PS3's netflix is now disc free, runs 1080p video, has 5.1 surround sound, subtitles for some videos and an improved UI that looks and functions much better than the 360's. I just tried it on my PS3 and the new interface is great. Its easy to navigate and looks sexy. My xbox is connected directly to my router and my ps3 is wireless, but the PS3's videos still load up much faster.

Yeah, apparently the new update was pretty hefty. Likely this'll happen with 360's as well at some point.

Yep, and no $50/year gold subscription required.

You'd think XBL subscribers would get some sort of benefit for that $50/year but it turns out that money just goes directly into Kinect marketing.

Oh, sorry ... has that been released for the 360 yet? No? MS probably had to delay it becuase they're completely focused on releasing Kinect.

gotta give the ps3 props when it earns it and in this case it has earned it.

the new interface is great and it takes a quarter of the time to scan through the 150 things in my instant Q.

going through things one by one on the 360 version is a chore.

Subtitles? Cool, the lack of those is one of the things I dislike most about streaming/digital downloads. One thing I don't understand is why Netflix now goes through the psn, whereas before it was just going through the internet.

Worth it if you didn't have hd and surround sound with the alternative. That's just a step away from watching it on network tv.

Well actually I find the UI better on the 360, but since the PS3 version has 5.1 and 1080p, the actual viewing of movies looks like a better experience on the Triple, and with no Gold subscription needed too.

Redbox? You must be joking. Dollar a day? What a rip. I'd rather get netflix in the mail and watch unlimited streaming with no late fees for just twenty dollars a month instead of this dreaded "dollar a day" thing.

Don't know, maybe it'll just say you're on Netflix. I hope it doesn't show popups during video playback, that crap is annoying. I just don't see the point in going through the PSN, it's just one more thing that needs to not be down in order to use Netflix, adding to my cable and Netflix itself. Of course, of the three, my cable is the only unreliable factor.

btw, the new fast forward on the d-pad is great.

i hated watching movies and tv on ps3 because every time the triggers got pressed, (which despite being careful happened all the time) you had to scramble to find your place again.

with it on d-pad that got fixed, way to go netflix.

Silverlight isn't on PS3. That requires a licensing fee which, I'm sure, Netflix and Sony don't want to deal with. Also, reread your source. It says they know 1080p and 5.1 is coming, but didn't know to which device... seems to be the PS3.

I noticed a massive dip in Netflix new stream release quality. Maybe it's because of PS3. Since it has better audio at the cost of picture quality (guess).

Movies now have a slight black bar on the bottom and on the top. The amount of compression is worse then what TV networks use.

I'm just going to blame PS3 for this. :P

360 needs the search feature. It's no biggie to walk 15ft to the computer and search something up, but it would be better integrated into the system. Also, since I'm using wifi on our bedroom 360, it would be nice to be able to set the streaming rate manually. It's kind of annoying to have it switch back and forth in the middle of a movie when the signal fades. I don't need HD on a 19" screen.

Anybody who questions the point of netflix needs to give it a try. Not only do you get your 1 DVD in the mail, so you can get all the latest films, but you also get access to a ludicrous amount of movies and TV via the online service. I love that Military Channel show Special Ops, but never get to see the 4-5 episodes I missed because it's rarely on. They have the whole series right on Netflix. Supa cool maan.

Yet another benefit of $50/$60 a year Gold membership that is just as good or better on every other system for free.

Of course, personally, I'm still holding off of Netflix. The streaming movies is pretty sweet, but I get three at a time unlimited mailers from Blockbuster Online... and I can use them for dvds or blurays OR PS3 games (or ps2, wii, nintendo ds, 360, etc...), and if I want to see something without waiting on a mailer, I can go trade the mailers in for free rentals at the store. Yeah, the instant streaming is better for instant gratification, but store trade-ins is almost as good, and three at a time movies or games for less than one movie at a time from netflix plus one game at a time from gamefly seems like the better deal to me.

Edit: Oh yeah, and Blockbuster gets pretty much all new releases at least a month before netflix. So that's another plus.

Xbox's netflix doesnt do 1080p, theyre talking about Zune

I find funny that the media center of the PS3 on that video is connected to a Windows 7 PC. I heard that Nintendo only uses Apple systems to not support the competition but it it seems that Sony doesn't care about that kind of stuff...

It didn't have those before? Why anyone would use that over driving 5 minutes to a redbox is beyond me.

Redbox? You must be joking. Dollar a day? What a rip. I'd rather get netflix in the mail and watch unlimited streaming with no late fees for just twenty dollars a month instead of this dreaded "dollar a day" thing.

Netflix? You must be joking. I'd rather pay 5$ total for the 5 movies I watch a month instead of this dreaded "20 dollars a month" thing.

[QUOTE="zero_snake99"][QUOTE="navyguy21"] Xbox version already has 1080p streaming, and both version run on MSs Silverlight tech. I just found it funny that MS is on PS3 :P

navyguy21

Silverlight isn't on PS3. That requires a licensing fee which, I'm sure, Netflix and Sony don't want to deal with. Also, reread your source. It says they know 1080p and 5.1 is coming, but didn't know to which device... seems to be the PS3.

Did you read the whole article or skim the title? Also, Silverlight is already licensed by netflix and that is the platform it runs on. Also in the link ;) "What we do know is that Xbox already streams 1080p over Silverlight, the same tech that Netflix uses..."

The link was talkin about 1080p streaming coming to other netflix devices such as TVs and Bluray players that support netflix.

Once again... wrong >_>

"What we do know is that Xbox already streams 1080p over Silverlight, the same tech that Netflix uses, through its Zune store, and that it looks pretty great."

Silverlight is used for the Zune store and Netflix on 360... no mention of PS3 with Silverlight.. considering Silverlight is OWNED by MS.

Also, unless Engaget is talking about the Fall update... 360 currently only supports 720p. That's a fact. SOURCE

You better watch them that very night and return them the next day. Who needs the hassle?
