivering a worthwhile narrative experience for their fans.

"We try so hard at Naughty Dog to push things," Druckmann said. "And then games come out that are fun and exciting and get visceral things right, but to read in reviews that they have an amazing story is disheartening to us because we work so hard at it.

"As critics we need to raise the bar, otherwise no-one's going to change. We're going to keep pushing ourselves, and kill ourselves to make this story [The Last of Us] happen - but hope that by doing it, the rest of the industry is going to take notice and try to do the same thing."

WithThe Last of Us, Naughty Dog wants to deliver something more than just a quintessential, gruesome zombie tale. In fact, Druckmann said the game is more about the relationship between the two lead characters, Ellie and Joel, than it is about what nearly wiped out the human race.

"This is going to sound corny, and it might not appeal to gamers, but I would say it's a love story," admitted Druckmann. "It's not a romantic love story, it's a love story about a father-daughter-like relationship."

It's no secret the zombie genre has been spread thin over the last few years. We've seen our fair share of zombie first-person shooters, third-person action games, and even titles where you defend your front lawn from the zombie apocalypse with a legion of spitting plants. But there's one thing that has constantly eluded developers when crafting games in the zombie genre: rich storytelling. It's always about the disgusting monsters and rarely about the characters living through the experience. And that's why Naughty Dog decided to roll up their sleeves and dive into this already oversaturated genre -- to get it right.

"We approached this genre because we felt no-one is getting to the heart of it. It tells you something about the human condition -- that's what you want to do as a storyteller," explained Druckmann. "We're not saying every game needs a strong, compelling and dramatic story, but if you are going to make a narrative-based game then you better learn the craft."

As of right now, the PS3-exclusiveThe Last of Ushas no set release date.

I'm excited. We know how good they are at storytelling. Now the real question is can they ask the tough questions, can they make these characters deep enough and enter a relm no other medium can? I hope so, the game will be a classic if they succeed.

Well Naughty Dog, you still always seem to come across as slightly arrogant with your comments.

"We need to be the ones to set the bar, because no-one else will."

Yeah right. There's plenty of quality storytelling in video games when you look at the genre as a whole.

You don't need to change anything.

It has to be less linear then uncharted.....Don't think they can do that on there engine. Also There inspiration is the show The Walking dead. So story wise it has ALOT of potential but gameplay? well see.

I'd rather ND do this

They should check out To the Moon and then try to reach that bar. They're definitely talented game developers, but arrogant as well. Perhaps they need a game to flop hard to bring them back down to earth.

I'm always up for good storytelling in video games, provided that ND can actually pull it off.

I just don't like ND's attitude. This is not the first time they've come across as slightly arrogant.

I'd say it's more to do with the characters being/believing they are the last remaining humans, at least within the area/city the live in. But I think you knew that.

It's gonna be good.

There's plenty of games that have excellent story telling, as good as a developer Naughty Dog is I don't think they can raise the bar even further. :|

The story in UC3 was actually very good, and it didn't go on a bizarre tangent at the end like UC2 did. As far as quality storytelling goes, I can't think of anything else that supersedes it, except for the culmination of the Mass Effect games. Good storytelling certainly isn't coming from CoD/BF/Halo/Gears/Resistance/Killzone/Zelda/etc.

Well ND do care about the story a lot, based from the Uncharted series. Personnally I don't think that storytelling needs to be a focus when developping games but I appreciate the efforts on that as long that the gameplay design doesn't suffer and you guys can say what you want but Uncharted 2 and 3 has a good blend of great storytelling and great gameplay... unlike ***coughmgscough***. Not everyone can pull it off like ND do. Last of Us won't change anything and maybe doesn't need to.

ND, just do what you're good at and that's it.

I think the fact that the [young] female protagonist isn't a little pansy who needs to be saved from her own shadow already makes it safe from the cliche problem.
