no, because PS3 users can now get a better viewing experience without having to pay the yearly fee of xbox live

But I can watch it for free on my PC can't I? Or can we not play that game....

and dont forget how much bandwidth you would suck up, on streaming 1080i 5.1 movies

Yep, and no $50/year gold subscription required.

You'd think XBL subscribers would get some sort of benefit for that $50/year but it turns out that money just goes directly into Kinect marketing.

Dire_Weasel

Oh, ZING!

It's true folks, that 50 bucks a year isn't going anywhere but to Microsoft and marketing. :P

You can actually watch movies with friends over XBL with the party system, something you cannot do on the PS3

So the 360 version is still better

This is good :) too bad I dont have a PS3. Now I have a Wii and a SD TV that the Wii looks great on, but sadly my Wifi has been turned off because my dad beleives it gives you cancer and Im having the most trouble with finding a cable to hook it up to my router. Oh well, maybe one of these days I will get to use Netflix on my console.

This post is ridiculous, first of all the neww 360's have built in wi fi, and that's only if you actually use wi fi, second of all XBL gold cards are 40 bucks, and the RROD replacement plan is a pathetic attempt to get in an extra bash on the 360

Your paying 170$ (70$ if you use thernet) JUST TO VIEW A PROGRAM THAT YOU ALREADY ARE PAYING FOR LOLOLOLOLLOLFallout3dog

LOL you have to pay for yearly gold membership on xbox live, for the internet (which if you are using fios, cable, or anything faster than DSL is expensive), the netflix monthly subscription fee, and the monthly power bill so that your 360 and HD TV works just to watch a netflix movie on your 360. Hmmm strange that seems to add up to more than what it cost for all the same with PS3 just without the gold membership.

If we had to break down price points:

Internet: 50 bucks a year

PSN: Free

Xbox Live Gold (in order to use Netflix): 50 bucks a year

Netflix: 108 a year.

TOTAL:

PSN: 158 a year

Xbox Live: 208 a year

well from what ive tried so far right now the picture quality does look better than on 360 but i didnt know the 360 can do 1080p on netflix either so i never changed the setting from 720p on that! but it is harder to keep an hd streaming on the 360 (get alot of pauses on it) than it is on the ps3 for me anyways

Now its disc free, how long did that take,i can't remember. That was the main reason i use netflix on my 360.XBOX will be getting 1080p video and 5.1 surround down the road,so its not like ps3 has this feature and no one else gets it.I tried downloading netflix on my ps3 and logging in,but wait a second i can't log in.I tried 5 times in a row.Ok how am i supposed to be impressed with these new features if i can't log in.I guess you get what you dont pay for.

Its a domino effect. For the past ~year netflix on X360 has destroyed netflix on PS3. PS3 doesnt want to be eternally worse so they make an improvement. I can guarantee you in the near future X360 netflix will come over the top and crush PS3 netflix. Point is for the past year my netflix has been better than yours and sooner than later that will happen again

netflix on the 360 will always be better mostly because it has a way better unique layout, easy and clean and looks nice...PS3 version doesnt look bad, but it looks like it was pasted without thought together, PLUS I have to sign on to use it...atleast I do in Canada

Played with both the 360 version (the updated version that will drop next month)and the new PS3 version "side-by-side" as it were.

Firstly, the PS3 version is significantly different to the video posted above. They've simplified it significantly on PS3, made better use of screen real-est...ate and gotten rid of that horrible-looking menu on the left.

Which one do I like better? It's a toss-up. The 360 version is faster and easier to navigate, with lightning quick response, faster searching (using the 360 chatpad) and is just smoother overall. PS3 version is sluggish, takes significantly longer to start up and everything feels jerky, with movie cover images taking longer to load.

But the video quality on the PS3 is significantly better (1080p vs 720p.) On my TV, the difference is immediately apparent. Both versions support 5.1 audio, but while 360 does it using Dolby Pro Logic II, PS3 has Dolby Digital Plus. I couldn't really tell the difference on the material I tried (Law & Order SVU), but I'll have to find a good test movie to really give it a critical listen. I suspect that the difference will be largely academic.

The 360 version has Party Mode, the PS3 version does not. But then the 360 version requires Xbox Live Gold whereas the PS3 requires no additional subscription. Ps3 version supports Closed Captions while 360 version does not. But Xbox 360 version indicates HD content in the menu, while the PS3 version does not (at least, not that I could tell.)

Which one will I use? Probably depends on whichever console I happen to be making more use of at the time.

I have both, and while the PS3's new UI is improved over the stuff of old, and even does things that the 360 does not currently (preview box, search function, etc), when it comes to the basic movement, it still feel clunky, especially compared to the 360, and because of that, ultimately, 360 will still be my default gaming Netflix machine.

As for the video quality difference, at the moment, does not really matter. I only have a 720p HDTV.

Otherwise, played with the Wii for a moment, but with it being in SD, feels obsolete.

no, because PS3 users can now get a better viewing experience without having to pay the yearly fee of xbox live

But I can watch it for free on my PC can't I? Or can we not play that game....

Good luck trying to convince your girlfriend or wife to curl up in front of the PC for a nice relaxing movie night.

You can actually watch movies with friends over XBL with the party system, something you cannot do on the PS3

So the 360 version is still better

worldsworstgame

That might be the most useless feature I've ever heard of. Why would you want to chat during a movie? Unless your doing the whole MST3K thing.

Yeah, apparently the new update was pretty hefty. Likely this'll happen with 360's as well at some point.

lundy86_4
The Xbox Netflix update is happening in 2 weeks, and will have the same features. And I will continue to use the 360 because unlike the PS3 Netflix, it let's you convert 4:3 ratio to 16:9.

Makes sense that they wouldn't ostracize a portion of their market. Now I just wish I could use Netflix, but it's a huge bandwidth hog :(

What I like so far:

Speed: seems quite a bit faster. The only thing that seems to run a little slowly is the video browse things, but that's to be expected. It still runs pretty good though.

Video quality: All in all, much improved. HD seems no longer limited to what they say is HD. Or, rather it may, but the video quality is all around better. They probably are streaming everything in 1080p, so even images with lower resolution are displayed at max quality.

What I dislike so far:

Have to sign into psn to use it. Not a big deal, but seems like a step backwards considering it wasn't required before. Also, notifications aren't disabled during video playback, so that's kind of annoying.

The in video menu (accessible via triangle) is no longer functional.

Another thing that is both better and worse is the menus in regards to TV series. It's nice that the synopsis for the whole season is now accessible and doesn't disappear as soon as it realizes what episode you are on. What's not as nice is it is a little more difficult to get the synopsis for the episodes.

All in all, I think I prefer the layout from before, as it was simpler; function over form. The new speeds are nice, and not having to use a disc is nice.

No, it's $10/month minimum. $15 if you want to get one disc at a time, and $20/month if you want blu rays and 2 discs at a time (in addition to streaming.)

The feature of streaming Netflix through your PS3 (assuming you have a Netflix account) is free. On 360, streaming Netflix requires additional fees beyond just the Netflix account (Gold subscription).

What MS charges is the price. If one person found a 60gb ps3 at launch for 50 bucks, the price would still have been 600. And the price for online is free if we're going by the majority.
