360 needs the search feature.

navyguy21

View the link i posted earlier, there is a search function in the new fall beta along with 5.1 audio

Awesome. That'll be great since they only have fraction of their total library available to view in the 360 Netflix browser.

but I get three at a time unlimited mailers from Blockbuster Online... and I can use them for dvds or blurays OR PS3 games (or ps2, wii, nintendo ds, 360, etc...), and if I want to see something without waiting on a mailer, I can go trade the mailers in for free rentals at the store.

ianuilliam

You're right about the games thing. I had Blockbuster 3 at a time and it saved me so much cash over renting those games in the store, or buying them. I might pick the sub up again for the holidays since it's so dang cheap.

My wife just loves Netflix instant streaming, and I do too, but not as much.:P We watch 2-3 movies a day combined as a family, so waiting won't suffice in our case.

[QUOTE="zero_snake99"] Silverlight isn't on PS3. That requires a licensing fee which, I'm sure, Netflix and Sony don't want to deal with. Also, reread your source. It says they know 1080p and 5.1 is coming, but didn't know to which device... seems to be the PS3.zero_snake99

Did you read the whole article or skim the title? Also, Silverlight is already licensed by netflix and that is the platform it runs on. Also in the link ;) "What we do know is that Xbox already streams 1080p over Silverlight, the same tech that Netflix uses..."

The link was talkin about 1080p streaming coming to other netflix devices such as TVs and Bluray players that support netflix.

Once again... wrong >_>

"What we do know is that Xbox already streams 1080p over Silverlight, the same tech that Netflix uses, through its Zune store, and that it looks pretty great."

Silverlight is used for the Zune store and Netflix on 360... no mention of PS3 with Silverlight.. considering Silverlight is OWNED by MS.

Also, unless Engaget is talking about the Fall update... 360 currently only supports 720p. That's a fact. SOURCE

Maybe it is the fall update because my console is streaming in 1080p. Also, the Netflix streaming service is built on the silverlight platform. You seriously think they have separate servers for PS3? If Netflix uses silverlight on PC, 360, and Wii, why would they change it for PS3? The business world doesnt work like console wars. MS isnt going to say no just because its playstation lol. Bluray uses MS VC-1 codec, is that bad? Windows is on Sony Vaio computers......you gonna fight that too?

Edit, Your link is from 2008 :|

It didn't have those before? Why anyone would use that over driving 5 minutes to a redbox is beyond me.

topgunmv

Redbox? You must be joking. Dollar a day? What a rip. I'd rather get netflix in the mail and watch unlimited streaming with no late fees for just twenty dollars a month instead of this dreaded "dollar a day" thing.

Netflix? You must be joking. I'd rather pay 5$ total for the 5 movies I watch a month instead of this dreaded "20 dollars a month" thing.

Netflix is only $10 a month, if you only want one movie at a time, with no late fees, and a much larger library than redbox. Even if you only watch a few movies a month, getting the one-at-a-time plan from eitehr Netflix or Blockbuster online is FAR better than Redbox.

Even if I took 2 days to watch every movie, that's still only 10$. Redbox doesn't have "late fees".

Errm... silverlight isn't used on a server. It's used for the user interface. Just like how 360 doesn't allow flash ads on their games/dashboard anymore and require silverlight instead. Wii, PS3 don't use the Silverlight because they are ground up made programs that can have the special DRM built in. PC, Mac, and 360 uses Silverlight because since they are open platform, they require the Ready to Play DRM that is used in Silverlight.

Sometimes we lose things is all im sayin. Heck, ive even lost netflix DVDs lol, but they dont charge you full price for a used disc. I wasnt trying to offend you, just pointing out how convenient and diverse netflix is.

The 10$ a month deal is by mail, even I don't like waiting several days when I'm in the mood for a movie. You can rent blurays for 2$ a day from redbox, yes.

Plus Netflix doesn't run out as easily as Redbox does.

Ten bucks for one at a time, unlimited, and streaming ability still seems better to me. Also as someone else mentioned, the titles available are also a huge plus. Maybe you don't watch that many movies a month but redbox is everything I hated about old-school rentals.

True. I hate the inconsistent quality of streaming. Sometimes it'll run a movie in HD and sometimes it won't. It also pauses to recalibrate from time to time. Really annoying. Not worth giving up discs for that's for sure.

I agree, requiring Gold for Netflix is just silly. I mean, objectively, i understand the reasoning, but its still stupid because most people who watch netflix arent really online players, like me :P

Netflix is only $10 a month, too, for one-at-a-time. Or Blockbuster Online. And for that same $10 a month, you can watch a lot more than 5 movies, with a lot bigger selections. Also, does that $10 a month from redbox include hi-def movies? What about games?

The 10$ a month deal is by mail, even I don't like waiting several days when I'm in the mood for a movie. You can rent blurays for 2$ a day from redbox, yes.

So for hd movies, that takes your 5 movie a month example up to between $10-$20 a month, depending on if you get them turned back in in one day or two days. For $10, I get an unlimited number of one-at-a-time mailer rentals of any combination of DVDs, Blurays, ps2 games, ps3 games, 360 games, wii games, DS games from Blockbuster, plus I can trade those rentals in for something else at a Blockbuster store, if I don't want to wait for a movie (just as quick as driving to a redbox). For $20, I get the same, but up to three movie/games at a time. Even if you don't watch a lot of movies, i assume you play games (since this is a gaming site). And with a huge selection, unlike Redbox. And getting new releases a month before netflix or redbox. How would it not be better to get the same 5 movies for the same $10-20 bucks a month that you already would pay to Redbox, but also get all the game rentals you could want on top? Blockbuster Online > Netflix > Redbox.

You're right. It's not free. You still need to pay for the Netflix account. Just like you still need to pay for your internets to play games online for free with PSN. So, since it can't be called free, because you still have to pay for netflix, what does that make netflix on 360? You have to pay for it twice?

Yep, my XBL Gold account expires Dec. 15 that's when I'll officially move over to the PS3 for Netflix.

[QUOTE="ianuilliam"]Netflix is only $10 a month, too, for one-at-a-time. Or Blockbuster Online. And for that same $10 a month, you can watch a lot more than 5 movies, with a lot bigger selections. Also, does that $10 a month from redbox include hi-def movies? What about games?

ianuilliam

Look at it this way, an all you can eat buffet is only a good deal if you're going to eat a lot. For the 4-5 movies a month that I rent, 1 day each, Redbox gives me better quality than streaming, is faster than mail, and cheaper then netflix.

The only way netflix would be better is if I'm like the rotund guy at a buffet and actually use it all.

I saw this last week on the Playstation Blog. I haven't used Netflix on my 360 or PS3 for a while, but whenever I do resubscribe, I'll be streaming on my PS3. I noticed there's search feature on the PS3 app (it automatically finds movies as you type)! Is that available on the 360 app? I don't have XBL Gold either, so that's huge barrier lol.

why, is Netflix free on PS3 now?

HavocV3

Always has been... Free as in, you only have to pay for your Netflix account. As opposed to 360, you have to pay for Netflix, and be a Gold subscriber.

so it's not free.

seems like people try claiming it in the same way PS+ gets you 'free' stuff.

Exactly why I put "(w netflix subs.)" in the title. I knew someone would make an argument like yours. Of course you have to pay for the netflix subscription, its already understood that a netflix subscription is required. Xbox live requires 50 a year plus the 10 a month for Netflix, whereas PS3 is just the 10 a month. Sony isnt charging a dime for this feature, whereas Microsoft is. Sony is providing this feature for free, whereas Microsoft isnt...

who cares. As long as if Xbox owners can watch movies, etc. Its basically equivalent to PS3's version

no, because PS3 users can now get a better viewing experience without having to pay the yearly fee of xbox live

Pretty much this.

Who cares? It was better on 360 just a few months ago, and is it going to be just as big of a deal in 6 months when it's back to being better on 360(not saying it will be, don't freak out, but that tends to be how the cookie crumbles)? It's just how this stuff works out, Sony and Microsoft don't work like clockwork both receiving updates at the exact same moment in time, they will outpace each other constantly but at different times, comparing silly stuff like this is pointless.

PS3 plays Bluray movies, plays 3D games and movies, has the best motion control The Move, has free online, has far less hardware failure rates, comes with charge and play controllers, the HDD can be upgraded to 500gb for $80 with many brands of HDD, has the most and best exclusive games, and it has a web browser which is nice and useful. So why do people want a Wii or 360? Baffling!

jeez, i love how people of system wars likes to take things out of context, of course its not free but i don't have to pony up 50 bucks to use the feature which gold members have too. Also right now i'm doing the free trial for a month thing, so i really haven't payed for nothing yet and i gotta say its amazing. so like i said its freeee "for a month at least" for me

No is not free but it doesn't require a live kind of subscription which is the point,to enjoy netflix on 360 you need $50 for your gold account and your separate netflix account,on PS3 you just need your netflix account.
