Wow, lots of 360 fanboys here... :?

I personally think the game will be GOTY easily and will set a new standard. Can't wait for the game!!

GaMeR_Willz

Yeah, there's tons of lems on this site. We used to have cow overlords, and then the lems started a revolution and they're in charge now....

I have no doubt about it, ND is by far the most talented dev this gen, they can do anything. The Last of Us will be a huge success and will probably even get GOTY... feels good to be a PS3 owner, Sony really spoils us by giving more and more exclusive games to play all the time. I always have something forward to look too.

I can't wait to see what they do with this game! I love games with great storylines and ND delivers that for me at least compared to most games.

Oh I'm so excited for this game. I believe Naughty Dog will definitely set the standard...again. :D

Naughty Dog Aims to 'Change the F***ing Industry' with

The Last of Us

Naughty Dog Aims to 'Change the F***ing Industry' with The Last of Us

Naughty Dog hopesThe Last of Us is the storytelling renaissance this industry needs.

Naughty Dog is not taking their work onThe Last of Uslightly. The company behindUnchartedis looking to raise the stakes with their new PS3 exclusive, demanding other companies follow their lead to push the gaming industry to greater heights.

According to an interview conducted byEurogamer, Naughty Dog, as a collective whole but relayed by creative director and writer Neil Druckmann, is tired of the industry's "poor" standards when it comes to storytelling. We've become complacent with mediocrity and often times wind up praising it. Naughty Dog feels that needs to stop, so they're setting out to "change the f***ing industry" withThe Last of Us.

By raising the bar withThe Last of Us, Naughty Dog hopes other developers will take a long, hard look at how they approach crafting their games and say, "Okay, I really need to learn the craft of storytelling, I really need to involve my actors in this in order to get realistic performances and realistic actors. That's what we want to do."

What makes this difficult, according to Naughty Dog, is that game industry reviewers are too quick to give thumbs up for the most basic of stories. Therefore, game developers don't feel they need to exert themselves in the storytelling department, and that infuriates Naughty Dog, a company who strives to push themselves when it comes to delivering a worthwhile narrative experience for their fans.

"We try so hard at Naughty Dog to push things," Druckmann said. "And then games come out that are fun and exciting and get visceral things right, but to read in reviews that they have an amazing story is disheartening to us because we work so hard at it.

"As critics we need to raise the bar, otherwise no-one's going to change. We're going to keep pushing ourselves, and kill ourselves to make this story [The Last of Us] happen - but hope that by doing it, the rest of the industry is going to take notice and try to do the same thing."

WithThe Last of Us, Naughty Dog wants to deliver something more than just a quintessential, gruesome zombie tale. In fact, Druckmann said the game is more about the relationship between the two lead characters, Ellie and Joel, than it is about what nearly wiped out the human race.

"This is going to sound corny, and it might not appeal to gamers, but I would say it's a love story," admitted Druckmann. "It's not a romantic love story, it's a love story about a father-daughter-like relationship."

It's no secret the zombie genre has been spread thin over the last few years. We've seen our fair share of zombie first-person shooters, third-person action games, and even titles where you defend your front lawn from the zombie apocalypse with a legion of spitting plants. But there's one thing that has constantly eluded developers when crafting games in the zombie genre: rich storytelling. It's always about the disgusting monsters and rarely about the characters living through the experience. And that's why Naughty Dog decided to roll up their sleeves and dive into this already oversaturated genre -- to get it right.

"We approached this genre because we felt no-one is getting to the heart of it. It tells you something about the human condition -- that's what you want to do as a storyteller," explained Druckmann. "We're not saying every game needs a strong, compelling and dramatic story, but if you are going to make a narrative-based game then you better learn the craft."

As of right now, the PS3-exclusiveThe Last of Ushas no set release date.

That's why naughtydog sucks they're trying too hard to make good games.

So I guess I can quit listening to cows who claim they already did that will their Dude Raider clone. I like ND and they are most certainly one of the top 10 dev teams in the industry. But they have never did anything that tells me they could change the industry. And them claiming they will and are sick of other developers work comes across as dickish.

WarTornRuston

They are defiantly a Sony studio now, right down to the arrogance.

Cows stop hyping for this game!! You know jack about it.

You know at the developers say to you, but as far as I know the game can turn out to be a big piece of crap.

At least wait for a gameplay trailer, you stupid fanboys. God.

What the... I don't care about storytelling in games... this is a video game not a movie Naughty Dog. Damn... and narrative is not just cutscenes playing every five seconds.

What a load of sh!t.

"Hurr durr durr we take our stories so seriously the rest of the industry sucks so we're going to show those n00bs how it's done hurr durr durr."

You take your stories so seriously? Is that why you've spent this whole gen ripping off Indiana Jones? Is that why you've used nothing but stock characters with all the depth of a wet Kleenex who don't evolve in any meaningful way whatsoever? Is that why you designed the set-pieces in Uncharted 3 first and built the story around them second?

What a bunch of arrogant f*cks. When you write something on the level of Planescape Torment, let me know, Naughty Dog. Until then, you're still playing catch up. At least the rest of the industry is actually capable of coming up with somewhat original storylines instead of blatantly copying Indiana Jones/I Am Legend/the Walking Dead etc.

[QUOTE="djsifer01"]Im amazed at how many of you doubt one of the best development studios in the industry. This will be a instant classic and one of the best games to date mark my words.Chris_Williams

As long as they don't change the industry, I'm fine with it.

Like I said, i'm not into much "press X" movie games that last 5 hours. I would hate for it to become the next big trend.

if uncharted 3 was on the pc, i'm sure you would like it all of a sudden

I have it on ps3...

Explain to me what I wrote was wrong, and how it becoming an industry trend would be good for gamers.

Story on the level of Planescape Torment, and story telling on the level of Half Life 2. I got a semi-huge 1984 boner (2.7 inches) as I played through that game seeing all the different little things going on in the city.

People should really slow their roll on this game. Sounds like a bunch of PR shat to me, and the game doesn't look like anything game-changing.

Bigboi500

I agree with Bigboi, though I'm sure it'll be worth playing.

Yeah I hope so too, but let's not kid ourselves folks, it's not going to be some Oscar-worthy story wrapped in a gotg thrill ride from start to finish. The best we can hope for is a coherent story without over-the-top drama and good gameplay that doesn't involve over-used cliched scenarios.

I'm expecting something like that movie, "The Road".

People are misinterpreting what is being said, I think. ND are simply saying that they now know that their storytelling rivals that of most films/indie films/etc. They have got to be the most all-around talented team out there at the moment.

Heirren

What movies are you watching where games like Uncharted come anywhere close to them?

Anything from Sound of My Voice to Bellflower to big budget hollywoodesque pictures. Why do you ask?

BS only movie it reminded me of was a Michael Bay's Indiana Jones. Certainly not Bellflower

Comparing anything ever made by Naughty Dog to a film based on a book by Cormac McCarthy is insulting to McCarthy.

Can I play it when your done with it? I never knew I am Legend/The walking Dead are the only zombie media forms out there . But you would know, since you you already played the game.

I find it ironic that out of that whole post, that's the bit you focused on.

wow someone sounds crabby though for the hatred for the company you have its not shocking. Also where has it been said about that of uncharted 3? or are you just taking a shot in the dark. Also yea I agree it takes tons of insperation from indian but its not copy and paste exact same story from said movies.

Not at all. Uncharted 2/3 were genuinely well told stories. Bellflower was terrible, imo. Very sloppy acting and editing.
