Hmm looks like this is not a new engine afterall but just a "modified" Halo 3 engine, guess the 360 is maxed out afterall.

What is wrong with a modified Halo 3 engine? The game looks and plays great and is loved by many. I don't see what the real problem is here.

I wouldn't called the 360 maxed out, they could of made a new engine if they really wanted to but why would they spend money and resources on making a new engine that only runs on 360 if there most likely going multiplat after Halo Reach ...... one more thing .... Kenny, get your browser fixed or use another one. :P

No just no.. Go play Halo 3 today and it just looks downright bad compared to today's standards.. the game is still hella fun but in terms of graphics it hasnt aged well whatsoever.

OMG Bungie isn't makin teh grafix king!!! 360 is teh maxedd!!!

Seriously? Bungie is known for not making great graphics(they, of course, make great gameplay). Just because Bungie is using a highly modded Proprietary Halo Engine doesn't mean the 360 is maxed.

lol sorry. But yea, I wouldnt mind so much if 360 games really no longer pushed the envelope in terms of grpahics if they had a bigger exclusive game line up to make up for it.. MS needs more exclusives bad.. But im still holding out hope Reach will be good

Everything that was on there was already stuff we had heard from Game Informer. Right? I could be talking out of my rear side here. Anyway, as far as the graphics thing goes, I feel like it would be illogical for Bungie to reuse that same engine for the 3rd time. We'll see just how modified it is come beta time.

Halo Reach, will look great, regardless if It's a modded Halo 3 engine or a new engine from the ground up.

hence why Bungie is extremely overrated as devs.. they have had one monster hit of a game with the Halo franchise, they release Halo 3 which practically looks just as good as Halo 2 maybe a tiny bit better, Bungie doesnt seem to know how to develop a graphics engine to be on par with that of games like Gears Of War 2, U2 and even MW2, they stick with the original Xbox engine and just "heavily modify it" the 360 isnt hard to develop for, dont know why Bungie just doesnt take the time and make a new graphics engine.. I mean this is Halo we are talking about, they made hundreds of millions in profits on Halo 3 and yet dont put the money and effort into making a graphics engine that can hang with the best games today.

According to Bugie, they are modifying practically every aspect of the engine. Yes, they are using the Halo 3 engine as a starting platform, but the modifications aren't gonna be small.

Isn't Halo 3 engine just updated from Halo 2 and that updated from Halo: CE?

Like they have never changed engines?

Halo 3 had a great framerate, huge environments, great explosions and effects, TONS of tech going on at the same time, and it is all constantly being recorded, however this results in low texture quality among other things.

Pretty much. They've been using the Proprietary Halo Engine since Halo's development began as an RTS.

If people don't understand how graphics engines work they shouldn't post about them. Why would anyone believe that a modified engine won't look much better then previous versions? The Witcher used a modified Aurora engine used in NWN2, but looked much better. ME2 uses the same engine as ME1, but not only looks better, it has a better framerate as well. Without knowing how heavily the engine has been modified it's pointless to speculate how good the game will actually look until somebody gets some hands-on time with the game.

It's maxed out with Gears 2 since Halo Reach uses a modded Halo 3 engine? What if a 360 multiplat looks better than Gears 2, then what?

I wouldn't say they need exclusives badly, they just have to hold on to there third party exclusives and PC/360 games if they want to match Sony's first party exclusives. 3rd Party exclusives and 3rd Party support helps them a lot but they can easily turn heads if they see a possible profit off another system (PS3). Sony has very little to lose at this point, MS has everything to lose. Forza, Halo and Gears are never going to be on the PS3 but they can easily lose everything else like Splinter Cell which I predict WILL come to the PS3 ...... thats why I think it was pushed until April. They most likely have the PS3 version already in production and its release window is Q4. About Halo Reach ........ its going to be awesome. I can guarantee you that it will be an amazing game.

Absolutly, that and they have only had one monster hit franchise. Look Bungie has a game like Halo which is huge and possibly one of the biggest name games in video game history and they dont push themselves to make the graphics engine better.. If Bungie where good devs they would be looking to grow as devs and make the best graphics engine possible especially considering the butt load of money they made on the Halo franchise. That would be almost as equal to James Cameron releasing avatar and still using the same type of special effects found in Terminator 2..

Well, Halo is MS' biggest blockbuster...and Halo 3 used a modified Halo 2 engine...thus Halo:Reach uses a modified Halo 2 engine. I guess people just expect more. There's only so much you can do with a 6 year old engine. I think Reach looks nice, but I think with a new engine it they could do much more graphically.

u_u Yeah yeah...D: Halo about teh gameplay!!!11!!1 If that were true then everyone wouldn't have been defending Halo 3's graphics after every batch of new screens going on saying, "But there's time left! They'll improve!!!" nor would everyone have been all hyped for Reach's graphics saying "OMG ya'll! New engine! Reach gonna show you cows 360 aint tapped out!". Everyone likes eye candy, and the engine just seems dated.

Bungie's Halo games are rated among the highest ever. Halo 3 games sell terribly well and are played by millions every day two years after it's release. Calling them overrated devs based on graphics is quite a weak argument in comparison to that.

wow you don't think they've kept the code that allows it to run on x360? EVERYTHING has been changed, think COD4 to MW2 they use the quake 2 or 3 engine, both ancient.

Or maybe, just maybe engine development is not something Bungie really wanted to do, since it is really not their strength. ID or Epic would be much better suited for developing an engine.

Blizzard and Valve are two of the biggest (if not the biggest) devs ever.

None of them produce or try to produce graphics kings.

They are overrated devs.. they have one blockbuster franchise that happens to have a large following of fans that will play the game online until Christ's 2nd coming.. They have no other games in their portfolio whatsoever other than what? oni?, they are the true definition of one trick ponys.

Using those two terms is the quickest way for intelligent people to point who doesn't know squat about graphics.

It is a new engine, more or less. Halo 3 ran on a modified version of the Halo 2 engine. For Reach to still be running on that same engine seems farfetched. According to an interview with Edge, bungie said they completed 'gutted' the engine and left no area unchanged. They changed it enough to warrant giving it a new name, anyhow.

I think it's reasonable to say it's a new engine.

Basically I'm saying that if a game has solid gameplay, a solid universe and, in Halo's case, solid multiplayer, then it doesn't need to strive to be graphics king. As long as it keeps that solid gameplay, it won't need to even try to top Crysis.

If Bungie where good devs they would be looking to grow as devs and make the best graphics engine possible especially considering the butt load of money they made on the Halo franchise. That would be almost as equal to James Cameron releasing avatar and still using the same type of special effects found in Terminator 2..Kennysolidsnake

Bungie's Halo games are rated among the highest ever. Halo 3 games sell terribly well and are played by millions every day two years after it's release. Calling them overrated devs based on graphics is quite a weak argument in comparison to that.

They are overrated devs.. they have one blockbuster franchise that happens to have a large following of fans that will play the game online until Christ's 2nd coming.. They have no other games in their portfolio whatsoever other than what? oni?, they are the true definition of one trick ponys.

they created Myth, a AAA franchise on the PC

and Marathon a AAA franchise on the MACs

What is wrong with a modified Halo 3 engine? The game looks and plays great and is loved by many. I don't see what the real problem is here.

Kennysolidsnake
No just no.. Go play Halo 3 today and it just looks downright bad compared to today's standards.. the game is still hella fun but in terms of graphics it hasnt aged well whatsoever.

But this isn't Halo 3. They're saying it's heavily modified and what we've seen so far looks much better than Halo 3. Why should anyone care if it's a new engine or not? As long as it looks good it could be using the original Mario Bros. engine for all I care.

Doctor-McNinja

Pretty much this. It's the same has the Halo 3 engine in the same way Unreal 3 is the same as Unreal 2.

That is their problem and also the key to being able to fit so many effects in at the same time. Honestly if Reach can fix the visual hiccups of Halo 3 AND keep all its amazing effects that will be quite an accomplishment.

http://www.relyonhorror.com/content/new-haloreach-facts-gamepro "Halo: Reach's graphic engine is NOT new. It is a heavily modified Halo 3 engine" sorry my browser wont let me link.. Hmm looks like this is not a new engine afterall but just a "modified" Halo 3 engine, guess the 360 is maxed out afterall.

Kennysolidsnake
What does the Halo engine have to do with the 360 being maxed? Crysis 2 looks far better than any other 360 game and PS3 game and it's multiplatform. Besides, if it looks better and you wouldn't know the difference then who cares? Oh right ... Cows upset about 2010 :D

Words can't describe how shallow and fanboyish that sounds.

Are you kidding? so basically what your saying is devs no matter how much money the make on their games shouldnt strive on making the best game and best graphics engine possible? whats so fanboyish about that

Here is where I do agree with you. They have made a **** load of money of this franchise, so I think they should try and improve the graphics so long as gameplay doesn't take it hit. So far it looks like are improving the graphics though. But to what extent? No clue, we'll have to wait to find out.

That's funny because I think the complete opposite. In fact, I think ODST looks excellent and Bungie didn't modify the engine one bit for that game.
