have you played uncharted 3? the game scored a 10 at ign and a 9 here, must be a very good movie if it scores so well on a GAME WEBSITE

ChubbyGuy40

MGS4 got a 10 here and a lot of other places, yet it's the shining example of how to sell an interactive movie.

And yes, I do own UC3. Also own UC2.

must be a great movie if you went out and bought 2 and 3, you could have just "watched" it on youtube you know.

There are already games that focus on delivering a touching and deep story. Silent Hill: Shattered Memories comes to mind. Shattered Memories gets way too little recognition, yet it is one of the best games this generation.

Imagine if all mainstream games were composed by 30% cutscenes, 50% walking around unlocking scripted events and 20% actual gameplay. No thanks. :P

If you want some really interesting, original and promising zombie games look for Dead State and Project Zomboid.

Change the industry with a zombie shooter. Totally.foxhound_fox

Well Left 4 Dead did! I have yet to see a coop experience that balanced and well implemented.

Well that's the thing; most mainstream games ARE like that.

It's pretty scary. I honestly can barely stand the mainstream market today.

Killing Floor is BY FAR the most balanced co-op shooter ever designed. Everything from the mechanics, to gun pricing, to gun damanage to perks, enemy damage, etc.

L4D absolutely pales in comparison

That said L4D is unbelievable awesome, but Killing Floor just absolutely decimates it in terms of balance.

Really? I loved L4D especially because of the fan maps you could just download off the internet. Some of them were extremely well done and scarier than the actually game (silent hill maps). I did watch some videos of Killing floor but never REALLY looked into it because of genre fatigue, but its good you say?

BTW I don't really care for playing the online coop so much and i appreciated the decent friendly AI in L4D. How does it hold together as a single player game?

Killing Floor is a game for friends. If you don't want to play with people then don't bother. There's so much to the difficulty of the game, and having a mix of classes and players to tackle it that playing solo utterly cripples the experience.

It also lacks a lot of modes that L4D has such as a campaign for instance. It's purely survival mode (but it was also never a $50 retail release either).

If you, and a few friends, get in on it during one of their $5 sales, or something, it's a blast. My friends and I have put in upwards of 100 hours into it over our Christmas break away from university it's so addicting (though I already owned it long before they did). I'm on course to have more hours played in Killing Floor than I ever did in L4D1 or 2 (which I played a crapload of).

Naughty Dog is run by a bunch of arrogant loudmouths it would seem. So far they've done nothing to change the industry and we're supposed to believe that they intend on doing a full 180 from their core design philosophies? Please.

their gameplay is average, they should just stop making games and make cgi movies since that's the only thing they know what to do or care about.

what promises have they made that they don't keep? I wanna hear this

By stating stupid s*it like "we're gonna change the whole industry with our game". People then have extremely high expectations for the game which simply means the game can't possibly meet them.

Like I said, sounds just like Molyneux before every new Fable game.

it was the naughty dog team that worked on uncharted 3, its just uncharted 3 had a way smaller team working on it, the original team who worked on uncharted 2 split in half, One half went to start production on the last of us and the other half went to work on uncharted 3.

If you can get the gamer to say "WTF is going on" and they really want to know what happens next, then you have done your job well as far as crafting a story in a game. Trying to attain a higher level of storytelling is probably not going to work. But, I am not opposed to anyone trying. I think it is possible, but wonder how fun would the game end up being. They have to strike that balance.

People are misinterpreting what is being said, I think. ND are simply saying that they now know that their storytelling rivals that of most films/indie films/etc. They have got to be the most all-around talented team out there at the moment.

Rightfully so, though. You have Naughty Dog stating they want to do something phenomenal that throws the industry on its heels. Generally that would come across as a "so what" statement, but when you take into account that when Uncharted 3 was nearing release they said not to expect much of a difference, that is saying something.

Naughty Dog has come a long way from that small development team who made Crash Bandicoot back in the 90's.

Every time I look at the new, pretentious Naughty Dog and its rabid fanboys...it's too bad.

I really, really liked playing Crash back in the day...back when Naughty Dog only cared about fun gameplay.

It is, but Uncharted was incredibly fun to play as well. When they say "change" it is dealing more with the storytelling than what the story is about. There's a big difference. A lot of games have decent stories, but the way in which they are told is very ancient.

So I guess I can quit listening to cows who claim they already did that will their Dude Raider clone. I like ND and they are most certainly one of the top 10 dev teams in the industry. But they have never did anything that tells me they could change the industry. And them claiming they will and are sick of other developers work comes across as dickish.

What I saw from Uncharted is that ND basically made an interactive movie, not a game. I like games that provide story through other means, different than movies -- like Metroid Prime, people say that game has no story ... no, it does it's just not done in a conventional way. You read through logs and things you scan to find out more about the back story. The best parts in Mass Effect are reading the codex, not the dialogue sections. Deus Ex: Human Revolutions story was way better considering I read all the logs and things I found around the game world, without that I wouldn't have enjoyed it as much. What I get is a sense of "this is more story telling like a movie" -- that's good for some players but I don't care for video games to emulate movies. I want the medium to have story telling in a unique way that's not done elsewhere.

[QUOTE="Miketheman83"]Naughty dog needs to focus on gameplay and stop trying to make movies. Gamers want to have fun if they want to watch a movie they will watch a movie.GaMeR_Willz

Wut?

Did you forget about Uncharted? It has one of the best gameplays people has ever seen.

Is that why they had to patch the shooting mechanics?

[QUOTE="Haziqonfire"]Change the industry by showing us I Am Legend the game staring Ellen Page. Okay. Story is the least important aspect of gaming. Haziqonfire

It is, but Uncharted was incredibly fun to play as well. When they say "change" it is dealing more with the storytelling than what the story is about. There's a big difference. A lot of games have decent stories, but the way in which they are told is very ancient.

Well you may be surprised but I actually agree with you. However, I don't think I'm reading the statement the same way you are. See, before even playing Uncharted 2 I've heard complaints that it was just an interactive movie. When I did eventually play it, there were moments when I believed it WAS a movie--in the sense that control was taken away--but then I realized, "oh, wait. I'm PLAYING this?!"

So that was step one perhaps. If you look at what happened from Uncharted to Uncharted2/3, there was a big leap in terms of interaction/etc. Now when I read the statement in the thread title, I think to myself, "well, they want to take it one more huge step forward."

Again, I understand what you were saying, but one must think that that format is based on dated technology design. Whether or not it is ones preference doesn't matter. The bottom line is that technology is moving fast and allows for new ways of interaction today.

Both types of those experiences will always be offered, I just think ND is letting this get to their head a bit too much. They've created a really cinematic game but a lot of other games have done it as well.

ND's just looks more like how movies do it instead of trying to do it specific to the medium. That's fine and a lot of people will enjoy that -- I don't really care for it.
